Leadership Essay The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) adopted a vision statement for the Physical Therapy Profession in 2013. The vision of “Transforming society by optimizing movement to improve the human experience” was supported by guiding principles and a strategic plan to aid physical therapists and APTA in achieving this goal. For physical therapists, leadership skills are necessary to promote the profession and contribute to the attainment of this vision. Leadership is both an art and a science that achieves a purpose through envisioning long term goals, promoting change-centered problem resolutions, incorporating strategic plans, and motivating fellow collaborators. Aspects of leadership that a physical therapist needs to promote the APTA vision statement are intelligence, communication skills, and marketing. Exceptional understanding of the movement system is pertinent in identifying impairments, recognizing activity restrictions, providing therapeutic interventions, and appreciating the potential for the human …show more content…

Therapeutic communication can help promote a relationship between the nurse and the client, by focusing on the client’s needs. The nurse can do this by using various types of communication skills, such as giving recognition, giving information, and offering self. Giving recognition is acknowledging the client’s needs in a non-judgmental way.An example of giving recognition in Bed Number Ten is “After you’re a little better, we’ll be taking you to the physical therapy department for regular work to rebuild your strength” (54). Sue enjoyed the conversation with Charles because he was the first to spoke to her about getting better. Giving information is providing specific factual information the client may or may not request. “All the way through,

Entering my first year of college I didn’t have any idea of what I wanted to do. I still didn’t choose a major let alone a career. I was stuck in between wanting to make enough money that my family would be taken care of financially and choosing a career that I wouldn’t mind going in to work every day. The one thing that I was certain of was that I wanted to be able to help people in whatever I chose to do. After careful consideration and exploring the options available to me, I have come to the conclusion that I want to have a career in physical therapy. Physical therapy is the treatment of disease, injury or deformity through physical methods rather than through drugs or surgery.
Physical therapy is an exceptional career choice for anyone. Therapists often only work weekdays, and get paid about seventy to ninety thousand dollars per year. Though therapists make an above average salary, many have become greedy and are seeking more money from patients. Audits have discovered that therapists have unethically been charging patients for treatments they never received and overcharging their bills in an unethical manner.

The occupation that I would like to research is Physical Therapy. I personally chose Physical Therapy because I have experienced it myself and I believe I would enjoy doing this for the rest of my life. Physical Therapy is in Health Sciences cluster. In the Health Sciences field Physical Therapy falls under Therapeutic Services and Health Informatics. When I did my Nebraska Career Connections interests test I scored the highest in Therapeutic Services. I then filled out a skills inventory and it ranked number four on that assessment. Considering I scored highly in both occupations means that this occupation is good for me as of right now.
People who have been in accidents or having disabling conditions turn to physical therapists, commonly called PT’s, for help. Physical therapists are professional health care providers who are licensed in each and every state they practice. Physical therapy has a long history of returning people to their maximum level of physical function. Physical therapists use a variety of techniques to restore a function, improve mobility, relieve pain and prevent physical disabilities in their patients. However, being a physical therapist also has many downfalls such as dealing with patient’s insurance, motivating patients, and dealing with criticism in the workplace.
Growing up in a developing country far from Southeast Asia, Vietnam, soon I discerned the difference between/among Asian and American culture, values and beliefs. Since I was young, I was always taught: “Silence is golden”, or “ A good cat does not need a collar of gold”. Our society values quiet and humble individuals who are not necessary to be extremely outgoing; yet their achievements are dominant. This is one of the main factors that sharpened my personality; no doubt that I am a quiet and introvert student. Nonetheless, living in the United State completely changed my perspective, particularly in the period of time when I have begun to be observer and volunteer in various physical therapy settings. I acknowledged that injury treatments and evaluation are processes that required team work. It means the connection and communication among the nurses, doctors and physical therapists are significant (in acquiring..) For instance, in the skilled nursing unit, in some cases, the physical therapist needs to communicate with the wound care nurses to update the patient’s healing and wound conditions before deciding/moving to their upcoming therapy methods. Therefore, as a student in PT program, I need to learn and demonstrate effective communication by interaction with classmates, professors, and faculties in clinical

My journey to pursue an education in physical therapy actually originates from my early childhood. I endured a very impoverished upbringing and my family’s socioeconomic status was below the poverty line. At a very young age, money became the central issue of my life. I found myself worrying about mortgages, health bills, and grocery money. As I grew older, I vowed to myself that I would not endure my family’s financial burdens into my adulthood. I knew the best way to accomplish this was by obtaining a college degree and having a professional career. However, I was unsure what career I wanted to pursue. I experimented with many different career ideas, but during my sophomore, I discovered my passion and skill for physical medicine. For my
Ibrahim, Eid & Moawd (2014) conducted a randomized controlled study to determine if there were differences between the outcomes of children receiving a selected physical therapy treatment and whole body vibration(WBV) and children receiving a selected physical therapy alone (control group). The measurements tested were isometric strength of the knee extensors (weak and strong legs), spasticity, walking speed, walking balance, and gross motor function before and after a 12 - week intervention program. The inclusion criteria were children with spastic diplegia from both sexes ages ranging from 8 to 12 years old, who were ambulatory (with or without walking aids), able to follow instructions, with a 1 to 2 degree of spasticity,
Physical therapists are health care professionals that provide therapeutic services to their patients who have temporary or chronic physical conditions that were caused from injury or disease. Physical therapist also provided therapeutic services to patients after they have gone through surgery to help them gain back mobility and manage their pain. They can also work in preventive care by promoting healthy life styles and instructing individual patients or groups on preventing injury by using exercises that stretch and strengthen muscles. To help their patients try to recover they use massage techniques, wellness plans, and different types of equipment. When a physical therapist sees a patient for the very first time they must do an examination, evaluation, diagnosis, and then put together a physical intervention to start the rehabilitation process. They also work as a team with other health care professionals to help with their patients needs. Physical therapist can really make a difference in their patient’s lives by not only providing therapeutic services but also encouraging and motivating them so they can get better. The main goals of physical therapist are to help their patients retain or gain back lost physical mobility, eliminate or reduce pain, increase productivity and help promote a healthy life style so patients can have a better quality of life and become more independent.
