Attention Device: “How many people know the first car made was powered by electric?” According to Laurie Toupin (2014), the author of Electric Vehicles, “Thomas Davenport is credited with building the first practical EV in 1834, which was quickly followed by a two-passenger electric car in 1847, and then an electric car in 1851 that could go 20 mph (32 km/h).”(p.1492). As time passed by, gas powered cars brought more excitement to human, people start to stop developing electric vehicles until 1990. People start to switch their attention to electric cars again during the 1960s because of all the environmental problem and energy shortage.

First I am going to talk about the history of electric car.
Electric Vehicles are not new. In 1828, Anyos Jedlik invented the first electric motor. In 1834, Thomas Davenport built a similar model. In the following decades, inventors from Hungary to the Netherlands produced their own battery-powered, small scale electric vehicles.
According to Laurie Toupin (2014), the author of Electric Vehicles, “Thomas Davenport is credited with building the first practical EV in 1834, which was quickly followed by a two-passenger electric car in 1847,” (p.1492).
According to James Trefil (2015), the author of Electric Motor, “Anyos Jedlik (1800–1895) used one coil of wire on a rotating rotor and another coil as a stator, analogous to a rotor except that it stays put.” This is how use their idea to created a motor.
In 1834, Thomas Davenport built a battery-powered vehicle that ran on a train track. His device led the way for the world’s first electric locomotive just fifteen years

It appeared on the moon, the three lunar rovers electric vehicles left behind by Apollo astronauts. This electric vehicle bought up a vision to the big three car companies. The electric vehicle 1 created by automaker General Motors in 1996, but it didn’t work out because of the car so expensive and low mileages. By the twenty-first century, Toyota released their new model-Prius in 1997. Toyota prius is a hybrid electric car power by a small engine and an electric battery. As science and technology develop, the motor company of Tesla introduced the new model of model s in 2010. According to Thomas Riggs (2016), the author of Electric Car, “The all-electric luxury sports car runs entirely on a battery-powered electric drive system, can last up to 200 miles (322 kilometers) on one charge, and can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour (0 to 97 kilometers per hour) in 3.7 seconds.” (p.153). This successful electric car built by Tesla has proved that a new age of electric car is coming.
Now that I have talked about the history of electric cars by in just, I will now explain the idea of electric car and how they
By the early 1900’s, automobiles had become a common sight on the roads of the United States. Edison tried to create an electric battery that could power an electric car. Due to the abundant availability of gasoline, the electric car did not receive the response that Edison hoped for. However, the car battery was a huge success, and still plays a pivotal role in the automobile industry.
“Golf carts, which were originally created for golfers with disabilities, were introduced to the country in the 1940’s” (The History of the Golf Cart). During World War II, Merle Williams decided to experiment with electric carts, due to the rationing of gasoline at this time. His company, called Marketeer Company, had originally built “buggies” that were used by women when they went grocery shopping in order to aid them in carrying all of their groceries. “After the development of the “buggies” and some fine tuning, Marketeer created the first electric golf cart at its headquarters in Redlands, California. These first golf carts were powered by electrically charged batteries” (The History of Golf Carts). By the 1950’s, golf carts had caught onto the entire golfing community and some of the retirement communities. The first early electric golf cars were the first electric vehicles that people could buy allowing whole communities to embrace this.
Bicycles have been around since the early 1800s but the motorized bicycle was created in mid to late 1800s. The person credited with making the first motorized bicycle is Sylvester Howard Roper who made a steam engine not gasoline powered like today’s modern version of motorized bike (Licino). With new technology motorized bikes not only are limited to being built with engines but they are now built with electric motors. Motorized bikes named has changed over the years since its creation some call them motor assisted bikes, e-bikes and many other names but there are different types of motorized bikes in they all are under the category of a motorized bike.
The beginning of hybrid cars goes back to the 20th century. The Paris Exposition of 1900 included the Lohner-Porsche Elektromobil which is the first ever hybrid car. The inventor of the Lohner-Porsche Elektromobil was a 23 year old engineer named Ferdinand Porsche. Porsche is known today for his Volkswagen cars and for the famous sport cars designed by his son. He created a vehicle that could travel 38 miles on electricity alone. Porsche partnered with Jacob Lohner who wanted to develop motorcars that had incorporated coaches. The gas-powered cars at that time were very noisy and difficult to start. Porsche created battery-powered electric motors and put them in the front-wheel hubs to produce a front-wheel drive car. He also added an internal combustion gasoline engine so the batteries in the car could be charged. Sadly, the Lohner-Porsche could only reach up to 35 miles an hour. The idea of hybrid cars decreased during the years of growth in the modern automobile industry. This period brought a national highway system in the United States and gasoline was inexpensive. The concerns with auto emissions brought back the idea of hybrid cars. C. Russell Feldman, one of the founders of Motorola, decided to explore the possibilities of hybrid cars again. He contacted an electrical engineer named Victor Wouk to see if a hybrid car could work in society. Wouk found out that the batteries in the hybrid cars did not have the energy to produce a lot of speed and range. In the 1960’s, Wouk combined the low-emissions benefit of an electric car with the power and range of a gasoline engine to create a hybrid car. To make his hybrid car ideas real, Victor Wouk and his partner Charles Rosen formed the company called the Petro-E...
Batteries are the main source of energy for electric cars, it is what powers the electric motor in the car. The type of battery in the car can be determined by the company that made the car or which model the car is. The most common type of battery used is a lithium battery (Srinivasan 1). These lithium batteries are not performing well in cars because of the short battery life and the time it takes to recharge the battery. Srinivasan notes that “Li-ion is expected in HEVs in the very near future, use in PHEVs are expected to be more gradual and dependent on solving the life, safety, and cost challenges” (Srinivasan 2). HEVs stands for hybrid-electric vehicles and PHEVs stands for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. In other words Li-ion batteries will be the next type of battery that will be used in electric cars. The use of Li-ion batteries means better performance in the electric vehicle. These batteries are also safer than lithium batteries. Test are being performed with Li-ion batteries. Comparison between Li-ion and lithium batteries, which shows the differences and similarities (Srinivasan
An electric vehicle is an automobile that is propelled by one electric motor or more, using electrical energy stored in batteries or another energy storage device. Some electric vehicles run one hundred percent on electricity, while others (hybrid electric vehicles) run partly on electricity and partly on some other fuel such as gas or diesel. Using electric vehicles that run one hundred percent on electricity would reduce the total primary energy consumed for personal transportation. There are more than 150,000 electric vehicles companies all over the world who construct and sell all kinds of electric vehicles. When selecting a vehicle, electric vehicles are the wise choice.
In 2003, Tesla Motors was founded by a group of engineers who wanted to demonstrate how efficient electrics vehicles were compared to gasoline-powered vehicles. Tesla’s Mission Statement is “To Accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable transport.” Since the release of Tesla Roadster in 2008, they were able to sell more than 2,400 of these vehicles in more than thirty
In the 2003 Martin Eberhard, Marc Tarpenning, JB Straubel, Ian Wright, and most notably Elon Musk founded Tesla Motors. The “group of engineers in Silicon Valley wanted to prove that electric cars could be better than gasoline-powered cars” , and their efforts managed to disrupt the entire fabric of the automotive industry. The release of the Tesla Roadster, in 2008, was an innovative quake that introduced an alternative automotive technology for consumers to the widely accepted and well-established gasoline technology in the automotive industry. The Tesla Roadster was not only the first entirely electric sports car, but also “set a new standard for electric mobility” and luxury brand cars.
In recent years, there has been a popular trend towards more sustainable living. The shift towards the “green movement” has led many automakers, such as Mercedes and BMW to enter the electric
in the 1890's. Tesla is best known as the inventor of AC alectric power, radio (before Marconi),
In the Great Electric Car story, it talks about how the Electric Car was invented and how it was first used in the past. The Great Electric Car gives important history about how The Great Electric Cars are used and what made them one of the greatest cars ever invented in America today.
The electric motor is an innovative way of making a new greener way of developing and designing automobiles. Throughout history the first known electric car was built in 1837 by chemist Robert Davidson of Aberdeen. It was powered by galvanic cells also known as batteries. It weighed 6 tons and went approximately 4 miles per hour. It would travel a distance of 1 and a half miles before the batteries would die. This made the electric car very impractical and unreliable, people did not think it would become a factor in the automotive world.
Electric Vehicles have not yet reached a point where they are common technology. We are currently a nation that is centered around a devasting technology that has little benefit for the future. For the past century electric vehicles have remained out of the market due to a lock-in that the internal combustion engine created. Furthermore, in order for electric vehicles to be successful they must break this lock-in. For this to happen, changes have to occur within three different aspects: the national system of innovation in our country, the supply of technology and the demand for that technology.
Electric cars were recently introduced to the auto world. They are very fuel efficient while still having all the practicalities of a regular car. They are quiet and have zero emissions. They also are cheaper to maintain and cheaper to own then a gas powered car. Even though car enthusiasts dislike the idea of going fully electric, it is a very conscientious choice. Electric cars might seem like a useless form of transportation, but they offer features that help keep the Earth clean.
Stenquist explains electric cars might get their energy from coal, wind, nuclear, and solar sources; in addition, these capabilities which improve the environment by reducing the detrimental sources. Stenquist (2012) asserts that electric cars can better reduce the global warming emissions from the gases, which result in a cleaner environment (p. 2). Furthermore, the author interviews several people to
