Poverty is a deadly and remorseless plague that sits over humanity weeding out the unfortunate. Within our world of seven billion people, one in every five people are surviving on less than one dollar a day, and the top 1% of our world's richest earn the same amount as the lowest 57% (Facts on Poverty). Peter Singer, who is a professor in bioethics, proposed a solution that in the plainest of terms advocates that whatever money is being spent on luxury, not necessity, should be given away. Peter Singer claims that charitable organizations should be our focus in the fight against poverty, and at the same time this would reduce crime rates and increase the health standards all across the world. Peter Singer proposed that money that is spent on luxury should be given away to overseas organizations such as UNICEF and OXFAM. This idea was exercised in a way by Warren Buffet and Bill Gates as they advocated for Billionaires to donate half of their wealth in what they called The Billionaire Challenge. In total the group compiled more than two-hundred billion dollars in donation money for charity(Warren Buffet). Where this money goes is up to the people donating consequently The Billionaire Challenge does not specifically help impoverished people. However the point is that these billionaires are donating money in the first place. While half of Warren Buffet's wealth is definitely nowhere near all the money that a billionaire would spend on luxury, it is the idea of donating large amounts of money to less fortunate people that combats the effects of poverty.
