PHILOSOPHY ESSAY PHI2010 – Introduction to Philosophy Name: Linda Rodriguez Date: 03/05/2014 What Role Does Philosophy Have in my Life? When I think of philosophy I think back to my personal beliefs and experiences. Philosophy for me is a term that goes beyond choosing what's right from wrong, philosophy goes deeper that a decision. Philosophy for me is the roots of my being and what determines the way I live my everyday life. Philosophy refers back to the codes I count on to help me handle situations better and find the right path that will bring me happiness within myself. I strongly believe philosophy can help me live a better life; I think the knowledge I gain from philosophy benefits me into seeing my life differently. Not only I know how I feel but also understand different points of views and learn the act of being open minded into diverse opinions and personalities. Through my twenty-one years of age I have been in situations where I have to think twice about the choices I was going to make. Every single time I was faced with a struggle I would go back to my heritage and what my father thought me. My father who was the one who raised me made a huge emphasis on a set of ideas about how to do something or how to live every single day of my life; he always told me that nothing was going to buy my happiness and peace within myself. I was raised with certain concepts that have determined who I am, and different codes that decide my actions towards different parts of my life. Philosophy has made my existence in this planet a more meaningful and peaceful one. There has been a lot of philosophical parameters that I have been able to experience through my workplace, school and social life. I have learned principles that ha... ... middle of paper ... ...e if other people live my kind of life. I do live my life to the fullest having parameters that help me be the best I can, however I do think we all need to have our own personality and create our codes through experience and gained knowledge that can help set up moral conducts. Each person needs to learn to respect, have integrity and be unique in their own way. One will learn that through struggle and a lot of effort to overcome different situations. I think that like me the world needs a balance where some need to be more than others, for example some people need to be kinder in contrast to cruelty to learn from each other to either be a better person or stay the same. This world needs people who are open to accept changes to change themselves and how they live, because for this world to be a more healthy and happy place we need to start changes within our own.
What does it take to make a human who they are? What influences affect each person in this spinning world of ours? Is it the parents and how much love each applies to raising an individual? Is it the environment to which they are born into? Humans are unpredictable at best, and when someone says they have humans figured out, they are proven wrong. We are creatures of habit who are never the same because of the very influences around us.
The philosophy of Tae Kwon Do is to build a more peaceful world. To accomplish this goal Tae Kwon Do begins with the foundation, the individual. The Art strives to develop the character, personality, and positive moral and ethical traits in each practitioner. It is upon this "foundation" of individuals possessing positive attitudes and characteristics that the "end goal" may be achieved.
With this, we may realize our minuscule role in the universe and begin to approach things more rationally. With philosophy, we can remove our dogmatic assertions and adopt a bigger but less certain perspective of things. Not to mention, it's absolutely fascinating.
Everything that we do in life, is all based around our goal that we want ourselves to attain. Every path you take and every choice you make all results in you trying to get closer to your goal. The goal of which will bring you to having a good life. Additionally, having a philosophy makes it easier to make decisions regarding yourself. You already know what goal you have in mind to achieve.
Philosophy originated from the Greek word “Philosophia” which signify the love for wisdom. It was coin by the Greek philosopher Pythagoras around 500 B.C. It deals with a systematic and critical study of fundamental questions that arise both in everyday’s life and through the practice of other disciplines.
All societies have norms, the expectations that guide the behavior of its members. Here in America we are expected to welcome others with a smile and a hand shake. For example, Lawyers and business men wear a suit and tie to work, for them to look professional. When someone sneezes they cover their mouth, it would be rude to use your phone during a funeral or in the church. If we were to break any of these rules, we would likely be considered weird or rude and we would probably feel embarrassed. Every day we make hundreds of thousands of choices and decisions while interacting with others, we do what is expected of us. I believe changing is possible. Each of us is responsible for ourselves. We can sit back and make excuses for our problems. However, we can also take responsibility for ourselves to see what changes are needed, then try to change it. For example, a person’s style of dress ma...
Contrary to my upbringing, I have always held this close to my heart. To me, it is imperative that a person feels as though they can openly and comfortably be themselves without the fear of ridicule, persecution, or backlash. E.g., throughout my life, even as a young child, I would suppress my surprise when someone divulged an unexpected detail about their life as I can remember trying to put myself in their shoes; appreciating what it took for them to be that vulnerable. In my mind, I tell myself that I hope a person would accept me for who/what I am, so they should be afforded the same decency. Among the numerous values I have discovered to be significant to me, the final one I will list is gratitude. Growing up in a situation of having the bare minimum, being grateful for what was there was ingrained into me early on in my life. Being grateful is not only something I expect from myself, but I anticipate it from others, also. This value can be a double-edged sword as it places expectations on not only myself, but upon people that do not share the same value which can potentially be stressing for both parties. My values have been influenced by the experiences of my past, experiences I hope to have in the future, though mostly by the person I
Perhaps this should discourage me from trying to form a personal philosophy but I can't be convinced that the alternative is very attractive. How could I face each day without knowing what I value and what I repudiate, both within myself and in the world at large.
We humans like to think. Some people take it as a hobby. While others take it as a job. That is basically what a philosopher is. A philosopher is a person that usually thinks about life and tries to find out mysterious questions, and how to solve them. Since a long time ago, in ancient Greece, many people would just meditate about life, and would sit or talk and write books about life. These have always been one of Greek's reasons of why it is so famous. Because of their marvelous philosophers. The most important philosophers from that time and always are: Aristotle, Plato and Socrates.
Philosophy in itself is an unidentifiable subject matter because of the lack of specificity in the fields it touches upon. It is “defined” as a way for humans to strive for ourselves in this reality in which we live. No one person has the answers as to who we are and why we live. The value of philosophy changes in character as history changes, thus the meaning of philosophy is what we as individuals perceive it to be. Though subjective, there are core ideals that unite the beliefs of all philosophy, such as the idea of the self.
... is impossible for one to accommodate for all the desires of others throughout one's life. Asking from a person to give his all to everyone would be degrading to his or her moral identity. Yet, there should always be certain limit of consideration to the people we share our lives with, or even those we interact with on regular basis. Being settled in communities and societies creates a moral obligation on each person towards others. I believe that almost all moral theories fail at some point. Henceforth I think that one should rely on common sense morality, and evaluate each situation according to the limits and conditions governing it. In some situations egoism might be the most rational and moral doctrine to follow, yet in others one should be completely altruistic, so the matter becomes dependent on the moral agent for the evaluation of each situation separately.
The job of a philosopher is to look at life in a way that most people don’t. They take all things into considerat...
Before taking my philosophy self-assessment, I was sure my highest score would fall somewhere in humanistic or social change. I was surprised when I saw that all of my scores fell within six points of each other in all five of the philosophies. After thinking about this, I have determined that I have come to see the benefits of each of the philosophies of education and have drawn pieces from each one in order to shape my own philosophy of education and teaching. Behavioral, progressive and humanistic are the three philosophies that I scored highest in and I will attempt to show how my philosophy relates to ethical teaching of each in today’s classroom. In Nodding’s Philosophy of Education he says, “Thoughtful people continue to examine the old responses, to generate new ones induced by changing conditions and to reflect on current responses in the interest of making education as good as it can be.”
Philosophy as an activity is not simply a way of living like many people have come to believe. It’s a journey, a journey where the philosopher finds them selves constantly thinking. Constantly thinking and questioning authority until you get what you are looking for in a statement. Philosophy in so many ways is similar to trying to look at the inside and outside of a door at once. At first you may think it can’t be done, but then you ask question, which reveal answers and outlets that lead to more question and you realize that there are so many more ways to look at the door, so many more ways to look at the world. So many more ways to look at philosophy. Philosophy as an activity is looking at a door.
Philosophy can be described as a chance for a person to undertake an opportunity to understand themselves, our world and society, and relations between ourselves and one another. Those who are able to study philosophy can find out what is to be human, what kind of person is it good to be, and especially how are we to live a good life. I, myself, have had an opportunity to take a philosophy class and as my time in philosophy is starting to come to a close, I am suddenly realizing how philosophy has changed the aspects and my outlook upon my life.
