Architecture is the art or practice of designing and constructing buildings. It includes the complex and carefully designed structure of something. Architects are people who practice this art in which they mostly design buildings and homes that are suitable for people to be in and use for everyday needs. Throughout history there have been many influential architects who have designed world famous structures that are located all across the world. One of these architects is Philip Cortelyou Johnson, who designed major buildings in the United States of America. Like most architects, he has an interesting history of how he became what he is, his own architectural style, and his accomplishments.
Philip Cortelyou Johnson was an American architect born on July 8, 1906 in Cleveland,

Ohio. He died on January 25, 2005 in New Canaan, Connecticut while he was sleeping. In his early life, Johnson attended Hockey School in Tarrytown, New York. Later he would become an undergraduate at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1930, “Johnson became the founder and director of the Department of Architecture and Design of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the first museum-affiliated program in the United States devoted to the study and exploration of architecture as an art.” In 1979 Johnson won the Pritzker Architecture Prize and was the first winner of this prize for his Glass House. Philip Johnson's architecture style was the International Style and later he had a role in defining postmodernist architecture.
The International Style developed in Europe and the United States in the 1920s and 1930s. Common characteristics of the International Style of architecture include "rectilinear forms; light, taut plane surfaces that have been completely stripped of applied ornamentation and decoration; open interior spaces; and a visually weightless quality engendered by the use of cantilever construction." The materials used are commonly a combination of glass and steel with reinforced concrete that is usually less visible. I like that the International Style of architecture uses very few major materials in its design and construction yet the buildings of this style look stunning. For example, the Crystal Cathedral is a building of the International style. Its design looks incredible even though it was only built from few materials such as glass, steel, and reinforced concrete. I also like how the use of glass and steel in this type of architectural style makes the building stand out. The glass surrounded by the steel frame presents a stunning appearance to those who observe
it. One of Philip Johnson's most notable works of architecture is the Glass House. This house was built in 1949 and is located at 798-856 Ponus Ridge in New Canaan, Connecticut. This was a residential building and its style of architecture is the modern movement. This building has an interesting design since it is made of glass and almost completely transparent. However the building's design allows for little to no privacy because of its primary composition of glass. An interesting fact about this building is that Philip Johnson lived in this building and was found dead in it while he was in his bed sleeping. Another of his famous architectural designs includes the Crystal Cathedral which was founded in 1955 and completed in 1981. It is a sacral building that is located in Garden Grove, Orange County, California, in the United States and its architectural style is classified under postmodern architecture. The use of glass and steel spiked pillars give the building a unique design that makes it stand out from the surrounding buildings. The interior design is not as appealing as its external appearance since the inside of the building has too many steel beams that are visible which gives the impression that the interior has yet to be completed or lacks a creative design. This building is notable for the fact that it is the largest glass building in the world. One final famous piece of Johnson's architectural works is the Seagram Building. Built in 1957, it is located at 375 Park Avenue between 52nd and 53rd street in Midtown Manhattan of New York. This is a commercial building of the International Style of architecture. The building's design is very standard in terms of its rectangular shape since most buildings are rectangular. However, the black steel frame with the dark tinted glass differentiates it from the surrounding buildings. The use of the yellow colored light throughout the building adds to the building's unique appearance. Johnson worked on this building with German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Johnson's contributed mainly to the interior design of this building while Ludwig was responsible for its structural design. Not surprisingly, this building has the worst Energy Star rating of all the buildings in New York as it is rated 3 out of 100. Philip Johnson's legacy lives on through his architectural works of art. His famous building designs, such as the Glass House, Crystal Cathedral, and the Seagram Building, are constantly admired by many all over the world.
Frank Lloyd Wright is arguably the most important and influential architects not just in America, but ever. This might be because he designed so many buildings, many of which are considered some of the most important American buildings. It also might be because when it came to architecture his ideas were very revolutionary. Frank Lloyd Wright was using what he called “Organic Architecture,” while everyone else was using Beaux-Arts architecture. Beaux-Arts architecture can be Classical, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, or Georgian styles. It uses ornamentation, detailed sculptures and carvings. There is often a marble staircase with elaborate banisters. Frank Lloyd Wright felt that the American society was afraid to live as itself. He thought they were just using everybody else’s culture, premade abroad. Wright believed that America should have their own style and art. Frank Lloyd Wright wanted to make a uniquely American architecture. Wright did create a new kind of architecture, Organic Architecture, the only problem was it had already been created. It had the same ideas ...
Frank Lloyd Wright is widely known and is considered to be America’s greatest architect. He is considered, in the eyes of many, to be the most consequential American architect of the 20th century. “Strongly individualistic, flamboyant, and arrogant, Wright designed and built more than four hundred structures that reflect his architectural genius. Directly and indirectly, he heavily influenced twentieth century architecture with his diverse use of geometry in his designs” (Eisenman).
Architecture, as a profession, did not exist in colonial America. Only the wealthy men of the South were to have some knowledge of architectural styles. Finally gentlemen farmers and merchants were able to create plans and pictures of their dream houses by combining their skills. They were then able to become what was known as amateur architects.
For the United States the Twenties was a time to flourish and enjoy the common wealth, but unlike everything else, architecture was in a creative slump. many artists were having difficulty in depicting a "style" for the new era. Many new technological advances were occuring through the steel industry and the discovery of glass. The architects of this period wanted to incorporate those advances in their designs, thus bringing forth an experimental period. With architects from different backgrounds and cultures working to produce a masterpiece the International Style was created.
Architects of the Elizabethan era designed many amazingly beautiful buildings and structures. Elizabethan architecture went further than just what the architects told the builders to do and the builders are given far less credit than they deserve. They carved out amazingly intricate designs into the wood and stone of these buildings, they poured their souls into their work and were still forgotten because what are they but some random members of the lower class. Elizabethan architecture has more to it than just looks, the structures were built to last luxuriously and each has a history going back before the day they laid the foundation. The architecture descends from the Tudor Style while also admiring Greek and Roman architecture and contained many influences from when England invaded India.
“In the Cause of Architecture” is an essay written by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1908. In this work, Wright outlines many of his architectural values. This text goes into great detail about the philosophy behind Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture, as well as many important milestones in his life, such as working for Adler and Sullivan. This text is useful because it comes straight from Frank Lloyd Wright himself. It talks about many things important to his role as a notable American, such as his influences for his architecture and his architectural
The Chinese-American architect Ieoh Ming Pei (I.M) is known as one of the greatest architects of the Twentieth Century. His long, brilliant career was highlighted by several internationally famous structures. While many of Pei’s buildings were generally accepted by the public, some of them precipitated fair amounts of controversy. The most notable of these controversial structures is his Glass Pyramid at the entrance of the Louvre in Paris. For these reasons, I.M. Pei seems to be an architect who exhibits interest in the avant-garde through both the creative design and aestheticism of his architecture.

Architecture, the practice of building design and its resulting products, customary usage refers only to those designs and structures that are culturally significant. Today the architecture must satisfy its intended uses, must be technically sound, and must convey beautiful meaning. But the best buildings are often so well constructed that they outlast their original use. They then survive not only as beautiful objects, but as documents of history of cultures, achievements in architecture that testify to the nature of the society that produced them. These achievements are never wholly the work of individuals. Architecture is a social art, yet Frank Lloyd Wright single handily changed the history of architecture. How did Frank Lloyd Wright change architecture?
Jencks believes “the glass-and-steel box has become the single most used form in Modern Architecture and it signifies throughout the world ‘office building’” (27). Thus, modern architecture is univalent in terms of form, in other words it is designed around one out of a few basic values using a limited number of materials and right angles. In...
Frank Lloyd Wright Houses, skyscrapers, monuments, and other towering buildings surround our world. Ranging from simple, minimalist designs, to elaborate and unconventional models, architecture has provided basic means of shelter as well areas built for sheer enjoyment. While there are revolutionizing architects around the world, Frank Lloyd Wright, is labeled as “America’s greatest architect,” and his creations have been well-loved by many. Starting off as an engineer, the passion for architecture never left Frank, and he pursued his dream under the instruction of Louis Sullivan, another notable builder. Frank Lloyd Wright is the master behind many structures around the world, and each are attributed to his fame.
Frank Lloyd Wright has been called “one of the greatest American architect as well as an Art dealer that produced a numerous buildings, including houses, resorts, gardens, office buildings, churches, banks and museums. Wright was the first architect that pursues a philosophy of truly organic architecture that responds to the symphonies and harmonies in human habitats to their natural world. He was the apprentice of “father of Modernism” Louis Sullivan, and he was also one of the most influential architects on 20th century in America, Wright is idealist with the use of elemental theme and nature materials (stone, wood, and water), the use of sky and prairie, as well as the use of geometrical lines in his buildings planning. He also defined a building as ‘being appropriate to place’ if it is in harmony with its natural environment, with the landscape (Larkin and Brooks, 1993).
Norman Foster is a British architect who was born in Manchester in 1935. He graduated from University School of Architecture (Manchester) in 1961 and won a scholarship to study Master’s Degree in Architecture at Yale University. Later in 1967 he teamed up with 4 other peers and established a practice called Foster + Partners which was founded in London and is now one of the most well-known international design practices.

In the category of modern art, the field that I’m personally fascinated by is architecture. The reason I say this is that architecture is more than just a piece of art, but a masterpiece of the combination of intelligence, physics, and the work of the imagination. I just happened to be in luck when I visited the MOMA because the museum was currently exhibiting a special collection of archives and the designs of the architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The show displayed all the drafts of the most iconic buildings the Frank Lloyd Wright had designed in his career, and this made it very difficult for me to decide which piece I want to write about because every one were very intriguing.
