Comparably, a sequence of violent altercations between Mexican American adolescents and white soldiers occurred in Los Angeles during the Zoot Suit Riots. The youths were easily recognized by their characteristic "zoot suits." Existing racial biases and wartime fears heightened tensions, as the Mexican American population was unjustly held responsible for societal problems like crime and juvenile delinquency. A mixture of bigotry, media sensationalism, and the obvious cultural contrasts represented by the zoot costumes sparked the rioting. Both incidents serve as examples of how racial tensions can escalate during a crisis and result in violence against communities of color.
