Back in the early 1900s, Phenix City was known as “Sin City”. During this time period and true to its name, this town contained a lot of sin through mob/mafia, major issues with the Prohibition Act, and even the mysterious murder of the Attorney General, Albert Love Patterson. So much more gave this town that said name. The events of that time period were so extreme that it urged General George S. Patton to command his army to use tanks to flatten/demolish this town. Thankfully, such command wasn’t followed through. Today, after the “clean up” and numerous name changes, we have a beautiful town called Phenix City. Though we have major darkness in our past, our past has made us who we are today. As a former Miss Phenix City’s Outstanding Teen 2011 and someone who has lived here my entire life, I have an indescribable love for Phenix City. From the educational opportunities and events, to the resemblance of the fictional town, Mayberry, these many reasons make this town so special. Phenix City isn’t just an ordinary town. This description expresses my reasons that make a small, normal city into a place that I proudly call my hometown. Phenix City has many educational opportunities. Phenix City is the home to two (2) colleges; a community college, Chattahoochee Valley Community College, and a satellite college, Troy University. It is also home to the Central Red Devils and twelve (12) other schools. Realizing education is the only road out of poverty; Phenix City is well on its way to being a successful and prosperous city. In this city, numerous educational opportunities are made available to those who dream and wish to better themselves. Phenix City has many ways of entertaining you. Maya Angelou once said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” That quote is the best description of Phenix City. The people of this town make up that wonderful feeling. When you cross that city line, yes, everything moves slower and it is more laid back. In this course we have learned that a city's character is "a legacy for seeing, interpreting, exploiting, and transforming its social, cultural and political opportunities as a physical community." How is it possible for a city like Boston to have character? Well, the institutional and cultural continuity along with the resistance and reconstruction of culture has allowed the character of Boston to be defined simply by the underlying idea of conflict. Through J Anthony Lukas' Common Ground and Richard Broadman's Mission Hill and the Miracle of Boston, we can see that the catalyst for this sense of conflict has been social dissentions between classes and races. These dissentions are clearly detailed through both the Urban Renewal plans of Mission Hill in the 1960s and 1970s and the school busing case of 1974.When looking at the character of Boston one must understand the amount of controversy our city has encountered as well as the way they have identified and resolved these crisis's. Through this deduction along with my own personal experience of living in Boston a step towards finding a distinct character of Boston may be possible.
Growing up in Apple Valley is an indelible experience not too many people go through. Every time I say I’m from Apple Valley people always don’t know where Apple Valley is. I usually say that it is off the Interstate 15 freeway, like you are heading to Las Vegas, right next to Victorville. Then they finally realized that they have heard of Apple Valley. It is very indecipherable to say exactly where Apple Valley is. People constantly think that Apple Valley is simply a big desert and there are only poor quality people who live there. The truth is Apple Valley is a very beautiful place to live.
Some may wonder what it is like growing up as an African-American, right after the slave period. Where segregation, and racism was a much bigger problem than today. Maya Angelou knew what this felt like because she lived through so much agony, and pain, which inspired her to write about her past. Her writing was inspiration for others that have been through the same thing, being told to be quiet, and having terrible childhood dramas. These are just a few of things that make this city great. Its possible that I could have a bias towards my hometown but the rankings and numbers sure seem to support my claim. After reading this I hope you discovered a new interest in the city of Portland and would consider it as a top-moving destination. Maya Angelou's coming of age memoir is titled, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. Generally, within the first few chapters of a novel a reader can deduce the meaning of the title, however throughout this entire novel I never truly understood the meaning until the last few chapters. In the final chapters, the reader can unquestionably identify her struggles growing up and can visually see how it helped her become who she is as an adult. The title I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, illustrates the hardships that Maya, and her fellow black citizens in her community faced growing up in a pre Civil Rights Movement era.

The poem “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” by Maya Angelou, illustrates a bird that has been upheld by bars of steel keeping him from freedom. Angelou’s narrative with the same name documents tragic events that hindered the life of Marguerite. Although the diction in Angelou’s writings clash, they unite to show a deeper more thoughtful message. The similar problem for both the bird, and Marguerite is that they are being held back from living their lives and being themselves. Whether it is truly being behind bars or metaphorically, it stopped them from flying.
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is a memoir written by Maya Angelou. Published by Random House in 1969, this autobiography is 289 pages long. Maya Angelou’s first book focuses on her childhood growing up as a black women in the southern United States. The book starts off when Maya’s parents leave her and her brother Bailey with their grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas. It then follows her through her teen years and end when Maya is sixteen years old and living in San Francisco with her mother. The novel tells of growing up from a young Maya’s point of view, where racial prejudice is a recurring theme.
It’s a rather big city, a good thousand miles away from where I am now. Besides that, It has a different way of life. You can pass someone and not now their name, who their parents are, or what their story is. There’s always something new happening and something different to find out. It’s not like my small town, when the news of something travels what seems like faster than a rocket. The main reason why I’m even drawn to Philadelphia would be because it’s so different from what I’m used to.
Our cities are not what they used to be. Over the corse of fifty years the once proud, strong, and viable hubs of American economic prowess are but a shell of what they were built for. The problems that many cities have are no longer condensed to their city limits and the sprawl that was created over that fifty year period is now threatening to enter the suburban spaces that were created when the city’s citizens left. The metro sprawl is starting to loose it’s attractiveness and unless there is more acknowledgment of the problems creeping out of these cities, the same declining trends will create unoccupied commercial and residential districts not unlike the downtowns of many American cities. Without careful discussion about these trends and our communities embracement of a more regional approach, then there will be more problems in less dense suburban areas, making those problems hard to correct. In order to prevent the spread of this urban blight and avoid low occupancy rates, communities must implement regional tax policies, plan for more effective use of space, and encourage smart growth.
Maya Angelou illustrates in her poem, a bird who is locked away in a cage and longs to be free. The caged bird is held down by chains, his wings are clipped, and feet are tied. The only thing the bird has, is the view of another bird who is free. While the bird who is free enjoys his freedom, he notices here and there the stares of the caged bird. Kansas City is a space that has become a place for me. Growing up in Kansas City, I always assumed this city was my place. By that I mean that it was the place I grew up, the place I learned about and eventually knew all there was to know about it. Kansas City is the place where I can close my eyes and navigate my way around, figuratively speaking. I have looked up in the city in terms of geographical location on Google maps. I have noticed that the numerous highways that connect the smaller counties within Kansas City to one another on Google maps but I never truly read or understood how to read Google maps. I assumed everyone used the map for navigation purposes.
A small town or a big city both can be a memory of a childhood and each one over the years has had much change in them. Maybe the big city has expanded or the small town has arisen from its unknown spot on the map.
Mountain City, Tennessee, is my hometown. I have lived in this small town located in East Tennessee all my life. It has many attractions, shopping places, and great places to eat. Most people don’t realize what the town has to offer--everything from shopping in the downtown area to relaxing in one of the numerous parks. There are also several creeks and camping facilities for the outdoor man. This makes Mountain City a great place to go and forget about all your troubles.
The capital has a colorful history, fascinating culture, and off-the-beaten-path neighborhoods worth exploring. The city is also home to an up-and-coming, internationally recognized restaurant scene that’s putting great food back on the map.
