Throughout history, it is not uncommon for stories to become silenced; especially, when such a story is being told by the voice of a slave's. Slaves were not granted the same equal rights as the free men. They also were not seen as whole individuals -- worth less than the average citizen, to be sold and traded as property. Abina Mansha was a female slave whom once lived in Asante but came to live in the British Gold Coast Colony during 1876, after being sold to Guamin Eddoo by her husband, Yawawhah. As Abina claims in her testimony, her purchase was no accident. "Slavery had been abolished throughout the British Empire, a law extended into the Gold Coast in 1874. Yet ironically, the demand for laborers on the growing palm oil plantations and in the houses of those who own them means that the trade in slaves into the Gold Coast does not dry up following the war" (Getz and Clark, 2011, p. 6). Abina And The Important Men: A Graphic History written by Trevor R. Getz and Liz Clarke, but spoken in different perspectives, helps shed light on Abina's personal lifestyle; while the date and location provides us with further insight on how the world reacted to 19th century Western culture.
In the novel Segu, Maryse Conde beautifully constructs personal and in depth images of African history through the use of four main characters that depict the struggles and importance of family in what is now present day Mali. These four characters and also brothers, by the names of Tiekoro, Siga, Naba, and Malobali are faced with a world changing around their beloved city of Bambara with new customs of the Islamic religion and the developing ideas of European commerce and slave trade. These new expansions in Africa become stepping stones for the Troare brothers to face head on and they have brought both victory and heartache for them and their family. These four characters are centralized throughout this novel because they provide the reader with an inside account of what life is like during a time where traditional Africa begins to change due to the forceful injection of conquering settlers and religions. This creates a split between family members, a mixing of cultures, and the loss of one’s traditions in the Bambara society which is a reflection of the (WHAT ARE SOME CHANGES) changes that occur in societies across the world.

Chinua Achebe was an influential Nigerian author during the 1900’s who was credited with his three essays which have been fused together into the book “Home and Exile”. In his stories he discusses things such as his own Igbo people, the problems with colonialization, the strength that stories can have and many more topics. A big part of his essays are on his thoughts of colonialism, the impact it has had on his home of Nigeria, and how stories written by others either helped justify colonialism or rejected it. Chinua argues that stories have their own power to fight, and while stories themselves do not have the ability to directly fight colonialism; they do, however with their power of words, stories can motivate and encourage people to stand up against colonialism. In proving this thesis to be a true statement, I will be providing evidence of the how, why and the extent to which stories can fight colonialism.

“Brink reaches for that unexpected potent strand of Afrikaner thought: an almost religious repugnance toward governmental corruption. And by using a ‘very ordinary’ Afrikaner as victim, Brink proclaims that no one in South Africa is any longer safe (Redman 5).” Andre Brink’s powerful novel, A Dry White Season, was made into a film directed by Euzhan Palcy about ten years after it was written. Euzhan Palcy did an excellent job directing her film, which was intended to open the world’s eyes to the injustices being committed in South Africa as a result of the apartheid, and it is successful in doing so. However, it fails to reach out to the reader, as does Andre Brink’s novel on which it was based. The movie omits many characters and actions that take place in the book in its attempt to expose the political struggle in South Africa. But what it lacks is the personal struggle that is the main focus of the novel. The novel uses this strategy of personalizing the main character’s situation to involve the reader further than the film does- to the point that it leaves the horrible situation in the reader’s hands- both literally and figuratively. The reader must decide what to do with what has fallen into his or her lap.
Awa Thiam speaks on the topic of the daughters of black Africa trying to find themselves. She also states the comparison of the black women struggle with the European women. Thiam is arguing the point that the European feminist imposed the false argument “Rape is to women what lynching is to Blacks” (Thiam 114). Women in the text suffered from double domination and double enslavement by the colonial phallocratic. Thiam explains the false consciousness of the black women as well. The goal for the women is to achieve total independence, to call man bluff and all alienating influences.
Throughout her novel, she greatly succeeds in showcasing the black individual’s struggle with identity and society’s perpetuation of this struggle through the occurrence of racism. Through the main character Ifemelu’s life as a Nigerian woman who migrates to America and then ultimately returns after thirteen years to Nigeria, one can see her internal struggle of belonging and alienation. Before her journey within the United States, Ifemelu has no knowledge regarding the concept of race. While those of lighter skin in Nigeria were treated slightly better, there was no real distinction between races. Similarly, black women did not struggle with identity before slavery brought forth the stereotypes of African American women. Ifemelu “did not think of [herself] as black, [she] only became black when [she] came to America” (Adichie 359). Consequently, this will always be the first distinction white America will make in regards to Ifemelu. Neither her intellect, nor her personality, nor her values will be the determination of who Ifemelu is as a person, but the color of her skin will enduringly be the judge of that. Ifemelu’s black identity in the United States is a direct consequence of the obvious and elusive stereotyping she experiences at the hands of white individuals. While their beliefs are strong, post colonialism has placed an inferiority complex upon the culture of the people. As opposed to highlighting their relatively new freedoms, Achebe speaks as if Africans let their beliefs serve as a shadow cast upon them in the high technology modern world that they are looking to find. Achebe wants to build a confidence in his people that makes them as proud of their culture as any other. He mentions "anti- racist racism" as a way to uplift the African people. With African writers implanting the positive power of ethnocentrism and acceptance, the people will gain the confidence to infuse their old ways with that of the new world.
Being born and raised in Ukraine I have never experience racism in my life until I came to the United States. In the land of freedom I 've witnessed inequality the most, and not only towards African - Americans, I felt people being racist towards me, despite my so-called “white” look . As a student in the City College I was fortunate to take such courses as African Literature, Harlem Renaissance, African - American Detective Fiction and Toni Morrison class, that helped me understand the problem of racism considerably better. The new, undoubtedly interesting and challenging course, Advanced Topics in Anglophone Literature, gives me a chance to explore in depths the struggles of African ex-colonies after they gained their independence. My latest discovery Why Are We So Blest? by Ayi Kwei Armah is the beautifully written novel that not only discusses the complexity and enormity of Africa’s problems, but brings into the light the topic of racism. The scholar Derek Wright in his studies claims that the book is a racist novel that depicts “fictional” racist “white man” perceptions towards “black people.” After analyzing the novel I have to disagree with the scholar.
