Volunteering at a children’s crisis treatment facility, volunteering with Special Olympics, coaching children’s sports teams for 10 years and working as a substitute education assistant has increased my understanding of childhood development. Grandmound Elementary School provides me with opportunities to strengthen my leadership and collaboration skills, through teaching art (as a volunteer) to the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade and serving as PTA president. I was able to implement many enriching opportunities for students in areas of art, science, and reading. I learned to work as a team, set targets, achieve goals, give and receive guidance. Participating in these activities has confirmed that working with families and particularly children are my purpose.
For our project, Maddie, Payal, Shraddha, and I decided to volunteer with a group called Angel Arms located in Latrobe. Angel Arms is an organization that takes care and helps rehabilitate babies who were born addicted to drugs. At first, we assumed we would be working with their snuggler program which would have allowed us to hold and comfort these babies. However, with the opioid epidemic on the rise, a place was needed for their work to continue. Although a long way out, Angel Arms is restoring an old abandoned Victorian house to turn it a rehabilitation place for these babies. Without that attachment and trust, neglected children are at risk and vulnerable to suffer consequences and risk physically, emotionally, psychologically, educationally, interpersonally that can have a damaging effect on the child’s life and development and can develop into PTSD. However, under certain circumstances, given an opportunity to attach to healthy adults in a positive way, children can overcome even brutal childhoods and injuries. Lastly, it shows how an adult or parent who is willing to attach, trust, help and work with a child, can radically change the course of that child’s life by acting as an advisor, detecting and solving problems, and being there even in the middle of conflict and eventually helping the child succeed in life.
According to my site coordinator, she stated that “The ideal social issue for the community service for the children would be more funding to actually implement a home like atmosphere. For many of these children, this is their second home.” She teaches them etiquette and manners because it is the most important factors when growing up. She also said that most of these kids joined the club since they were in kindergarten or first grade. Most have moved from the area, but they still come here to be at the club. A child and youth care professional can be described as a juxtaposition; an emotionally tough job with challenges, but incredibly rewarding and inspiring at the exact same time. Upon interviewing a child and youth care professional with 4 years of experience working in a group home, named Sarah Bakelaar at the Arrow Lodge in Edmonton, Alberta, on September 16th, 2015 at 3:30pm, it was evident that these workers require exceptional skills to help their clients. Arrow Lodge group home is an initiative through McMan Youth Family and Community Services Association throughout Alberta, serving the community by supporting individuals to reach their full potential. Mentors will not be limited to issues that are related to education, they will also aid students with problems that they are having within their personal lives as well. As with academic issues, the mentors’ doors will always open providing students with an outlet that they can rely on at anytime of the day or night. Students may reach out to mentors to discuss issues within their families, friend groups, or other personal conflicts. Our mentors will also have a mental health perspective as stated by the ASCA (American School Counselor Association), and like all professionals, our mentors provide students with confidentiality maintaining a sense of privacy between them.
