People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is an animal rights organization that was founded in the 1980s by Ingrid Newkirk and Alex Pacheco. The origination became known during the Silver Spring monkeys case, which was a Supreme Court case over experiments performed on 17 Macaque monkeys in the Institute of Behavioral Research in Silver Spring, Maryland that happened after authorities and animal rights activists had done a search warrant in the building. Although many people believe that PETA isn’t causing any harm when it comes to protecting animals, there are others that believe they’re causing harm when attempting to protect them. The animal rights organization has been known for their controversial and possibly hypocritical tactics …show more content…
of trying to get people to support animal liberation and go vegan, in addition to stirring up some controversy both inside and outside of the animal rights movement. A infamous example of this controversy is their so called No Kill Shelter. In the year 2010, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) decided to do an inspection after a Virginia resident sent PETA’s reply to them after she had asked them if it operated an animal shelter.
After reviewing two months worth of records, they discovered that 245 out of the 290 animals taken in were killed within 24 hours, including ones that were completely healthy and acceptable for adoption. Only 17 were reported to be adopted or in foster homes. The organization is also known for their usually offensive and outrageous advertisements, media campaigns and videos that are against using animal fur and products, eating meat, using animals as entertainment, animal experimentation and dissection . Some cases of these advertisements and campaigns is the banned 2018 Super Bowl advertisement “Go Vegan”,which was one of their many attempts to convince people to become vegans. PETA did another controversial campaign in 2003 called “Holocaust on your plate”,which compared the abuse and treatment of the Jews and many other ‘Subraces’ in concentration camps done by the Nazis during World War II to how animals were treated on farms. The highly offensive campaign was accordingly banned in Germany for being unimportant and common, along with comparing the victims to caged

Strain Theory best explains the emergence of PETA. PETA believes that society has a big problem with the way that they treat animals which led to their first protest event. The case that really got PETA mobilizing and famous was the Silver Spring Monkeys. To sum up this case, they basically volunteer to work at the Institute for Behaviorial Research and they were brought into see how everything works. She found out that these monkeys were treated cruelly because they live in tight spaces, they were injured and although they applied bandages; it was only once and then they would use reusable old bandages that were already dirty, not given food, and in fact these monkeys were pretty much had abnormal behaviors. They took photographs as evidence
The modern fight for animal rights has been geared toward factory farms and the removal of animal testing and ag-gag laws. Protection for test animals and farm animals has become an important focus for many animal rights groups including ASPCA. The end of uncomfortable and inhumane treatment of animals is still a fight thousands are fighting
Violence is everywhere in the United States of America. Many people in America and around the world have been a victim or know someone who has been a victim of violence. Over 22 million women in the United States have been raped in their lifetime according to the website, Victims of Crime. This number is significant. Advertisements could play a role in making violence more acceptable in our society. PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, is known for having shocking advertisements. This pro-vegan and pro-vegetarian nonprofit organization has always been a topic of interest. Many of PETA’s ad campaigns are related to sexuality, violence, discrimination against how people look, and dominance over women. There are many pro-vegetarian and pro-vegan ads that do not degrade women and still are persuasive. Jean Kilbourne writes about violence and the degradation of women in advertisements. Kilbourne explains her point of view in her piece, ‘“Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt’: Advertising and Violence.” Considering Kilbourne’s argument, PETA ads are a concern because of the suggested violence while other pro-vegan and vegetarian ads are not.

There are also amazing things that they are trying to accomplish. Some of the best things that have happened recently are that has been for the animals is they have banned the import and the abuse of dogs in puppy mills (Establishment that breeds puppies, typically on an intensive basis and in conditions regarded as inhumane), banned the import, sale and the testing of animals in cosmetics in Europe and India, began transferring of 100s of chimps in labs to sanctuaries, stopped the killing of horses for human consumption, and stopped wolf hunting in Wyoming and Michigan. Those are just a few things that they have done. The list of things they are working on is very long too. They are working on protecting sharks from finning (the process of which people kill sharks and take the fins leaving the other parts in the ocean), elephants from ivory poachers (people who illegally hunt, and kill, elephants just for their ivory tusks), and even are saving Rhinos’ from horn trade. They also get companies to help raise awareness like Nestle. Nestle now has adopted amazing reforms for farm animals. The Humane Society even has created a big cat habitat for the tigers that were involved in trades. They are trying to put a stop to all the animal fighting clubs too. The Humane Society has worked so hard to provide more care to animals than any other organization in the world. They have helped, even saved more animals than you could imagine.
I will admit that PETA has done some things that go along with their animal rights ways and have helped many animals in need. Some things they have done to help the animals would be, helping rescue animals who are in need, bringing the mistreatment of animals to the public’s attention, and relocating and finding homes for those animals who have been abused or neglected. This is People for the Ethical Treatment of Animal’s side, However there is always two sides to each story.
The campaign against Whole Foods and Chipotle for allowing factory farm to continue that killing of animals is what ‘Direct Action Everywhere’ is fighting against to inform the general population that there is an issue with “humanely” killing animals for consumption. Direct Action Everywhere’s is an organization whose “mission is to empower activists to take strong and confident action wherever animas are being denigrated, enslaved, or killed, and create a world where animals liberation is a reality.”
Sadly this happens to various animals each year that are brought to Kill Shelters. The ASPCA has stated that three to four million animals are euthanized in shelters in the United States. An absolutely shocking 60% of all animals that belong to shelters(McLellan). Many of these animals that are irrationally killed are completely worthy of adoption. The main reason for all these senseless killings is overpopulation.
"Animal Cruelty and Human Violence : The Humane Society of the United States." RSS. N.p.,
The first animal welfare organization, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), was founded in 1824 in London to promote the protection of domestic animals.
“There can be many reason for animal cruelty, like any other form of violence, is often committed by a person who feels powerless, unnoticed, or under control of others. Some who are cruel to animals copy acts what they have seen or that have been done to them, others see harming an animal as a safe way to get revenge against--or threaten-- someone who cares about that animal”. (“Animal… Statistics”) Concerns towards abusing animals have gone up in the past. Although there are not many cases on animal abuse, many have occurred. Abusers are charged with Criminal Animal Abuse and then sentenced to life in prison. Some animals that are physically abused are sometimes rescued by Animal Control, and are taken it to an animal shelter. However, many shelters have not had the space to keep the animals so the workers would have to put them down (Carol Roach). Researchers have shown that the main animals getting abused are dogs, chickens, horses, and livestock (“Animal...
"The Case For Animal Rights" written by Tom Regan, promotes the equal treatment of humans and non-humans. I agree with Regan's view, as he suggests that humans and animals alike, share the experience of life, and thus share equal, inherent value.
About 2.7 million animals are euthanized and 2.7 million shelter animals are adopted each year.
The most common victims, based upon a report by the Humane Society, the largest animal protection organization which is also rated the most effective by its peers, tend to be dogs; pit bulls in particular. From a 2007 media report of 1,800 cruelty cases...
Adams). Derrida maintains “meat eating is not a simple, natural phenomenon, but is irreducibly linked in our culture to masculinity along multiple material, ideological, and symbolic lines” (quoted in Adams). Despite the absence of “real” meat, the patriarchal myth of masculinity remains on its website: “men are strong, men need to be strong”, thus men need vegan bacon. With this in mind, PETA’s use of sexually explicit and misogynistic ads makes sense. The group is attempting to reach male meat eaters (“Make your ‘stock’ rise”) and assume the familiar patriarchal subject cannot and should not change. The reiteration of such advertisements show that apparently you have to keep participating in the traditional construction of maleness
