1. a) radiation~ The spontaneous decay or disintegration of an unstable atomic nucleus accompanied by the emission of radiation.
b) nuclear energy~ Energy released when atomic nuclei undergo a nuclear reaction such as the spontaneous emission of radioactivity, nuclear fission, or nuclear fusion.
c) background radiation~ relatively constant low-level radiation from environmental sources such as building materials, cosmic rays, and ingested radionucleides in the body.
d) nuclear fission~ Atomic nuclear processes which involve the splitting of nuclei with the accompanying release of energy.
e) nuclear fusion~ The nuclear process whereby several small nuclei are combined to make a larger one whose mass is slightly smaller than the sum of the small ones.
2. Two types of nuclear reactions can produce nuclear energy. Nuclear fusion is a process in which two light nuclei combine to form a single heavier nucleus. Nuclear fission is a process in which a heavy nucleus splits into two smaller nuclei.
3. Alpha, Beta, and Gamma radiation is produced when an unstable nucleus decays.
Alpha particles are made of 2 protons and 2 neutrons.
This means that they have a charge of +2, and a mass of 4
Alpha particles are relatively slow and heavy.
They have a low penetrating power - you can stop them with just a sheet of paper.
Because they have a large charge, alpha particles ionise other atoms strongly.
Beta particles have a charge of minus 1, and a mass of about 1/2000th of a proton. This means that beta particles are the same as an electron.
They are fast, and light.
Beta particles have a medium penetrating power - they are stopped by a sheet of aluminium or plastics such as perspex.
Beta particles ionise atoms that they pass, but not as strongly as Alpha particles do.
Gamma rays are waves, not particles. This means that they have no mass and no charge.
Gamma rays have a high penetrating power - it takes a thick sheet of metal such as lead, or concrete to reduce them significantly.
Gamma rays do not directly ionise other atoms, although they may cause atoms to emit other particles which will then cause ionisation.
4. Advantages of using nuclear energy instead of energy produced by fossil fuels:
The Earth has limited supplies of coal and oil. Nuclear power plants could still produce electricity after coal and oil become scarce.
Nuclear power plants need less fuel than ones which burn fossil fuels. One ton of uranium produces more energy than is produced by several million tons of coal or several million barrels of oil.
When the released neutrons attach to other isotopes of Uranium 235, this can result in a chain reaction of fission. For every generation of fission, the amount of fission is doubled, and this results in an extreme outburst of energy. The amount of energy released by this process is related to Einstein’s famous equation “E=mc2” (Wolf). Einstein's equation "E=mc2" has two sides, which are constructive and destructive. The constructive side is when energy is converted into mass, and the destructive side is when a small amount of mass is converted into energy.
Nuclear energy must be a consideration for the future with the rapidly depleting supply of fossil fuels. This type of energy can be created through nuclear fission and nuclear fusion. Nuclear fission is the splitting of a heavy atom into two or more parts, releasing huge amounts of energy. The release of energy can be controlled and captured for generating electricity. Nuclear fusion involves bombarding hydrogen atoms together to form helium. In the long run, nuclear fusion has greater potential than fission.
It originated with a blend of British Isles dances such as the jig, reel and clog dancing as well as African steps such as juba and ringshout dances. However, as tap progressed, the African elements became more formal, and the British elements became more formal. This is what created the American hybrid form of tap dance that is still very popular today. It combines different rhythms and syncopations that require intricate isolations through the feet. Because of the combined roots, there is a lot of variety within the genre itself. In the movie “Tap” (2002), you can see how dance was used a social form of communication. They would tap in clubs, in bars, pretty much anywhere. You can see in this movie, that this form of tap was very much a social dance form. However, the Nicholas Brothers had a different approach to tap. They had a much more stylized approach to the technique. This related to many different audiences because it was more performance based and less casual. People were entertained when watching people like them perform. Stemming off of tap is Irish dance. Irish dance is different than tap in the fact that it is done in a much more uniform style and is mainly held upright. While tap is very grounded and more loose. Michael Flately is known for his fame in Riverdance and is one of the most popular Irish dancers of the time. What is unique about his work is that it combines elements
Social orders have existed for many years and have been passed down from one generation to another. In history class we have discovered that “social order” was a product of “civilized” societies. Social order was the structure of a civilized society created by human and it determines where one is placed and their duty. The way social order was justified was through philosophical and religious beliefs and morals. The wealthy and the people who reinforce these justifications are the ones who benefit from a social order. I’ll be supporting my paper on social order through information from Vedic India and China.
The therapist will choose the relational emotive behavior theory in this case study because it focuses on changing a set irrational belief to a rational one. And the behavior therapy tends to change actions, instead of beliefs, through stimuli diversion. And in this case, the therapist needs to change Ana?s belief that her life is hopeless because 1) she is hopeless, and 2) her support system
The third type of radiation is gamma radiation. Gamma radiation and X-rays are part of the electromagnetic radiation like visible light, radio waves, and ultraviolet light. These electromagnetic radiations differ by the amount of energy's they have. Gamma radiation can penerate through most materials including skin, it can travel very deep in human tissues as well. Gamma radiation has abosolutly no mass and is able to travle in the speed of light. It is very fast and very strong. When radioactive materials release gamma radiation it can be both externally and internally hazards for humans.
always alive” Pure love of this extraordinary story has kept the words alive for nearly two hundred years, so they can dance for you across these colorful pages” (Walden 5). There are many ballet schools that use the Nutcracker Ballet as a way to make money. Maybe it is because they have a family member dancing in it or it is a fundraising event. And of course we have a different outlook on the ballet The Nutcracker when little ones are performing .They see the cute costumes and beautiful scenes
Tap dance is a style of dance the incorporates complex foot work with rhythmic patterns. Performers wear metal-soled dance shoes that are fit to their feet and that allow them to create clicking patterns as they dance. Tap dance is an ever-changing style of dance that is practiced by people young and old all around the world. This entertaining style of dance originated in Africa and was brought to America by slaves. With African, Scottish, Irish, and British origins, tap has also become one of the greatest forms of dance entertainment in the Americas. Despite his personal shortcomings and the racial barriers of the time, Bill ‘Bojangles’ Robinson created a unique form of tap dance that is still relevant in the current world of dance. The footprint
circle the nucleus in various orbits particular to each type of atom. Generally speaking, the further the electron’s orbit is away from the nucleus, the higher the energy level of that electron. In reality atoms move, vibrate, and rotate, but for our understanding we will just look at the excitation levels of the electrons and their orbits. An atom is said to be at ground state when its electrons posses only their innate electrical energy. When electrons are bombarded with radiation they absorb some of the energy and move further away from the nucleus to an excited level. The atom naturally wants to return to ground state and in doing so releases the absorbed energy in the form of a photon. A photon is a light particle, perceived to act physically as both a particle (matter) and ...
A type of Cognitive-Behavioral therapy created by Albert Ellis called Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy points out that irrational patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving are the cause of much human disturbance, including depression and anxiety. Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy teaches that turning flexible preferences into ambitious or grandiose demands and commands will cause disturbances. This Therapy holds that an irrational belief system has strong tendencies to lead to self-defeating components such as; demands, awfulizing, low frustration tolerance, people rating, and
The Industrial Revolution sparked a need for large sources of energy. Human and animal labor could not provide the power necessary to power industrial machinery, railroads, and ships. The steam engine and later the internal combustion engine provided the bulk of the energy required by the industrial age. Today most nations are still heavily reliant on energy that comes from combustion. Usually coal, petrolium, and natural gas are used. Some hydroelectric, wind power, and nuclear fission sources are used, but in the US they accounted for less than 20% of the total energy consumption in 1997 (1). Many experts are worried that natural resources such as coal and petrolium are being depleted faster than they are being replenished, which could result in an energy crisis. Nuclear fission produces highly radioactive waste that is expensive to dispose of properly. Nuclear fusion reactors would produce much less radioactive waste and would be more efficient than nuclear fission, but to date there have been no nuclear fusion reactors that have generated usable energy output. Why is fusion power, which could be very beneficial, so hard to come by?
The purpose of the present work is to investigate the interactions of the gamma radiation with the new alloys by measuring mass attenuation coefficients for different gamma energies ranged from 235 to 2614 keV by using different point radioactive sources 133Ba, 137Cs , 60Co and 232Th, and comparing these results with the corresponding theoretical calculations.
Nuclear energy is generated by a process called fission. Fission occurs within the reactor of a nuclear power plant when a neutron is fired at an atom of uranium causing it to split and release subsequent neutrons.1 These are able to crash into other uranium atoms causing a chain reaction and releasing a great deal of heat energy.
It was times where we used to party and hang out almost everyday. Due to certain circumstances, I couldn't hang out and party like I used too. We grew apart for a while and I really can't explain why, It just happened I guess. He was dealing with a young lady that I felt was ruining his life. Even though I didn't agree with his current living situation at the time, when things got hot and heavy , I was always there to be his escape route. It was times when him and his current girlfriend at that time, would fight and I was the first person on the scene to diffuse the situation or just take him away from the situation. I got really sick of going out of my way to save this guy from another problem. It got to the point when I just stopped showing up when he needed me to. We stop hanging out all together, and our friendship sort of drifted away. Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months, and months turned into more
Even though dance first originated back in the 20th century when dancer Isadora Duncan broke away from the strict rules of ballet to create her own more natural form of dance. Through time and experimentation, many genres of dance has surfaced - whether from oppression or for theatrical purposes, each one has captured the eyes of it 's audience. From flashy, sequined clothes to light and flowy dresses; each form of dance has it 's own representation. As well as representation, each genre of dance has powerful emotion in it. These popular forms of dance can be classified into three categories: the pounding and rhythmic beats of Hip-hop, the powerful meanings of modern dance, and the wonderful elegance of ballet, the most thought-out.Everyone has watched in amazement as their high school dance
