Characters. The characters dynamics also helped the movie to become a success. For Phoenix and Spartan, they can be considered the perfect representation of the different end of "law enforcement": one is disrespecting the law (Phoenix) and the one who respects the law (Spartan). In the movie, we saw the impact of abusing the use of law to the point that it's not good for the subordinates anymore, and we also saw the impact of not following the law that harmed a lot of innocent people. They also have a different point of view when it comes to the illusion that Cocteau has built into their society. Cocteau framed the minds of the individuals that he's innocent and that the separation of rich and poor is clearly distinct. When Phoenix and Spartan realized this absurd reality, they reacted differently to each other. Of course, Morality will play into hand. Different reactions are expected to be saw, since they are framed in different environments, for Spartan (nature of law) and Phoenix (lawlessness). Phoenix kills, curses, blows up, and disregarded every single rule that was initiated by Cocteau. The only rule that he's patterned to follow is to not kill Cocteau, who also framed by Cocteau to the mind of Phoenix. On the other hand, Spartan, tries …show more content…
Associate Bob and Cocteau is completely boss-secretary relationship. After Cocteau died, because of Phoenix, Associate Bob rapidly changes sides. It only shows that regardless of what you believe in, in the Utopian Society the only division of the people are leaders and followers. Personal decisions that is based from your childhood expriences will not matter anymore. On the other hand, Huxley's relationship to Spartan also shows the falseness of Utopia. Huxley is aware that Spartan is considered as a man who is dangerous and sexual (in their societal perspective), yet she fell in
Imagine two countries, so different from each other, that conflicts were inevitable. Athens and Sparta were not countries, however, they were city-states of Greece with many contrasting values. Athens was the city of the arts, reading, and writing. Meanwhile, military was the only thing the on the Spartans’ minds. Athens and Sparta differ in many ways due to their governments, economies, and cultures.
The one thing we know for certain about Spartan society is that we don’t know much about it. Very few documents and artifacts about the Spartans have been discovered, but the ones that have tell us everything we know. Two of these works are Plutarch’s On Sparta and Xenophon’s Spartan Society. One of the main things these two accounts focused on was the Lycurgan reforms. Through their stories and writings Plutarch and Xenophon had both some similarities and differences when talking about the political, economic, militaristic, and social reforms. One of the main differences when comparing these two writings is how Plutarch gives a historical account of Spartan society and tries to keep objectivity
Spartan Women prove the old saying, behind every great man is a great women, to be true. Everyone has heard of the Spartan warrior men and their courageous battles. What about the women that stood behind those men, the ones who birthed those men, married those men? Spartan women helped to shape, protect, and form the society that they lived in.
Like most Greek states of the Archaic and Classical Era, the Spartan city-state was a militaristic one. Sparta, however, took the idea to its extreme. In order to become the best soldiers, Spartan citizens had to dedicate their entire lives to the occupation. In fact to be a soldier – a hoplite – was the full infrastructure of Spartan society. While most Greek city-states looked down on labor, physical work, and even working for profit, they still had to work for a living, produce something. “The Spartans a...
Thank you Viola for your detailed comments about the HUAC committee activities that created a devastating situation for the film industry. The issue with communistic events indeed interfered with the lives of many and destroyed the careers of actors, especially those who firmly refused to cooperate with that committee. The film Spartacus is one of the most successful films in the history of Universal Studios not only in terms of box office appeal, but it also received six Oscar nominations and was accredited for breaking the Hollywood blacklist. This film was based on Howard Fast's novel, which narrates the story of professionals who refused to collaborate with HUAC committee officials.
A character is just a character until given a chance to evolve. By evolving in a story the character becomes dynamic almost visually alive. That is what Old Phoenix undergoes in the short story “A Worn Path” by Eudora Welty. The audience follows Phoenix, an elderly Negro woman, on her strenuous journey from the far countryside to town. On this trip the audience watches Old Phoenix grow into a character that they begin to form a connection with allowing her to jump out at of the pages. This is accomplished through Welty’s use of physical description, action, and dialogue to bring Phoenix Jackson to life.
The actual process of creating humans is made possible through the use of a single ovary which makes thousands of identical people. Since these people are similar in appearance, thought and relations, they are able to live in perfect harmony with each other. Huxley uses Lenina and Fanny, two of his female characters who are distant relatives from the same ovary, as people who get along well and are on the same page on issues concerning Utopian lifestyles. This is how the government of Utopia, made up of only ten controllers, is able to maintain stability among its people. Since stability is part of the brave new world’s motto, it is a crucial deal for the government to uphold.
Eudora Welty establishes “The Worn Path” in the midst of the twentieth century – in an era where African Americans were not considered as equal to white Americans. Welty tells the story of Phoenix Jackson, an elderly African-American woman, who makes a lengthy voyage into town to get medication for her chronically ill grandson. For most people the journey from the countryside to a town in a city, would not be very difficult. However, the fact that old infirm Phoenix is faced with hindrances and some racist attitudes of people she encounters along the journey; she endeavors onward despite frequent hindrances in her path that include her own deteriorating health and the grandchild’s slim chance of subsistence.
Have you ever sat and wondered, how did Spartacus rebel against Italy? Stated here is everything you need to know about the great warrior Spartacus!
The Spartan military gained eternal military fame when 300 Spartan soldiers defeated an entire Persian army during the Peloponnesian War (Papakyriakou, 2013). Their unmatched army would become the pinnacle of dominance that would inspire later western culture. Sparta was the leader of all things military for any years, but they unfortunately could not keep up with Athens’ navy and the Persian’s sheer number of soldiers. The ideals that Sparta lived by are still evident in some parts of the military today. Not all men are required to fight of course, but the idea of obedience that stemmed from their training is still very evident. Sparta’s legacy is still relevant thousands of years later, and will remain evident as we continue to learn about military history.

Throughout the movie, the Spartans are shown as heavily disciplined, fearless, and almost invincible in combat. Diodorus, another prominent historian regarding the Battle of Thermopylae, describes the Spartans as "superior in valor" and leaving the pass "strewn with dead bodies" (7). Their courage is especially seen on the third day of battle as the Spartans were surrounded. In the face of certain death, they gave their lives for all of Greece and "defended themselves to the last, such as still had swords using them, and the others resisting with their hands and teeth" (Herodotus, 225). This strong fighting spirit and resolve that the Spartans show is reminiscent of elite forces that have fought throughout history, especially in the face of tremendous odds. However, the movie does slightly deviate from the historical record in an attempt to humanize the Spartans. On the second day of battle, the Spartan captain's son was killed, so he went on a rampage and had to be pulled back by the others (1:14:00). Although this most likely did not occur, many have seen loved ones fall in battle and its inclusion presents the realities of war. As the Spartans were people too, so were the Persians that were fighting them. In some portions of the battle, the movie revealed the fear that swept many
Archidamus highlights the four main Spartan ideals to be shame, self-control, good judgment, and moderation. He attempts to connect to this to the theme of courage by talking of it’s antonym; cowardice, “Let no one think that the many do not immediately attack a single city because of cowardice,” (Thucydides, History, 1.83). He outlines the consequences to a city of not being sufficiently courageous as being more susceptible to attack and defeat. The idea of self-control comes into play as one controls themselves regarding the shame they feel before others,
Nelson Mandela was one of the greatest leaders of our time. In the movie Invictus, the devotion and love he had for the South African people is exemplified. The movie was named after a Victorian poem that brought President Mandela strength while in prison. The meaning of Invictus is “Undefeated”, a perfect fit for this movie. The opening scene of the movie shows President Mandela being freed from jail and driving past a field of young boys playing soccer. All the boys start chanting the Presidents name and running to the fences to get a better look. This is the first scene, and an obvious show of support and following for Mr. Mandela. Throughout the movie there are many different styles and approaches of leadership shown. Not only is President
