Faith is the key to surmounting physical and spiritual obstacles. Believers ken and understand the potency of faith in their lives when times become arduous. There is no obstacle that cannot be overcome by the power of faith in God. The book Picking Cotton, the Bible, the movie Conviction, and many gospel songs are inspired by individuals who overcame obstacles of faith. These individuals include Ronald Cotton, Peter, Phillip, Betty Waters, Kenny, Kurt Carr, Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, and Kirk Franklin.
In Addition, to the book Picking Cotton, the main character, Ronald Cotton overcomes obstacles of his faith when he is wrongfully convicted of raping two white women. Ronald Cotton keeps his cool thinking it is all just one big misunderstanding. With all the evidence on Ronald Cotton he is wrongfully charged with rape. “Lock him up,” Detective Sully is saying, pointing at Ronald Cotton like he is trash that needs to be put out (85).After Ronald Cotton is arrested he puts his faith in his lawyer that he will get him out of the situation. While in prison for rape, Ronald is tried by inmates in prison but does not let them push his buttons. As Cotton is walking into Central Prison, inmates scream, “Fresh meat,” and “Hey, pretty boy, I got something for you” (96) Ronald Cotton starts working in the kitchen. An inmate calls him skinny thing; Cotton does not give in or fight back, all he is thinking about is his reputation (98-102). All Ronald Cotton is worried about is getting out of prison and being around his family .When Ronald Cotton learns that Bobby Poole confessed to the rape of Jennifer Thompson to another inmate (110), He decides to murder Poole. ...ing to your faith. How much you trust God determines how much God mystically enchants you. This lyrics influences listeners encouraging them not to give up and to know that they can make it through faith no matter what.
The book Picking Cotton, the Bible, the film Conviction, and many gospel songs are given great ideas from people who overcame obstacles of faith. Obstacles can be anything that stands in our way of reaching our goals, having prosperity, or being what God want us to be. Great faith endures great tribulations, each day comes with it is quota of struggles and difficulties and every minute victory becomes seed to grow our faith. Whether we are physically contacted by sickness, death, divorce, or unemployment we require grace to endure. But during endeavoring times we learn who we authentically are and more importantly, we learn about God‘s faithfulness.
Jennifer Thompson-Cannino was raped at knife point in her apartment. She was able to escape and identify Ronald Cotton as her attacker. The detective conducting the lineup told Jennifer that she had done great, confirming to her that she had chosen the right suspect. Eleven years later, DNA evidence proved that the man Jennifer Identified, Ronald Cotton was innocent and wrongfully convicted. Instead, Bobby Poole was the real perpetrator. Sadly, there are many other cases of erroneous convictions. Picking cotton is a must read for anybody because it educates readers about shortcomings of eyewitness identification, the police investigative process and the court system.
Adversities are often given a negative connotation and view, as most consider them to be hurdles which impede progress. Nevertheless when taken in and accepted under a positive light, adversities can serve as stepping stones through which an individual can better their character. In the face of looming obstacles individuals who persevere come out of the situation as stronger, determined, and more hopeful for the future.
Thompson, Jennifer. Cotton, Ronald. “Picking Cotton.” Ferris State University. Williams Auditorium, Big Rapids, MI. 15 April 2014. Guest Lecture.
In the first stanza we are captivated by hope, because it “dangles on a string” before us, not quite in our grasp, because even though we are aware of it, we do not fully have a handle on what it means to be hopeful (1). This is then said to be like “slow-spinning redemption” (2). Again, this is because we do not fully appreciate redemption. We can see it before us, in many different lights, hence spinning, but we do not really understand what makes redemption what it is. Because we do not comprehend the concepts of hope and redemption they “rope us in” and “mesmerize” us (5, 6). We spend a lot of time in our youth...
“I’d like to become a legal guardian,” said Leigh Anne Touhy as she confirmed confidently, but had no idea what she was getting herself and her family into. Based on a true story, the movie The Blind Side portrays a beautiful example of finding meaning in life. The story illustrates a homeless boy who was abandoned by his family but who is eventually adopted by another family who supported him all the way to being drafted in the first round of the NFL (National Football League) draft. Leigh Anne, the adoptive mother exemplifies faith in many ways. In its most general terms faith means trust. (Bishop) But in her case, she uses her faith in God to trust that He is working through her to show the world His unconditional love. But faith is not just limited to religious views; faith is finding meaning in life and can largely affect how one lives. Living without faith in something causes a much
When we face suffering, we have a choice: to look to God and have trust in him, or to turn away and forget him. It is crucial to do the first thing; to have faith. So let me tell you about the story of a particular individual who is an amazing role model of this virtue.
As followers in our lives those barriers can be sin, laziness, or lack of fulfilling the call that we all have on our life. We are all called to reach the unreached. When we trust God we truly see all the amazing things that he can do within us. The biggest challenge to myself reading this book is to look at my own life, and see where I’m lacking. What I meant by that is saying that when we get tired, and we start to feel like we have nothing left to give we have to look at ourselves, and keep going. The people who have had the biggest impact on this earth including Jesus are the ones that when they had nothing left to give, and they were tired they found the strength within them to keep on going. People want to be audacious in there faith, but they don’t want to put in the
In spite of determination is the key to success, others would contradict and question why. In the story, “Against The Odds” Sully had determination, to save the people on the plane. Determination matters for everyone because it motivates others to reach their goal. For instance in, “The Grapes Of Wrath” the farmers had the determination to move through the disasters such as blackouts, thick air, and dust storms. The determination is essential for those who are successful like Sully, Bethany Hamilton, Billy Coleman, Albert Einstein, and J.K Rowling. To begin being successful is important for all people that want to aim to their goal.
In life we all face obstacles. The troubles that we face don’t define us, how we overcome the situation is what makes us the people we are today. Throughout my life I have faced many trials and tribulations that I had to overcome with the help of my mother, ofcourse. I was smooth sailing in life until I started high school.
For example, if one of your goals is to earn a college degree, but you do not believe you can afford it becomes a challenge. If you have a negative viewpoint, then you may believe it is impossible to overcome this challenge and reach your goal. However, if you have a mentality of courage, then you will realize that you can overcome this trial. If you
With every difficult or discouraging event in my life I have two choices. I can either become discouraged and blame myself or I choose to rise up and realize that every difficulty faced is only temporary. God is the creator of it all and nothing happens to us that surprises Him. With this understanding, I have to accept that God would not allow me to face a difficulty that He could not get me through.
Obstacles exist to make people stronger. Eight years ago, a permanent transformation took place in my life when my parents decided to go through a lengthy process of divorce. My world came crashing down; what was once a picture-perfect family quickly evolved to a perpetual controversy. After all the papers were signed and the deals were made, they split. I was an emotional wreck. I broke down, submerged in tears, I latched onto my mom’s leg refusing to let go.
As being a child of God I realize that circumstances and difficult situations will sometimes occur. Nevertheless, my beliefs and understanding of God’s word and as continuously keeps me focus on walking by faith and not by sight. During my early experiences of learning about God’s word, I have come to realize that God allows us to go through trying times to help remind us of who he really is. Obstacles and unforeseen situations led me to sharing my trails I order to help others that may encounter similar experiences. Knowing that the bible is a 100% truth, I can spread his word with
It may take many people to realize that the decisions they make today could possibly affect the outcome tomorrow and even later in life. When we are children, our parents and guardians are responsible for properly guiding us to make the right choices, they are the people who are supposed to teach us right from wrong and in most cases they are the people who reveals the many harsh realities of the world to us. Through childhood we may not worry about how the bills will get paid, or what job we will have when we are adults because for many people the answer to those questions often change with time. As we grow older it is up to us to follow their guidance and learn from what they have taught us and live in a society as one. Life is full of choices, some larger than others but during all stages of life we are given the opportunity to shape our own futures, make a difference in our community, and try to achieve our life goals. The decisions we make today could have an adverse affect on what we do tomorrow. In life, we are all faced with decisions regarding numerous life choices on a day to day basis. In Alonzo Mourning’s book “Resilience,” based on his experiences Mourning gives his audience suggestions to follow in his path to succeed in life to achieve our goals. We learn as adults that some of the choices we made in the past were not to our benefit, but we may not know the decision was wrong at the time. In many points in the book Mourning talks about the importance of having faith in God and praying about situations, because he feels his belief and faith in God is what gets him through many difficult times. When Mourning spoke with a young boy and his father regarding their common illness he advised the father, “Pray for it and ev...
