Hundreds of children have learned to love playing music on their instruments in a safe and fun environment. Did you know the music programs are being cut out of schools due to budget issues? According to Do.Something.org these programs are proven to improve academic skills, advanced reading skills, and kids are more likely to stay in school. Music teachers go beyond and above to be the best teachers they possibly can be. Mark does this daily while getting up early for lessons and staying late for extra activities.
In “What Makes a Hero?” researcher Philip Zimbardo discusses the fact that selflessness is a heroic quality. He discuss how people who do heroic acts tend to be more selfless than people who don’t. Mark also does not require material
gain to be selfless and that's also discussed in the article. Doing a selfless act is one of the many things a heroic person does. Mark shows this trait by putting time into the pit band for the musical even though it's not in his job description. Pit band takes a lot of time including three hour practices late at night to all day practices. Mark put in all this extra time because he cares. Taking lessons while in the process of learning new music for a concert or an honor band or anything else is very important. Being a reliable teacher is a very important part of teaching. Mark’s band can always rely on him for lessons before and after school. In the article The Psychology of Heroism Kendra states that being reliable is a heroic quality. This research is done by world renown psychologist Philip Zimbardo. Being reliable means people can trust that you will be there for them when you say you will be. Teaching music is a very special job But it also can be very risky. Mark has taken many risks in his career. For example He did a performance that questionable separation of church and state. He stood up for what he believed in knowing it would upset some people. Taking risks is a huge heroic quality. In What Makes a Hero, Philip Zimbardo states that risk takers make up a large population of people with heroic qualities. Volunteering is very important in small communities much like Manchester, Iowa. Mark volunteered in his church for several years. Small churches wouldn’t run without volunteers. Mark also has a strong moral compass growing up in a christian home and following the bible. He grew up with a dad who was a minister. Heroes tend to have strong moral compasses and volunteer. We should be very thankful for the arts in our school and for teachers who put in extra time to make sure children get taught proper music education. Mark has done this for 19 years.Children have learned music in a fun way and it's all thanks to this heroic band director Mark Philgreen .

What is a hero? To our understanding, a hero is a person who is admired for great or brave acts. Joseph Campbell, an American mythologist, and writer wrote The Odyssey. In this novel he talks about The Heroes Journey which are twelve different stages of adventure known as the Ordinary World, the Call to Adventure, Refusal of the Call, Meeting the Mentor, Crossing the Threshold, Test/Allies/Enemies, Approach to the Inmost Cave, Ordeal, Reward, the Road Back, Resurrection, and the Return With The Elixir. The Odyssey is about a legendary hero named Odysseus, who fought among the Greeks in the battle of Troy and went through the stages of The Heroes Journey. Odysseus lived in Ithaca, Northwest of Greece, with his wife Penelope and son Telemachus.
Once this is accomplished, students gain personal pride in achieving this new skill. Music programs offer lots of chances for students to develop new talents, whether that is playing an instrument or singing a song. “Music programs in public schools help to foster a student’s sense of pride and self-confidence” (Hoffman 1), and with this newfound pride, students will develop more experience in other areas, like working with others and communicating with different people. Music plays an active role in student’s lives, and as core subject grades begin to rise, “music education remains a key component in a student’s academic success and in positive social and emotional growth” (Hoffman 1). Music forms dignity in a students abilities, offering to give the students a chance to develop their communication and social skills in a safe environment, and give themselves positive feelings about their accomplishments. Without music programs in schools, students will have less pride in their abilities and will not let them gain that safe environment to achieve these experiences with

George opens his life Lennie knowing it will change his life by not allowing him to achieve his dreams, because he has
There have been many studies done to find how music influences a child’s development. The College Entrance Examination Board discovered that students who took music appreciation classes had higher verbal and math scores than those who did not take the classes. (Stephens 2003) The U.S. Department of Education found that in 25,000 secondary schools, students who were highly involved in the music program did much better in math than any other students. (Stephens 2003) These studies and more have found that involvement in music increases chi...
Selflessness is a quality that isn’t a natural human characteristic. Being able to put others before yourself is noble. Most would say that they would put themselves in danger to save another but acting in that position is a heroic act. The sacrifices that our military service
Selflessness is the act of doing something for others in the hopes of getting absolutely nothing in return; this is a great requirement for being a hero. An illustration of selflessness in the last of the Mohicans is when the girls were captured by the Huron’s after the death of cornel Munro, Hawkeye offers himself in exchange for them “ I am Nathan of the Yengeese, Hawkeye, adopted son of Chingachgook of the Mohican people, let the children of the dead Munro and the Yengeese officer go free. This belt, which is a record of the days of my father ‘s people speaks for my through” he basically just sacrificed himself selflessly even when they refused to listen to him about what he tried to do he continues, telling the Yankee to translate “tell him ill trade him. Me for her… say it... I am la longue carabine, my death is a great honor to the Huron’s take me “ this is Hawkeye giving up himself for the lives of two women who until he saved them from the hands of Magua he didn’t know her. As well as in “sergeant York” although york could have found a way out of the battle field after seeing his comrades go down in battle he decided to single-handedly take on the Germans tactfully in order to save them, when asked by major Buxton if he did it to save lives he said yes, this amazed major Buxton to the point he said “well york what you’ve just told me is the most extraordinary thing of all. This makes his selflessness and the act of putting his life on the line in the quest for saving the lives of others fruitful and lead to him being a true
Selflessness is very strongly supplied through the loss of the man in the water's life. He layed his life down so others could have theirs for a little longer. Rosenblatt exhibits this in his article. The fact that no one knew this man's name makes his heroic act "universal", according to Rosenblatt. Selflessness gave this man the full power to save the people who were fighting to survive. Those who think that it is impossible for one person to have power in an event are wrong. In this setting, if it weren't for the selflessness that propelled this man to
It is important to establish the writer’s credibility when reading. In the essay “Heroism: Why Heroes are Important” by Scott LaBarge gives the definition and insight on heroism. We can trust what he is saying because in the beginning of the essay, LaBarge starts narrating his thoughts about the book Walden by Henry David Thoreau, an American author and philosopher. He continues on to say that he was inspired to also become a philosopher. LaBarge is a philosophy professor at Santa Clara University. If he teaches philosophy at a University, although not directly stated, we can assume that he has education in this field.
Throughout history, there have always been heroes. Those strong-willed, brave individuals who perform courageous acts for fame and glory are prevalent in most cultures.. Societies have these heroes as standards of their cultures’ moral codes. Every society has their own definition of these codes are, so a unifying definition of hero can be hard to achieve. However, Philip Zimbardo says “Simply put, then, the key to heroism is a concern for other people in need—a concern to defend a moral cause, knowing there is a personal risk, done without expectation of reward.” With this basic definition, I will be examining various epic heroes I’ve studied throughout the course of my senior year for characteristics. From the copious amounts of studying, I’ve deduced that Achilles, Odysseus, Aeneas, Socrates, Gilgamesh, Beowulf, and Arthur all have characteristics that make them heroic.
To begin hero’s are not, in most situations, egoistic instead they are carrying. Zachary Dearing is the perfect example. After the chaotic storm in Texas, Hurricane Harvey, many people were stuck in storm shelters. When he took charge of the storm shelter, he was caring and made sure everything was done correctly. In a news article it reads “Dearing was elated that everyone at the shelter was finally getting what they needed.” This quote helps one realize that a hero like Zachary Dearing is not egoistic. Furthermore, another example is Frederick Douglass. In his Autobiography The Narrative Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave
Music education plays an enormous role in student’s overall well being, outweighing the costs of it. In 1994, Congress passed the Improving America’s Schools Act, concluding that “...the arts are forms of understanding and ways of knowing that are fundamentally important to education” (Ford, AdamMcMahon, Maureen). Congress recognized the importance of music education. Now the effort must be made to make a difference. If people really do want the best for the future, music education is key. Ramon Cortines, former chancellor of the New York City public schools stated, “We engage in the arts, we ought to teach the arts, because this is part of what it means to be human” (“Arts Education”). When people eventually realize this, the benefits will be vast.
When teachers are planning their classroom activities they need to include music. Music is a vital part of the learning process. “A music-rich experience for children of singing, listening and moving is really bringing a very serious benefit to children as they progress into more formal learning,” says Mary Luehrisen, executive director of the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation, a not-for-profit association that promotes the benefits of making music.

In the word heroism, you clearly can see the word hero, but what does heroism really mean? Heroism is defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary as a noun and is either 1. heroic conduct as exhibited in fulfilling a high purpose or attaining a noble end or 2. The qualities of a hero. Even though the message is clear of what heroism is in the definition, do we know what it is really? In the eyes of some, a hero is one who doesn't accept failure, but one that tries with enthusiasm repeatedly every time one falls in order to achieve or hope to reach sight of their dreams. The wise pacifist, Mahatma Gandhi, once quoted,”Heroes are made in the hours of defeat. Success is, therefore, well described as a series of glorious defeats.”. This quotation
