John Newman was born in Austria on 8 December 1946.
He had a history of involvement with the labor movement and the Australian Labor Party. Spending much of his working life as a union official.
Newman was elected an alderman on Fairfield Council in 1977 and continued on the council for 10 years. He was also Deputy Mayor in 1985–86.

Newman had been the target of numerous death threats from Asian gangs but did not seek police protection. During the night of 5 September 1994 John was shot twice and killed.

Before we get to those details of John Newman’s death lets recap who his supposedly murder was.
Phuong Ngo was born in South Vietnam he had made several unsuccessful attempts to flee the country after the fall of Saigon. Although in January 1981, he made his 13th attempt, and succeeded to arriving in Australia.
Ngo, rose rapidly in local politics. On 8 October 1987, he was elected to the Fairfield Council making him the first Vietnamese born Australian to enter local government.

Phuong Ngo, who had previously attempted to secure Labor Party pre-selection for the seat of Cabramatta; John had run against him as an independent in 1991. Two of Ngo's alleged associates were acquitted. So this proved more evidence for the death of John Newman.

Phuong Canh Ngo was convicted of ordering the killing of Australian MP victim John Newman. It was described as the first political assassination.

Ngo was arrested for Newman's murder on 13 March 1998. Two mistrials were trialed and the third one convicted by a jury in the state of NSW June 2001. The trial was held at the Supreme Court of NSW. In 2004 Ngo tried to have an appeal at the High Court of Australia but failed.

On 14th April 2009, NSW Judge David Patten delivered his report on the Inquiry into the Conviction of Phuong Canh Ngo for the murder of John Newman.

Ngo appealed the Court of Criminal Appeal for an extension of time to appeal against his life sentence. Judge Dunford handed down his decision in which he refused to grant an extension of time, however, in doing so, he considered carefully whether such an appeal would succeed. He found that such an appeal would fail.

Mitigating circumstances Ngo was a vietnamese refugee, so his past challenges were not known. Ngo also had no criminal records previously in Australia, apart from being jailed in Vietnam for trying to escape.

The Fairfield City Council named a local swimming pool on behalf of John Newman as a legacy.

In conclusion we think that the legal system was right to imprison him.
