Physical Abuse, Physiological Abuse in The Color Purple by Alice Walker

In Alice Walker’s book The Color Purple, she was portraying the life that African American women had to go through daily. The books tells a story about how black men would mistreat black women; sexual and physical abuse (Kauffmann). The Color Purple’s purpose is to recognize the heartaches, but by telling it in a story form; showing that by writing a story that can be learned from ones suffering (Fiske). According to Fiske, “The Color Purple is continually equated with suffering and pain… described as the color of "eggplant" (Fiske).The women went through physical abuse, mental abuse, and sexual abuse throughout the whole book.
Men were the leaders and if they did not do what they were told or they talked back, there were always consequences. Black men were not the only people abusing their significant other, but the white men would beat the black people as well (Walker). The Color Purple is put together by all the experiences and common struggles that were faced: oppression, abuse, and violence (Fiske). The books main theme is overcoming the two main separations, sexuality (between females) and a bit of pantheism (Mars-Jones), .Women really did not have much say so during this time and men only wanted them for sex. Their main purpose was to make babies and to become homemakers.
When Celie’s mother left, she played the role of a mother to care and protect her sister, but she started to notice that Mr.__ was looking at her sister in a way that she knew was not okay. Nettie was afraid but Celie knew that God had everything in control (Williams). The quilt that Celie’s sews in the book, represents the characters, and how they are put together to help each other grow and help strengthen themselves. Shug is the only person who shows Celie how it feels to be love. She also helps her found her sexuality and know what she wants. She helps free herself from all of the pain that she was encountering while she stayed with Mr._ (Williams). It is because of Shug, that Celie knew that her sister was still alive, because Shug and she found the letters that were hidden. (Fiske).Sofia also helped Celie better herself by teaching her to stand up for herself. Celie looked up to Sofia because she wanted to be able to stand up for herself, like Sofia could (Hall). The women learned to work with each other to help better themselves which made their life better.
