Physics is the science that allows us to understand the fundamental behaviors of the universe. It can be
explored at the macroscopic and microscopic levels, giving insight into the way objects interact.
Here we will take a look at how physics can be applied to the game of pool. Almost all of the different
aspects of pool can be explained through physics, and a better understanding of these fundemental
principles can aid in performance playing pool.
In the game of pool there are sixteen balls, one cueball and fifteen physically identical numbered balls.
While there are many interactions between all the balls on the table, in order to simplify things we will
only look at the interactions between the cue ball and the first ball it strikes. These principles can be
expanded to evaluate the entire system of balls on the pool table.
In order to evaluate the physics of pool, first the measurable values of the system must be collected.
Parameter Symbol Value
Cue ball mass m1 1.6x10-1 kg
Cue ball radius r1 2.79x10-2m
Ball mass m2-m16 1.7x10-1 kg
Ball radii r2-r16 2.86x10-2 m
Coefficient of friction µk 0.027
Knowing these values the Motion, Work, and Energy can all be derived.
The motion of the balls can be catagorized into two general catagories which are collisions and spin or
rotation. Here the focus will be on collisions between the balls. The spin can have a
significant effect on the motion of the ball, but due to time constraints and complexity of the science of
it it will not be addressed to much detail.
"An elastic collision between two objects is one in which the total kinetic energy (as well as total momentum) of the system is the same before and after the collision." (Physics for Scientists and Engineers)
In a collision between the cue ball and another ball, since the masses are so similar the resulting angle
between the vectors of the balls is approximately ninety degrees.
If you throw a ball with a lot of spin the ball will create air resistance (drag) then the ball will curve or slide as the ball reaches the plate and causes the batter to swing. This is because the faster moving air below the ball creates a smaller amount of pressure, which forces the ball to dive or break.
Billiards, or more commonly referred to as pool has been played for many decades. In the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century it was played by those of upper class standing in their homes. Over the twentieth century pool shifted roles, becoming part of middle and lower class society. With the class change, pool also moved out of the home and into bars and halls. Pool has been forever transformed; today there are three main groups of pool players to be found in pool halls; professional players: blue collar players, and teenage players.
...g that the balls will travel a considerable distance farther than just a regular aluminum bat. I will set everything up on the football field and hit twenty five baseballs with each bat so I can get a significant amount of data out of each bat. I will set up my swinging machine in an endzone just incase my balls fly that far. After hitting each ball I will measure each hit one by one and in the end add them up from each bat. I will then average them and see which one had the better trampoline effect. I will also calculate the momentum of the two bats, I am hoping the corked bat will have the better momentum, but we will see in the end.
An elastic collision between two objects is one in which total kinetic energy (as well as total momentum) is the same before and after the collision.
All the math work, along with physics principles, aided in proving that math has a significant role in the game of softball. Although people know that math is included in softball, the degree of its inclusion is still a mystery to both the audience and players. As seen in the mathematics work and graphs above, an average throw of a regulation fast pitch softball is parabolic in shape. This parabola has a curvature known as the trajectory, or the bath of the flying ball. This trajectory and parabola increases as the distance of the throw increases, therefore, the maximum height of the throw increases. This proves that an average softball throw has many mathematical aspects that shape the way the sport is played.
Baseball is a fascinating sport that is exceptionally fun to play. This assignment is all about understanding the physics of a few key aspects of this sport. One might ask what physics could have to do with baseball? Like most sports baseball involves physical motion. Baseball encompasses all three planes of motion through throwing, hitting, and fielding. All of the classical laws of mechanics can be applied to understand the physics of this game.
ball. This is humorous as it is a petty topic to argue over. There is
Baseball is a unique sport in many different ways. It is the only major competitive sport that has no time limit. The success of a player is determined on how well he can play as an individual and how well the team plays along with him. There are many rules that determine the success of a player’s performance. A baseball game is played with two teams and each team is permitted 25 players per team; however this is only true for professional teams. There are three parts to baseball: offense, pitching, and defense.
Its America’s pastime. Since 1869, the MLB has been the sweetheart of American sports. A requisite to be a true American is to have a conceptual understanding of baseball; the seventh inning stretch, “Take Me Out To The Ball Game,” as well as hotdogs and warm summer nights at the ball park are all favorite memories of American pastime. However, what one might not realize is the extreme physics behind the game. The velocity of the pitch, and degree of the ball exiting the bat, the exit speed, and how an outfielder throws are entailed within the physics of baseball. It is important to understand the physics involved with baseball to grow in understanding and appreciation of the sport.
Whether it is the angle needed to swing the bat, the force needed to kick the ball, or the speed needed to run, physics is present in every aspect of every sport. Players become aware at a young age that physics will be a part of their lives for as long as they play a sport, even if they are not aware of it. From the moment a child starts a sport, the many different methods used to improve revolve around physics. Softball is a prime example of this. Physics plays a role in softball because every aspect of this sport requires a certain momentum and force. Players must aim to achieve the skill to be able to use the physics behind the sport to their advantage. Through the use of hitting, catching, and throwing a softball, there is the need to
Lift or curve in the motion of an object through air is a phenomena that is noticeable in a ball traveling through fluid/air. This change in direction is due to the effect that spin has on the object in motion. This can be explained by Bernoulli's Principle. Bernoulli, a 1700's physicist and mathematician, showed that the speed of an object through liquid/air changes the pressure of the air. The velocity of a spinning ball relative to the air is different from one side to the other creating a low pressure on one side and a high pressure on the other. This causes the ball to move in the direction of the lower pressure. The golf ball is typically hit with an undercut causing a reverse rotation and therefore a lifting action on the ball.
high. Also, if a runner is hit exactly at his center of mass, he will
2.) Inelastic collision: A strobe photo will be used that shows a glider smashing into another glider which is initially at rest. When they collide the two gliders will stick together and will move.
Physics can be used to explain a lot of things. In this paper I described some basic concepts in physics that are relevant to basketball, particularly the three main parts of basketball, shooting, dribbling and passing. So the next time you are out shooting some hoops just think of all the physics that are being applied and you could be one step away from being a physicist, and have fun.
