Introduction
I. Attention-getter: Every day in America millions of people are being poisoned, and you could very well be among them.
II. Thesis Statement: Concerns for water fluoridation stem from the toxicity of fluoride, the dangers fluoride pose to the body, and equal declining tooth decay seen for fluoridated and non-fluoridated countries.
III. Credibility Statement: It is fact that we all consume fluoridated water regularly; whether it’s through water directly, food, or other beverages, we could very likely be putting ourselves at risk.

and doctors believe fluoridation can be very harmful to the body in various ways. C. There is no discernable difference between tooth decay in the minority of countries that fluoridate their water and the majority of countries that do not. [Transition to Body: All three of these concerns should not be taken lightly, so let’s break each one down more thoroughly.] Body: I.
First Main point: Fluoride is a highly toxic element.
A. Sub-point #1: Currently, the primary source of fluoride for the majority of public water supplies is fluorosilicic acid. This is a byproduct of phosphate fertilizer manufacturing (Main 2013).
1. Sub-Sub-point: Promoters like to say it’s a nutrient, when scientifically it has never been classified as a nutrient because it is a very powerful toxin.
B. Sub-point #2: Fluoridation advocators often say that nature thought of fluoride first in the fact that it’s naturally occurring. However, there are a lot of toxic substances that occur at naturally high levels, such as arsenic. This does not mean they are safe.
1. Sub-Sub-point: The main fluoride chemical that is added to water is not what most people would call a naturally occurring compound. It is a corrosive acid captured in the air pollution control devices of the phosphate fertilizer industry.
2. Sub-Sub-point: Christopher Bryson states, “Fluoride is known to be one of the most toxic chemicals in the world.” (2004).
[Transition: Since fact states that fluoride is a toxin, we should easily be able to reach the conclusion that it most likely causes damaging effects to the
body.] II. Second Main Point: Many extremely qualified doctors and researchers have come to such a conclusion: fluoride can indeed be extremely harmful to the body. A. Sub-point #1: Many recent studies have shown that fluoridation no doubt damages health. 1. Sub-Sub-Point: In 2006, Dr. John Doull, a well-known toxicologist was the leader of a committee at the NAS that published a comprehensive 500 page review of fluorides toxicity. The report concluded that fluoride is an endocrine disruptor, and can affect many things in the body such as: the bones, brain, thyroid gland, pineal gland, and blood sugar levels. 2. Sub-Sub-point: Fluoride most certainly affects many tissues in the body besides teeth. B. Sub-point #2: Reviews of literature done by the US Environmental Protection Agency say that, fluoride is the amongst the 100 chemicals listed where there is substantial evidence of developmental neurotoxicity (Connett 2012). 1. Sub-Sub-point: According to the National Research Council (2006), “it is apparent that fluorides have the ability to interfere with the functions of the brain” (Connett 2012). 2. Sub-Sub-point: Over 100 animal experiments have taken place that show evidence of fluoride accumulation in the brain damaging, as well as altering mental behavior, and impacting learning. 3. Sub-Sub-point: Research results represented a high consistency between fluoride exposure and reduced IQ. 4. Sub-Sub-point: Dr. Connett examines the shift of the IQ curve and it is quite disturbing to find that the number of geniuses is halved and the amount of mentally disabled doubles. Dr. Connett continues to say, “This is serious folks, risking lowering the brain power of your population, all that for a small amount of tooth decay, which can be handled other ways”. C. Sub-point #3: According to a recent national survey done by the Center of Disease Control, 40% of American teens show signs of fluoride overexposure, or dental fluorosis, and in some areas with high levels of fluoride the numbers can rise up to 80%. 1. Sub-Sub-point: Dental fluorosis is the first outward sign of fluoride poisoning. [Transition: So why are we taking all these risks just for our teeth and a little tooth decay, when topical use is all we need? ] III. Third main point: Water fluoridation in not what causes less tooth decay. A. Sub-point #1: It is now widely recognized that teeth benefit from fluoride topically. 1. Sub-Sub-point: We know now that fluoride provides little to no benefit being swallowed. 2. Sub-Sub-point: The benefit of fluoride comes from the topical contact to the teeth, like using toothpaste with fluoride in it. B. Sub-point #2: According to the World Health Organization, fluoridated countries do not have less tooth decay than non-fluoridated countries. 1. Sub-Sub-point: It is often claimed that fluoridated water is the reason the US has seen a decline in tooth decay in the past 60 years, however this same decline in tooth decay has occurred in all developed countries, most of which have never added any fluoride to there water. Therefore it can be concluded that fluoridation was not the driving force. 2. Sub-Sub-point: Instead, officials say this decline is due to improved ways of living, and using toothpaste with fluoride in it. 3. Sub-Sub-point: When water fluoridation first began there was no toothpaste that contained fluoride, now you nearly can’t find one without it . (Transition: If swallowing fluoride has no positive effects, and the toxin causes harm to crucial tissues why does the US continue to partake in such a widely spread dangerous activity.) Conclusion I. Summary statement: Fluoridation has been accepted for 50 plus years, this is why many today refuse to believe in the negative effects that this toxic fluoride causes with no real benefits. After extensive research it is unfortunately obvious that water fluoridation is an unsafe practice based on outdated and obsolete research. A. First main point: Fluoride, despite what some may think, is chemically a dangerous toxin. B. Second main point: Studies have shown fluoridation to have a variety of dangerous side effects damaging major tissues in the body. C. Third main point: Research has also shown that fluoridated countries are no better off then non-fluoridated countries. Due to the fact that the benefits of fluoride, reduction in tooth decay, happens topically no from ingestion (Doull 2009). II. Clincher: So next time you’re brushing your teeth, remember there’s a reason we spit it out in the sink and do not ingest it. All water sources, whether fresh or salt, have varying levels of fluoride (Awofeso, 2012). Around 1945 it was discovered that communities with higher rates of naturally occurring fluoride had lower rates of tooth decay (Dean, 1938) which resulted in the addition of artificial fluoride to public water supplies. The incidence of tooth decay fell drastically in fluoridated communities as a result, leading to widespread adoption of public water fluoridation as a public health strategy.

Fluoride is the only substance added to water that doesn’t affect the water itself but the person consuming the water- fluoride is a medical treatment. The same NHS website that boasts the marvellous pros of the UK’s fluoridation scheme also explicitly explains ‘Consent is required from a patient regardless of the intervention – from a physical examination to organ donation’ on a page regarding the legalities of medical consent. It is required by law that all patients must be aware and accepting of the treatment that they receive therefore feeding us a medicine (if it can even be called that) that we as society in many cases, know very little about is highly illegal and dangerous for everyone involved. Today doctors who give patients treatment without their consent face legal procedures and punishments so the fact that this practice goes on everyday under our noses with no repercussion is astonishing and shouldn’t happen just because the perpetrator (the government) is more powerful than a
Few object to the therapeutic use of fluoride to stop tooth decay, but fluoridation, the addition of fluoride to the public water supply, can spark avid controversy. Most dentists, medical groups, and government officials argue that fluoridation is a cheap and risk-free venture that doubles cavity prevention. In contrast, a small minority of dentists and conservative political groups argue that fluoride is a hazardous, poisonous substance that should not be consumed. Some antifluoridationists even claim that fluoridation is an untrustworthy form of socialized medicine. But rather than just attacking fluoridation as socialized medicine, opponents originally claimed that it was a conspiracy to poison or brainwash Americans through the water supply. This theory arose in the 1940s when the scientific community refused to endorse or reject fluoridation, thus allowing the debate to expand into the social sphere. While fluoridation opposition may be subconsciously inspired by naturalism, the social development of fluoridation into a Communist or fascist conspiracy resulted from a conscious effort by conservatives to suppress a growing government.
Fluoride is being overused in the United States and there needs to be a stop to it. With all the problems it is causing, the limit being used should be something everyone should worry about. Many think fluoride is good for you because it whitens your teeth, and dentist offer it every time you go there, but clearly it is not. Fluoride does help with a lot of things like mottling of teeth and whitening teeth, but health problems are occurring, and it needs to come to a stop. Department of Health and Human Services have recommended a level of 0.7 milligrams per liter as a optimal for fluoride in drinking water throughout the United States. (State of Washington) Clearly, they are using more than normal that is it starting to cause a lot of health problems. To finalize, fluoride is being overused in the US, and there needs to be a stop to
Topic: Addiction to social media General Purpose: To persuade Specific purpose: To persuade my audience that social media is hurting us mentally and our social lives. Thesis: Social media can cause serious problems to you and your health, so we need to put addiction to social media to rest. I. Introduction A. Attention-getter: The ages of 55 and 64 year olds who use social media fell “worried or uncomfortable” when they can’t access any type of social media accounts (Wright, 2015).
middle of paper ... ... s are dangerous and toxic. Despite the precaution taken in supplementing these chemicals into water, there still exists the probability that these hazardous chemicals will be reproduced by reactions with bodily fluids in areas where they may cause harm to the individual. The production of these chemicals is outlined in the previous section on Chemistry. Future and Conclusion Ultimately, water fluoridation is not a necessary treatment.
Fluoride is considered a drug by the Food and Drug Administration therefore a type of mediation which is why I made the claim of mass medication, which I believe is unethical to put in a public goods such as water. That is one of the reason other developed nations like Europe decided to stop this practice (FluorideAlert). Fluoride is already found in items such as toothpaste and other like items, putting it in the water just farther leads to over dosing the set limit of fluoride before the FDA declares it unsafe which is 2.4mg per liter of water (FluorideAlert). It can be clearly proven that this limits are surpassed daily for the average person and one sign is that more children are being affected by dental fluorosis, a condition that causes white or brown discoloration or spots on the enamel, or tooth surface that only occurs from to much fluoride and this should not be much of surprise if you include the fact that on top of water having anywhere from 0.7-1.4mg of fluoride, toothpaste is 94% fluoride, processed beverages also contain it, and many other products we would not think of like tea. While its just considered more of a cosmetic issue, it is also an indictor or red flag of over exposure on the rest of the
No study has been shown to require fluoride, it’s not an essential nutrient. There are many studies, however, that show that fluoride can interfere with important organs such as the kidney. Fluoride added to our waters would also add other toxics that we may not know about. “The CDC admits that 43% of fluoridation chemicals tested contain arsenic, 2% contain lead and 3% contain copper” (12 Reasons). How is that supposed to help our bodies or decrease tooth decay?
Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and Perfluoroisobutene (PFIB), are of the Perfluorinated compounds (PFC) family that refer to a class of organofluorine compounds that have all hydrogens replaced with fl...
People receive fluoride from many other sources besides water. Some food and beverages processed with fluoridated water are; dental products, tea, and coffee (Connett). No study has been shown to require fluoride, it’s not an essential nutrient. There are many studies however, that show that fluoride can interfere with important organs such as the kidney.
I was not very conscious about HFCS because I looked at it as just a byproduct of many foods. But analyzing the article with the Sociological Imagination made me realize the health aspects, the economic aspects, and the social aspects that can result from HFCS. Now that I am aware of the effects of HFCS, I will be more diligent when purchasing and consuming certain food products.
Fluoride is most commonly known as the ingredient in mouthwash that is used to clean your teeth and mouth. What a lot of people don’t know is what fluoride is and what its purpose and function really is for. This is really important because some people may not know that fluoride is apart of our every day lives and plays an extremely important role in the development of our teeth. The way that fluoride is apart of every day life is that it is naturally and purposely put into drinking water which in some cases is a surprisingly controversial topic for some people.
Due to its minute concentration found in drinking water, acute toxicity is extremely uncommon. Lethal doses have been defined as 5-15 mg/kg in children and 32-64 mg/kg in adults and are more common with additional oral fluoride supplementation, such as; toothpaste, mouth rinses, and varnish (Walker, CDC). Chronic toxicity is slightly more common, affecting multiple systems of the body (walker). Symptoms of the gastrointestinal system include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dysphagia, abdominal pain, neurologic system with headaches, tremors, titanic contractions, seizures, and cardiovascular system with widening of QRS, QTc prolongation, arrhythmias, and shock (Shin –
Fluoride in our drinking water serves a very important function for oral health. According to the American dental Association (ADA), more than 70 years of scientific research has consistently shown that an optimal level of fluoride in community water is safe and effective in preventing tooth decay by at least 25 percent in both children and adults. Fluoride prevents tooth decay and has been proven to prevent this common childhood disease. Protecting against cavities is the most beneficial way of preventing multiple types of oral disease. In my current county of El Paso Texas, The fluoridation of our drinking water exceeds the recommended levels so I started researching what U.S city was lacking to raise concern. I found that Portland,
