The Luncheon of the Boating Party by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, is a very good piece of art. The artist well executed the use of shape and form. At first glance you can already tell what the artist was going for in the piece. A bunch of people under a gazebo, at a table with food, drinks and other objects, it has to be some sort of get together. By the texture of the painting you can tell the get together is outside, maybe even at a dock for boats like it says in the title. From the texture you can also tell what kind of clothes were accessible in the late 1800s. The artist did a good job using value to his advantage. From looking at the painting you can tell it wasn't nighttime, but sometime in the afternoon. The way Renoir used space was good,
Carol Armstrong begins her essay by pointing out the two main points that come about when discussing A Bar at the Folies-Bergere. These two points are the social context of the painting and its representation of 19th century Paris, and the internal structure of the painting itself with the use of space. She then goes on and addresses what she will be analyzing throughout her essay. The work that I have chosen to talk about was “The Old Stagecoach by Eastman Johnson.” This work would be considered a painting. The images that are shown in the painting are a old stagecoach as the name of the painting suggest. The stagecoach does not have any wheel and so it just sits on the ground. There are also a bunch of children that are portrayed playing inside and on top of the stagecoach. The colors that are used in this painting are all realistic, this is very important because it portrays what a warm summer day would like on a farm. There are a lot of different colors such as bright green grass and bright colors for the clothes that the children are wearing. There a quite a few principles are elements that are used in the painting. One of the first principles that I noticed was the emphasis of the stagecoach. It appears in the center of the image and is definitely the main focus of the image. The children in the image are definitely important to the painting to show how much the they enjoy the stagecoach. There is also a good use of variety in the colors used for what each child is wearing which also brings interest to the painting.
Both authors explore the progressive attitudes and how these were received during the time period of both Fitzgerald and Robert. Frost presents this idea in the poem, ‘Mending Wall’. Roughly one hour into Jane Campion’s critically acclaimed 1993 film The Piano, perhaps the most visually surprising image is presented during George Baines’ (Harvey Keitel) direct attempt to seduce Ada McGrath (Holly Hunter) while she teaches him how to play. Her husband, Alisdair Stewart (Sam Neill), has ordered Ada to teach the piano to Baines,’ as they must keep the instrument in his home due to Alisdair having no room. Returning to Baines’ house, Ada begins playing normally, but she eventually stops when Baines reveals himself, completely naked. He suggests that she lie with him, asking her ‘how many keys’ it would require. After careful deliberation, she agrees at the cost of 10 keys. Arguably the most important scene in The Piano from a narrative standpoint, the stark color contrast between the warm, sensual interior shots and the cold, passionless exterior shots visually express the desires of Ada in regards to Baines and Stewart respectively. Additionally, the use of character and camera proxemics during Ada and Baines’ interaction magnifies the tension throughout the scene.
We walked and walked looking at each art piece, which were all well displayed. Then as I looked at the back wall, a large oil canvas painting looked right back at me. The first painting analyzed was North Country Idyll by Arthur Bowen Davis. The focal point was the white naked woman. The white was used to bring her out and focus on the four actual colored males surrounding her. The woman appears to be blowing a kiss. There is use of stumato along with atmospheric perspective. There is excellent use of color for the setting. It is almost a life like painting. This painting has smooth brush strokes. The sailing ship is the focal point because of the bright blue with extravagant large sails. The painting is a dry textured flat paint. The painting is evenly balanced. When I look at this painting, it reminds me of settlers coming to a new world that is be founded by its beauty. It seems as if they swam from the ship.

The painting The Boating Party by Mary Cassatt depicts a man rowing a woman and her child along the ocean. The man rowing the boat is sitting facing a beautiful green landscape; however we can only see his back and half of his face. The woman who is seated on the opposite side appears to be enjoying the ride as she is holding her child. This painting dates back to 1893 though 1894; its dimensions are 35 inches by 46 inches. In contrast the painting Happy Accidents of the swing is by Jean-Honore Fragonard, and this painting portrays a young woman seated on a swing that is located in an overgrown garden while being pushed by a man that seems to be hiding in the shadows. We can also see a young man in the lower left reclining in the bushes, one arm outstretched towards the young woman skirts, his other arm holding his balance as he admires her. Monet uses a combination of thick bold brushstrokes and small short soft brushstrokes; this creates a nice varied look and helps give a good impression of perspective.
