Phi Theta Kappa I. Introduction: I am a part of a great honor society called Phi Theta Kappa here at Cowley. Phi Theta Kappa was “established in 1918” (Mesa Community College). We have four pillars that we strive to capture in each of our activities these pillars are, fellowship, leadership, scholarship, and service. “The mission of Phi Theta Kappa is to recognize academic achievement of college students and to provide opportunities for them to grow as scholars and leaders” (Phi Theta Kappa). There is an eligibility that is to be met to be in Phi Theta Kappa. These requirements must be met to be a part of this honor society. According to Phi Theta Kappa, you must be enrolled in a regionally accredited institution offering an associate degree program, completed at least 12 hours of coursework that may be applied to an associate degree, a grade point average of 3.5, receive an invitation to membership from the chapter at the college where presently enrolled, and adhere to the moral standards of the society. What do the four pillars mean? A. Fellowship is “A community of interest, activity or experience; the state of being a fellow or associate” (Lone Star College). 1. We go on trips throughout the year to leadership conferences and during these, we get the chance to make more friends. 2. Being a part of Phi Theta Kappa is also a great way to get more involved on campus because it opens the doors to many more activities on campus. B. Leadership is “The office or position of a leader; the capacity to lead; the act or an instance of leading” (Lone Star College). 1. One way to get a leadership position in Phi Theta Kappa is to be a part of the officer team. a. Being a part of the officer team, we get to organize activities and help with the monthly meetings. b. We have one meeting the second Monday of every month. 2. Another way to be a leader is to be an active member and lead community
activities. C. Scholarship is “The character, qualities, activities, or attainments of a scholar -- a learned person” (Lone Star College). 1. Phi Theta Kappa members get more opportunities for scholarships. 2. Phi Theta Kappa has every chapter do an honors in action project. a. We are given guidelines to follow when picking a topic for this project, this year we decided on the question about whether free in-state tuition should be allowed in Kansas. b. Our goal with the honors in action project is to reach out and impact others about the topic. D. Service is “The act of serving; a helpful act; useful labor that does not produce a tangible commodity” (Lone Star College). 1. We go out of our way to help the community, for example, this year we helped the people that we affected by the flood in Mulvane. 2. We also go talk to the President of the college and discuss another service project that we can do for our community. III. Phi Theta Kappa is a great honor society to be a part of and it can prepare the members for their future. Transferring to a four-year university is easier being a member of Phi Theta Kappa. “The rate of Phi Theta Kappa members transferring to a four-year college or university is 71%. Community college students transfer at a rate of 33%” (Marlowe 3). According to Phi Theta Kappa All four pillars, fellowship, leadership, scholarship, and service play a big role in preparing members for their future. Phi Theta Kappa is a great experience and can challenge you to do the best you can in everything you do.
I am writing to express my strong interest in being a member of Alpha Omicron chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi. I am currently a sophomore at Syracuse University, and will be graduating in 2020 with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a minor in Global Political Economy.
Some of my extracurricular activities include Science Olympiad, STEM Academy, International Club, Advanced Academics Club, and Chem Club. During high school I have participated in various community-based organizations, the two most common being Beta Club and National Honor Society. However while these clubs have allowed me to give back to my community in numerous ways, it was strangely not either of these clubs that expanded my interest in the following particular social issue. Rather it was my involvement in Science Olympiad, specifically volunteering to help run a local Elementary school tournament, that expanded my view of the STEM field.
If granted the opportunity to become a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. I expected to become a better man once finishing the member in take process. Throughout the process I expect to develop many different skills that I can carry throughout life. I would like to become more professional as well as to enhance my networking skills. I expect to become more hands on in different charity events that I’m not familiar with. I would like to improvement my personal status and security, and the meeting of the everyday demands of living.
I believe the biggest skill that I possess that will maintain Alpha Kappa Alpha’s status is the desire to help. As a sorority that holds service at a high standard, I believe having that drive to help in
The mission of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, promote unity and genuine friendships among college women, aid in issues concerning girls and women in order to come up with solutions to eliminate or ease the circumstances they may face, maintain an ongoing interest in college life, while also being of service to all mankind. This sorority has not only empowered women to help others, but it
The first characteristic scholarship, is best defined as a commitment of learning. All National Honor Society members are required to maintain a GPA of 93 or higher. I have worked hard to maintain a GPA to those standards, and I have made my best effort to be on honor roll or principal’s list every quarter of my academic
The four pillars of the prestigious National Honor Society demonstrate the traits I hope to continually develop: as a scholar, a leader, a volunteer and a person of strong moral fiber. I believe myself to be mature and motivated; I have an unyielding commitment to scholarship and intend to make a difference in the lives of everyone around me. The prospect of becoming a member has prompted me to take a look upon what I wish to accomplish as a part of this organization. By becoming an active participant, my goal is to enrich my school experience by means of volunteering in the community, serving as a role model for my peers, and fostering pride for our school.
The purpose of this letter is to inform you about my interest in becoming a member of The Kappa Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. I sought out membership because the members exemplify the epitome of class, grace, and standards. My desire is to inspire young girls and women and make a significant impact on their lives is just one of many reasons I aspire to join your great sorority. I believe in being of service, giving back to the community, and I want to continue on for years to come. Going into the transition into my college career from my freshman year until now, I have encountered many women in the organization that are very active on campus as well as in the community. My past experiences with my past and previous organizations have proved that once my feet are planted my roots will grow and I will stand firm in an organization or committee that I am apart of exemplifying my leadership skills. I am a dedicated member of the National Council of Negro Women. I am on the Bethune Committee, we focus on creating Health programs for the organization and the community. I am a Mentor with the Valdosta community organization G.O.L.F.E.R. (Generating Opportunities in Life for Each
All greek sororities or fraternities have set GPA requirements that must be met in order to remain in the organization. This sets the bar high for all members and keeps everyone accountable for their grades. Another academic benefit is that with all the members there has got to be someone who has taken the same class as you. Members that have the same majors or have taken the same classes can help each other out.
...t the top, but to raise the bar higher for those who are reaching for the top. The men of this fraternity set an example of achievement; they show that being the best isn’t enough. That is why I want to be a part of this fraternity, because I want to be set the example, I want to show that being okay isn’t good enough, and I want to show that being an African-American male, I will not be hindered by stereotypes or any other preconceptions. Being able to be a part of this organization that will push me to be the man I can be, rather than pull me down to a lower level; will grant me the opportunity to be able to show that others can make it, just like I did. Kappa Alpha Psi Inc. is the organization I wish to represent, progress, and be a member of because their objectives and goals, represent what I stand for, and I couldn’t see myself joining any other fraternity.
I have held many leadership positions with organizations on and off Spelman’s campus. I have also committed my Spelman matriculation to actively serving the Atlanta community. I think each of these experiences has granted me the opportunity to network and build connections that will not only benefit the Mu Pi Chapter, but also the sorority as a whole. I have had personal experiences with a lot of the target areas, especially Educational
There are lots of definitions and interpretations for the term LEADERSHIP. One is “A relationship through which one person influences the behaviour or actions of other people” (Mullins, L.J. 2002, Management and Organisational Behaviour, 6th Edition, FT Publishing, p904). Another popular definition would be, “the process of influencing an organization or groups within an organization in its efforts towards achieving a goal” (Johnson, Scholes & Whittington, 2005, Exploring Corporate Strategy, 7th Edition, FT Prentice Hall, p.519)
The Webster Dictionary defines leadership as an office or position, the capacity to lead, the act or an instance of leading (Merriam-Webster, 2011). Leader is defined as; a person who directs a military force or unit, a person who has commanding authority or influence (Merriam-Webster, 2011). The Army defines leadership as the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation while operating to accomplish the mission and improving the organization. (Department of the Army, 2006 pg 1-2)
Many people believe that leadership is simply being the first, biggest or most powerful. Leadership in organizations has a different and more meaningful definition. A leader is someone who sets direction in an effort or task and influences or motivates people to follow that direction. The power point presentation explains leadership is the influence that particular individuals exert on the goal achievement of others in an organizational context.
In today’s modern time, college and universities are competitive and impacted; a lot of students work hard and compete to attend the best. Nowadays, high GPA and grades are not the only important factor that college and universities look for, but being an all-around student who is involved with volunteer work, campus clubs, and sports. Many students take the easy route and turn to clubs or bigger social organizations such as the Greek life. Unlike the average clubs or student organizations participating in a fraternity and sorority is a lifetime affiliation and students are only allowed to be committed to one. These social/cultural groups are filled with members who share similar values and interests that can also offer a college life experience, good or bad.
