The book which I chose to share called Peter’s Chair written by Ezra Jack Keats. In the story, there is a boy named Peter whose parents just have a new born baby. Peter notices many things have changed around his house. His parents paint his old cradle, high chair and crib in pink and give them to his baby sister. Peter knows he needs to do something to prevent giving away of his favorite chair. Therefore, Peter decides to run always with all his favorite things and his dog, Willie. While Peter is being outsides, he sits on his chair and realizes that he is too big to the chair. He goes back home and tells his father that he would like to paint the chair in pink and give it to his little sister. The theme of this book is related to family
I had a few of the excerpts that I enjoyed but one of my favorites was Caring Makes Us Human by Troy Chapman. Just the title had me interested because I am someone who cares about other no matter what they have done in their past. This specific excerpt talks about how prisoners started taking care of a cat and felt grace. These prisoners have done some bad things to go to prison yet they can take care of this helpless animal and treat him like a king. Even the guard joined in or enjoyed watching the prisoners just simply talking to each other while petting the cute cat. They are the perfect example of what we should be as humans. Caring for people and things is what makes us human and a lot of people do not understand that yet. Everyone needs
"Number One!" by Jill Nelson is a story that Jill Nelson tells about her father and his beliefs. She speaks about a Sunday breakfast that her family had every Sunday. This breakfast was like there church every Sunday, and her father was the preacher. He always preached about being number one, and he represented number one by holding up his middle finger. Her father never told the family exactly what he meant by number one, and when she was old enough to have the courage to ask, her father had gone through too many stages to remember. This is a good learning story.
Senick, Gerard J., and Hedblad, Alan. Children’s Literature Review: Excerpts from Reviews, and Commentary on Books for Children and Young People (Volumes 14, 34, 35). Detroit, Michigan: Gale Research, 1995..
From learning the terrible truth, to leaving people hurt, a young boy leaves home to find the mysterious waiting for him. In the book, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, by Mark Haddon, Haddon presents a young boy whom finds out what he thinks is the unbearable, but can soon realize that it may be the best thing to happen to him.
The name of my book is Good-bye, Chicken Little, and was written by Betsy Byars. Betsy Byars has written over fifty books for young people. Her first book was published in 1962 and since then she has published regularly. She also won the Newbery Medal in 1971 and the American Book Award in 1981. Good-bye, Chicken Little is a book written for younger readers which I consider to be an adventurous book.
Not having much knowledge of this type of children’s literature I decided to read one of her stories to include in the discussion and have become more educated on the types of books she is reading. Dogs of War by Shelia Keenan focuses on the military dogs who serve during World War I, World War II and Vietnam. The storyline of third story in the book tells the story of a boy who moves to a new place, gets a new dog and discovers a solider living near by who is struggling after the war. They start to interact with the dog and the solider begins to open up about the hardship of war and his military dog Sheba. The illustrations by Nathan Fox really capture the emotions of the solider and the pain he is dealing with along with the war setting in Vietnam. The audience for this book is geared for boys, but will appeal to dog lovers like my daughter. If it is appropriate for anyone under 9 or 10 is still in question. It is a heavy topic and it does include soldiers dying and war
Dr. Seuss 's Go, Dog. Go, was a book I remember reading a lot (probably because I loved dogs so much). When I was younger I used to go to my aunt 's house during the summer, and my grandmother would always be there. She enjoyed reading, so she made me read a book a week, whether it was from the library or from the books on the shelves at my aunt 's house. I did not enjoy going over there to read, especially since it was summer, but I did get rewarded after finishing a book with a game of Guess Who? with my grandmother.
The first book that I chose was, Maria Had A Little Llama by Angela Dominguez. This book was a twist on the classic nursery rhyme Mary Had a Little Lamb. It had every page of the rhyme in both Spanish and English. I think this is a good way to introduce another language to young children because it is a rhyme and story that the children are familiar with. Although the story was a little bit different than the original nursery rhyme, it has an adorable twist where the llama follows Maria to school. Maria Had A Little Llama received the Pura Belpre Honor for her Illustrations. She was born in Mexico City and grew up in Texas. Her website is http://www.angeladominguezstudio.com/.
For my book I chose to read The Body by Stephen King. This novel is about four young boys taking a journey to find a body somewhere in the woods that is at the county line. This story is about more than just four boys going on an adventure its about them becoming closer to each other and learning real life lessons along the way. The four boys are all going into their first year of middle school so this is a time in their life when they learn things that will help them in life.
There isn’t a better way to teach a child an extremely valuable life lesson than through a small sweet story of literature. And there isn’t a better example than “The Three Little Pigs” by Joseph Jacobs. As everyone knows, the premise of the story is about three little pigs trying to survive from a wolf who is trying to eat them. As Carol, from Carol’s Notebook states,
The book, A Sick Day for Amos McGee, by Philip C. Stead is a Caldecott gold medal awarded picture storybook. It is a book about Amos, an elderly man, who works at the City Zoo, but always makes time visit his zoo friends. Amos visit his elephant friend who he plays chess with, then visits the tortoise who he races with, his friend the penguin who he sits quietly with, his friend the rhinoceros who he always lends a handkerchief due to his runny nose, and then his owl friend who he always reads a story to. One day Amos got sick, and did not appear at the Zoo. Since all his animal’s friends worried, they decided to go visit him, and take care of him just like Amos did to them.
On the first day of class, our teacher had a ton of books with different possible topics, and at first we really just couldn’t find anything that interested all of us. It was difficult to agree on anything completely, considering there were four of us, and then our teacher brought over a book called “Ten Days a Madwoman” about Nellie Bly, and we immediately were interested and agreed.
Over summer we were assigned to read two books. The first one was the loved one by Evelyn Waugh, which was a relatively short book. And the second one was the endurance by Caroline Alexander, which was a pretty thick book.
I choose to read the book “The Color Purple” by Alice Walker. The book talks about the life of an African-American lady by the name of Celie that lived in the southern United States in the late 1930s. It addresses the numerous issues that included the low ranking of American social culture. In the book it talks about how she wrote books to God because the father she had would beat her and rape her. He also got her pregnant and then she gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. Her father end up taking the baby shortly after birth.
Books that make me want to continue on to the next sentence and keep me wanting to know more. One of my favorite books is the Outsiders by S.E Hinton. Even though it was a must read book during my seventh grade year. It is by far one of the best books that I have read and I can read it over and over again. I am not the type of person that’ll just look up books to read or go to Barnes and Noble, grab a book and sit with a cup of coffee from Starbucks, and read. That is not me. I do not like reading, I do not like sitting there reading words, it honestly puts me to sleep. In the last 12 months I’ve read one book, Pride and Prejudice, because it was required for summer reading. But, what I do enjoy doing is writing. I’ve always loved to sit down and write stories and let my creative side come out. I have entered many creative writing contests and have had two poems published in the Creative Communication: A Celebration of Today’s Writers book.
