Back in the early 1900s, Phenix City was known as “Sin City”. During this time period and true to its name, this town contained a lot of sin through mob/mafia, major issues with the Prohibition Act, and even the mysterious murder of the Attorney General, Albert Love Patterson. So much more gave this town that said name. The events of that time period were so extreme that it urged General George S. Patton to command his army to use tanks to flatten/demolish this town. Thankfully, such command wasn’t followed through. Today, after the “clean up” and numerous name changes, we have a beautiful town called Phenix City. Though we have major darkness in our past, our past has made us who we are today. As a former Miss Phenix City’s Outstanding Teen 2011 and someone who has lived here my entire life, I have an indescribable love for Phenix City. From the educational opportunities and events, to the resemblance of the fictional town, Mayberry, these many reasons make this town so special. Phenix City isn’t just an ordinary town. This description expresses my reasons that make a small, normal city into a place that I proudly call my hometown. Phenix City has many educational opportunities. Phenix City is the home to two (2) colleges; a community college, Chattahoochee Valley Community College, and a satellite college, Troy University. It is also home to the Central Red Devils and twelve (12) other schools. Realizing education is the only road out of poverty; Phenix City is well on its way to being a successful and prosperous city. In this city, numerous educational opportunities are made available to those who dream and wish to better themselves. Phenix City has many ways of entertaining you. Whether it’s receiving success with your education, experiencing the fun of our attractions and events, or maybe even being associated with this improved Mayberry, you always have this wonderful place that you will appreciate in your past. Maya Angelou once said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” That quote is the best description of Phenix City. The people of this town make up that wonderful feeling. When you cross that city line, yes, everything moves slower and it is more laid back.
