Timothy Noah once said, “What type of ‘person’ is the for-profit corporation? A spoiled brat – all rights and no responsibilities, a traditional conservative argument would say” (Noah). Those words are ironic because corporations should be full of responsibilities. Since people pay for their services, we should be able to trust what they do. There are many companies that seem innocent but are doing terrible or unwanted things behind customers’ backs. Peta, the People for Ethical Treatments of Animals, have pushed many ideas that the Pet Industry has been hurting animals. They seem to catch on to the negative things, and blast in on the news. Many are starting the believe that Peta is causing problems that do not actually exist. Peta is known to put out very shocking advertisements to send the message across about animal rights, animal abuse, and many other messages. Matusitz and Forrester stated in his journal that, “the effectiveness of moral shock strategies is well documented in animal rights movement literature. However, animal rights organizations are cautioned that an approach of this nature can potentially offended and alienated some members of the target audience, as well as compromise the organization’s reputation and credibility” (Matusitz and Forrester). The advertisements have positive effects on some, but for others, they end up being offended or laughing because the pictures are so extreme. For this reason, Peta has lost some of their credulities. Many start to believe that the animal problems did not exist in the first place, or that they are trying to create a problem that should not have been there, to begin with. Since people use their time and money to all of the corporations every day, it is their responsibility to give back by doing what they claim to do. There are many companies today that do many controversial things that concern the customers. Sadly, it has become a normal thing to see negative things about companies and corporations on the news. Even if it looks clean and reliable by the looks, we never know what kind of identity they are actually hiding in the inside. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, PETA, is a global organization that focuses their attention on protecting animal rights and cruelty. They have been established for over thirty years and have run several provocative and informative advertisements depicting animal cruelty and the ban against it. These advertisements have caused much criticism for their efforts to help animals and have caused several public arguments between other organizations. This particular PETA advertisement has caused much controversy due to its bold choice of words that has offended its audience.
Abuse towards animals is recognized by many in the commercials shown on television, including the Sarah McLaughlin song and the pictures of animals starved and beaten. The commercials are shown quite regularly and give viewers a small look into the world of animal cruelty. What the commercials do not show, however, are the countless cases of people getting away with violence, as well as the hundreds of thousands of animals who did not live to make the commercials. Television, radio, and internet ads often depict and portray the lives of animals living in shelters, and ask the public to donate money each month for the cause. Without a doubt, this is the extent of what many people can say their experience with animal cruelty consists of: pictures and short video clips of half-dead dogs and cats left to die in over-crowded housing.

It seems obvious that large corporations have a tendency to ignore the negative effects of their actions in favor of profit. This example, although sensationalized, still says to me that with power comes responsibility. It affirmed my belief that a corporation’s goal cannot be just to provide profit to shareholders, but there must also be an element of social responsibility.
Corporations that place an importance on corporate social responsibility usually have an easier experience when dealing with politicians and government regulators. In compare, businesses that present an irresponsible disregard for social responsibility tend to find themselves fending off various reviews and probes, often brought on at the assertion of public service organizations. The more positive the public insight is that a corporation takes social responsibility seriously; the less likely it is that innovative groups will launch public campaigns and claim government inquiries against it.
Particularly, there has been a rising importance of corporate social responsibility as the public expects more from firms to care for its stakeholders. Although immoral business decisions may sometimes be most cost-efficient and profitable, stakeholders like the consumers may be repulsed by its unethical conduct since the consumers’ interest may be conflicted. For instance, consumers may seek animal cruelty-free products whereas businesses may utilize animal testing methods for reasons such as self-protection when the company is charged by injured customers (Why do companies continue to test products on animals?). An example would be cosmetic companies that are still conducting animal testing such as Revlon. Although Revlon announced that they do not have animal testing practises, but the fact remains that Revlon is still keeping their “required by law animal testing stance” (COMBS, Tashina, 2014), a clear self-contradiction which may negatively affect their corporate image. Since business image is interconnected with its credibility, hence if a firm is perceived negatively by its stakeholders, a destructive chain effect leading from bad corporate reputation to lower sales may potentially put a business into slumps.
