Timothy Noah once said, “What type of ‘person’ is the for-profit corporation? A spoiled brat – all rights and no responsibilities, a traditional conservative argument would say” (Noah). Those words are ironic because corporations should be full of responsibilities. Since people pay for their services, we should be able to trust what they do. There are many companies that seem innocent but are doing terrible or unwanted things behind customers’ backs. For example, Petco has been founded in 1965 and has been one of the most trusted pet company in the United States. They seem to treat the animals right; it has a very clean and organized atmosphere. Peta, the People for Ethical Treatments of Animals, have pushed many ideas that the Pet Industry has been hurting animals. They seem to catch on to the negative things, and blast in on the news. Many are starting the believe that Peta is causing problems that do not actually exist. Peta is known to put out very shocking advertisements to send the message across about animal rights, animal abuse, and many other messages. Matusitz and Forrester stated in his journal that, “the effectiveness of moral shock strategies is well documented in animal rights movement literature. However, animal rights organizations are cautioned that an approach of this nature can potentially offended and alienated some members of the target audience, as well as compromise the organization’s reputation and credibility” (Matusitz and Forrester). The advertisements have positive effects on some, but for others, they end up being offended or laughing because the pictures are so extreme. For this reason, Peta has lost some of their credulities. Many start to believe that the animal problems did not exist in the first place, or that they are trying to create a problem that should not have been there, to begin with. Since people use their time and money to all of the corporations every day, it is their responsibility to give back by doing what they claim to do. There are many companies today that do many controversial things that concern the customers. Sadly, it has become a normal thing to see negative things about companies and corporations on the news. Even if it looks clean and reliable by the looks, we never know what kind of identity they are actually hiding in the inside. It should never be that way because we should not be able to find anything controversial from any company. Instead of having customers feel like corporations are “Spoiled brats”, they should work their way through to be able to have them think they are good, genuine
