My passion lies in helping others in their daily lives through the use of pharmaceutical medicines. A Pharmacists role is very vital to ensure the right medicines are supplied to patients in an effective way to benefit and enhance the lives of others around me.I can directly work with patients as pharmacists are the most accessible members of the healthcare team.
I have gained valuable knowledge of Pharmacy and how medicines work by studying Chemistry, Biology and Maths. Throughout the Chemistry course I have developedanalytical and evaluative skills through numerous experiments and the observations and readings which enhanced my pharmaceutical skills. While studying chemistry at A level I became more interested in the wide array of medicinal drugs. I came across the thalidomide crisis which while reading about it horrified me, yet inspired me even more to become a healthcare professional.

During my work experience I had provided and delivered medicines to the community. A useful tool I had was having the ability to speak Panjabi. As the area I did my work experience mostly speak the language, I was able to fulfil what was asked and to help the patient with their issue at hand. Subsequent to attending a week of chemistry and medicine lectures during the Sutton Trust Summer School programme at St Andrews University and attending master classes at local universities, I know that I am committed to continue with my scientific education. The experience of lectures and the practical investigations in the laboratory have given me an indication of how to analyse and interpret data at such an advanced level. Studying pharmacology would allow me to develop my knowledge to a higher level, learning more about for example how the derivative of the opium poppy, morphine, works by binding to opioid receptors in order to reduce the impulses from nerve cells therefore relieving pain. I would also be able to explore further how high doses of morphine can cause respiratory depression, but more interestingly how these effects can be reversed by a competitive opiate antagonist which can bind to opioid receptors without activating them.
I pleased to apply to the PharmD program as the program is one area that corresponds to my career dreams. Being part of this program gives one the opportunity to gain an excellent experience in working and collaborating with various health care providers in the ward. But more importantly, it facilitates a practical environment in dealing more closely with patients. Hence, it helps to provide the ultimate health care services to patients. As a community health care worker I want to deliver superior patient care and improve the quality of life for all citizens especially in South Texas. Currently, I am a pharmacy technician and have been working in pharmacy for the past 6 years. I attended South Texas College where I received my Associates in Pharmacy and decided to further my career. After receiving my associates, I enrolled back into South Texas College were I also received my Bachelors’ in Medical Health and Service Management. Upon receiving my Bachelor’s, I knew I wasn’t ready to quit. I enjoy being a pharmacy technician but I have this passion that I want to do more for my patients.
Since my early schooling days, science and mathematics have always fascinated me given that all components of the world are explained on the basis of these disciplines. In this regard, Pharmacy which is based on Chemistry and Mathematics has interested me a great deal as it has direct impacts on our daily lives. The more I have become familiar with the chemistry and mathematics knowledge involved in pharmacy, the more I have appreciated its significance in improving the lives of people in the community. When you ask people what you think when word “pharmacist” come to your mind? They often say pharmacist have to deal with variety of legal drugs. From my personal opinion, when I hear the word “Pharmacist”, I think of helping others. This inspiration came from my Health Science class I took in twelve grade. Until senior year of my high school, I did not know what I wanted to be. But it all changed, after my first shadowing experience at pharmacist station. There I learn about what exactly the pharmacist career is about, what are some of the equipments used in the field and how I can contribute the knowledge I receive here to help others.
In most cases, when you ask a kid about what he wants to be when he grows up, he would probably answer a doctor, a lawyer, or an engineer. It is very rare that you would hear a little kid saying that he wants to be a pharmacist. I have to be honest pharmacy wasn’t really something that I dreamed about as a child; it was only in recently that I have developed an appreciation to my chosen field. As a licensed pharmacist, I would have the opportunity to counsel patients in a beneficial manner. The importance of the becoming a pharmacist should not be about what the career can give a person in monetary value or the amount of accolades one receives. Instead, the career should be about saving and improving human lives and serving the public. Pharmacists keep people healthy, make them feel better, and try to help the public live longer and happier lives as long as possible. From small infant children to the elderly, everyone needs pharmaceutical care. Sometimes it can be a matter of life and death if medication is not available to the public. During the tenure of five years of undergraduate program I studied variety of different courses including Biochemistry, Anatomy, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pathology, Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Technology, Pharmacognosy, etc. but always found myself more inclined towards pharmacology, physiology and pharmacotherapy of all the different courses I studied and with passing time my interest just grew stronger. As a mother of two young children, I have been fascinated by the effect of proper use of drugs on my children. I have tried to understand the composition of drugs, their chemical and physical properties and uses, as well as how these drugs works within the body and their side effects. Although my husband who is currently a professor in the pharmacy department helped me to understand, I also have a desire to help others and the opportunity to pursue advanced research to extend my knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry. Being a pharmacist requires lots of responsibilities not only because they monitor and deliever medications to patients but also because they should be care giver and communicator by providing appropriate advice to patients and general public on wide range of drugs and increasingly growing new drugs information.

Pharmacy as a career was not always clear to me; my sophomore year of undergraduate studies I knew the route I was on to law school would not fulfill me nor my academic ability as a student. At this crossroads I knew I not only wanted to be challenged in my education, but also utilize my passion to help others. After countless pro/con list and hours of self-reflection I found that pharmacy, as a career, was the perfect fit. Personal Statement I am currently a first year pharmacy student at Washington State University College of Pharmacy. During my undergraduate years, I attended University of Washington, and I received my bachelor’s degree in Public Health. Next, I have earned strong customer service and communication skills from my job at Fareway Food Stores. Since I earned this job in May 2012, I have made it one of my goals to assist and brighten the day of my customers. As a pharmacist, I would need strong communication skills with my patients to fit them with the best prescription possible. Additionally, I would counsel them on the directions of their mediation, any potential side affects, and how to add new medications into their lifestyle with the least amount of stress.
