Brief History of Skateboarding.
In the beginning, skateboarding consisted of a 2x4 and some old roller-skate wheels. Around the 1950's with the boom in the surfing popularity, skateboarding became more popular. During this time it was known as sidewalk surfing. In the 1960's is when skateboarding really took off. This is when the first skateboards were produced and sold. During this time period skateboarding consisted of cruising around the streets on your board. In 1978 a 15 year old boy by the name of Alan "Ollie" Gelfand invented a trick he called the no-hands air. His friends named after him the ollie. This was a ramp based trick. In the coming years a rider by the name of Rodney Mullen took the trick and applied it to flatland skateboarding. After this point skateboarding began to evolve in to the sport it is today. Virtually every trick in the modern day skateboarding involves the ollie.
When a skateboarder rolls down the street they have forces acting in the X and Y direction. The forces that I will focus on are only in the Y direction. As a skater rides down the street there are three forces acting on the skateboard. The red arrows in the image indicate the force of gravity on the mass of the skater(Mg). The black arrow represents the force of gravity on the skateboard(mg). The blue arrows are the FN or natural force of the ground pushing up on the wheels of the board. These forces have a net force of zero.
Sum of forces in Y: Mg + mg - FN = 0
As the skater prepares to ollie they lower the center of gravity by bending at the knees and waist. Next the skater will begin to explode in the positive Y direction by pressing down on the tail of the board. The red arrows now have an uneven distribution to the tail of the board causing lift on the nose. All of the FN is now pushing up on the rear wheels.
At this point the skater is has applied a large downward force on the tail causing the board to pop or bounce off of the ground. The downward force applied is greater than the force of gravity allowing the board to begin leaving the ground.
The three principle forces are the summing of joint forces, continuity of joints, and the linear motion (McCaw, n.d). In the summing of joint is when the thoracic, the shoulder, the elbow, the knee, the ankle, the atlas and skull, and the phalange joints gain the momentum. When joints are in fast action it produces more muscle force and all joint are moving to help produces the muscle force (McCaw, n.d). The second principle is continuity of joint forces. This is when the hip is going into flexion first. Then after the hip the knee goes into flexion, then followed by the ankle. This movement should be smooth and fluid (McCaw, n.d). The last principle for the force producing phase is linear motion. In this phase the start of pirouette should be gaining momentum (Hall, 2011). The direction the pirouette is going in is clockwise because the body is rotating counter clockwise. As a dancer is performing a pirouette an outside force is acting on the body. This force is what causes the body to be able to turn. When the dancer starts the body is at rest and not moving until they initiate the turn with their arms and

After being mesmerized by figure skating at the age of eight, I became a member of the Markham Skating Club. As a competitive figure skater, I must perform various jumps and spins in a choreographed program. I have participated in numerous competitions in Central Ontario and have received multiple medals for my achievements. Yet, my achievement as a figure skater stem from the adversity that I faced throughout my skating journey. This sport has imposed challenges to both my mental and physical strength that have ultimately constructed the qualities of dedication and humility within myself.
In snowboard as in any other sport the athlete has to be thinking at all times, analyzing the situation that surrounds you, make split decisions, and even perform quick calculations in your head.
During the 1950’s when skateboarding first got it’s legs it was a very popular activity to take part in during vacations to ocean side tourist attractions, or as an activity after surfing. Yet, by 1965, skateboarding had diminished in popularity completely, therefore almost every skateboard manufacturer went out of business. . During this time the only people who even wanted to skateboard were surfers who needed something to ride to practice their surfing while the waves were flat. Due to the fact that there were no skateboards being made or sold, those who wanted to skate had to take it upon them-selves to manufacture their own boards. Using any kind of scrap they could find to build a usable board out of, such as metal scrap pieces or old planks. These determined surfers had to unscrew the trucks and wheels off of roller skates and attach them to the bottom of their boards. And because these kids were from very poor families for the most part, and next to non had jobs of their own, they had to resort to taking the trucks and wheels off the roller skates secretly in the stores. Snowboarding started as one single brand, Burton. Jake Burton, literally the inventor of snowboarding, was the first to set the bar for what he thought the sport was. He was born in New York, NY on April 29, 1954. He began making boards with wood working machines he had’nt a clue how to use, selling the boards out of his car. Because of his entrepreneurship, Jake Burton sacrifices his career as a stockbroker to pursuit a dream, resulting in the worlds first major snowboarding brand now worth hundreds of millions of dollars (Gale, 2007). In Americas history, the sacrifices made by entrepreneurs has led to some of the largest businesses in the world.

One snowy Christmas day in Muskegon, Michigan, a young girl by the name of Wendy Poppen tried to stand up on her sled while sliding down the hill. Seeing this, her father Sherman ran into the garage and bolted a pair of skies together with wood to ""act as foot stops"" (Crane). While watching Wendy use the contraption, some of the local kids ran up to Sherman and asked him to build one for each of them. Little did he know that he had given birth to the “fastest growing winter sport” (Prosl) known as snowboarding. The history, simplicity, and rate of growth of snowboarding took the sport from being completely banned from ski resorts, to being accepted worldwide with its Olympic debut in 1998.
This is achieved when the diver takes the first leap into the air with his arms raised. When he comes back down on the board, his own mass falling onto the board will apply a certain force. An additional force is added as the arms swing down at the same time with a greater acceleration, applying more force. At the bottom of the diving board's oscillation, all of the now stored potential energy is released. The diver swings his arms upward and begins to release his pressure on the board. The board pushes the diver up and into the air with a huge force.
One way I succeeded was by practicing. Everyday I would go to the hill in my neighborhood and practice. I would practice stopping, keeping my balance, and locking my ankles in place so my board wouldn’t shake. I would spend all evening after school riding down that hill and if it was the weekend, I would be outside all day! I brought my skateboard with me everywhere and I would practice on any hill I saw until my legs and feet hurt, I was determined to ride down that hill.
Dance does not just consist of turning and jumping; balance is also a key aspect in every style of dance. For balance, in physics terms, the net force and net torque is zero otherwise the dancer’s momentum would change and they might fall or tip over. Figure skating helps older adults to strengthen their lower leg muscles which includes hip adductors and abductors, calves and ankles. Figure skating helps older adults to improve their balance and helps maintain proper alignment of the upper body (McKay, 2014). “Many older adults are donning skates, spandex and sequins and going after golds of their own” (McKay, 2014). Older adults are very careful with their jumps and spins in figure skating and which are easy for them to do at their age compared to young adults. Older adults can fracture their bones or disturb their muscles easily when they jump or spin while skating. Figure skating is a great sport, it helps older adults to clear their mind and it is a good way to get exercise while they are enjoying their skating with a partner (McKay, 2014). Figure skating gives opportunities to older adults to meet with new partners, and they sometimes get involved in a relationship especially who are single, divorced or widowed. Figure skating is not easy for older adults as they can injure themselves if they fell on ice, so the older adults who like figure skating or participate in figure skating sport they spend their money to get training for figure skating. There are many older adults who are passionate about figure skating and they skate like young adults. When people get older they enjoy figure skating because it brings a good memory to them from their young adulthood. "It's nice to skate as an adult because you make the decisions," says Ms. Panzer. "It's your money, your time, it's not your parent telling you what to do" (McKay,
Kites have existed for many years but multi-line kites were not even invented until around 1826. People use these multi-line kites for pulling just about anything from kite boards, surfboards, skateboards, roller skates, and skis. The biggest setback for kiteboarding was whenever the riders kite hit the water it would not relaunch because of the material used to make the kites would soak up the water and become too dense to fly through the air. Then Bruno and Dominique Legaignoux came up with the idea of an inflatable kite that would relaunch even when it was soaked in 1982. This helped to increase the popularity of the sport of kiteboarding which did not really emerge until the late 1990’s. Kiteboarding has many names and nicknames but the most common names are kiteboarding, kitesurfing, and fly kiting. The sport did not start to become popular until the 21st century.
