How To Be A Persuasive Speaker
Don’t take our word for it - see why 10 million students trust us with their essay needs.
My persuasive speech was well-organized because having the outline formal helped with organizing. I enjoyed how each point flowed with each other and connected. My main ideas fit well with refutation because people have many opinions and views on pit bulls, so having be able to share my reasons and back them up with facts felt reasonable. Refutation fits well with the topic in general because people often assume straight away that pit bulls are vicious. It was nice to be able to give my main points that refute society’s perceptions of the breed. Before the speech, some of my audience members had negative views on pit bulls and felt scared around them. Other audience members loves pit bulls and agree that they make wonderful companions. I believe
I was successful to change their minds with the evidence I used. The reasoning followed greatly with the evidence to explain and show that anybody can own a pit bull, you just have to raise and train the dog correctly. I feel like I did change my audience’s views on pit bulls when I mentioned that drug dealers and gangs use them as guard dogs instead of taking care of them. I believe that I used good examples to support my topic. Logos helped with my thesis statement because when you first hear “Are Pit bulls a vicious breed?” many people would agree that yes they are and hearing stories of pit bull attacks would be there logical reason. Pathos is what helped me form the question because answering the question plays with the audience’s emotions about the dog. Using my examples and speaking about my main points connected with pathos. Lastly, ethos came in handy with my question as my thesis because my audience knows I own a pit bull and demonstrating trustworthiness, competence and concern. I think them knowing I own a pit bull, makes my audience feel more secure and connects with me. If I was able to deliver this speech again, I would be sure to move my notecards faster after each slide and express more emotions when speaking. I believe I did a fair job at delivering my speech and I felt more proud of this one than any of the others, so that’s why I wouldn’t change much. I enjoyed how my speech went and I did notice some mistakes, but overall I really liked it.
The misrepresentation of Pit Bull breeds in the media has been reflected in American culture. As these dogs were incorporated into World War I propaganda, they were perceived as symbols of courage and strength, the archetype of American dog breeds5. When, in the 1920s and 1930s, American Staffordshire Terrier “Pete the Pup” starred in the comedy Our Gang, later known as The Little Rascals, Pit Bulls were considered “nanny dogs” and family-friendly pets7. When the media focused heavily on illegal dog fighting rings and gang culture in the 1970s and 1980s, Pit Bulls were called demonic and unpredictable. Through their many roles, they have shown versatility and resilience, and lately they have suffered greatly.
Many people associate a negative connotation with the dog breed “pit bull.” These dogs are thought to be dangerous and problematic. However, much of this can be attributed to the mass amounts of negative media attention that pit bull breeds receive as opposed to other breeds of dogs that can be just as dangerous. For example, The National Canine Research Council did a four-day study on dog-bite repo...
Ladies and gentlemen of the Board, thankyou for allowing me to come and discuss with you the important message that is established in the Australian film Red Dog, directed by Kriv Stenders and why Australians should understand red dog, and why the board should display red dog at this year’s film festival.
Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience to help abolish puppy mills by adopting and volunteering. Those no matter how big or small their efforts are, that can make a difference and help cease puppy mills and their perpetuation in our society.
Perhaps the reason why pit bulls are feared by society is because we are afraid of what they are associated with. Pit bulls are often thought of as a gangster’s pet, a role in violent and illegal activities. People stereotype this breed because of the unfortunate acts of few. In contrast, society needs to understand that they are being racist towards a breed of dog. Denver’s systematic killing of pit bulls could be compared to the actions of the Nazis during the Holocaust.

One reason people are so frightened of pitbulls is for their roles in street gangs. They are often used as what law enforcement has begun to deem, Are all pit bulls subjected to the life of gangs or forced into a fighting ring? No, but it is the dogs that are and have become violent because of their mistreatment that get in the media which leads to the public fearing all pit bulls.
Currently, pit bulls have been reported by the media with very horrific and disturbing news of having attacked a child or being shot by a police due to aggression while some are reported to have been abused or neglected by its owners (Forderer and Unkelbach 534). And because the reports keep coming with heated discussions, more and more people have forged a frightening image of pit bulls even to the extreme of refusing to take care of such breed. Pit bull advocates claim that the dogs get a bad reputation considering that people should learn the dogs are not inherently aggressive. What the pit bull advocates would like to point is that the owners of the pit bulls should be considered guilty for mishandling of their own dogs. There are owners of pit bulls that even encourage the dog to be aggressive in order to fight and protect them in a wrong manner and wrong degree of training (Forderer and Unkelbach 536). Pit bull advocates claimed that a well socialized and well trained pit bull would be very intelligent and could be one of the gentle dogs imaginable.
Just the sight of a pit bull instills apprehension and even fear in some people, who believe the dog may attack them for no reason and not let go. Many communities have placed this ostracized breed under severe restrictions; some municipalities have implemented bans outlawing ownership of the breed. Today’s society regards the pit bull as the most vicious and unpredictable of all dog breeds, whereas admirers of the pit bull believe this misconception stems from irresponsible owners and the inflammatory and negative publicity concerning this breed.
GENERAL PURPOSE: To persuade the audience that pit bulls are nice loving dogs. SPECIFIC PURPOSE: To persuade the audience that pit bulls are not naturally dangerous. CENTRAL IDEA: Pit bulls are just like any other dog. It depends on how a pit bull or any other breed of dog is nurtured to determine the characteristics of the dog.
Pit Bulls are without a doubt my favorite dog, I adore them. Pit Bulls are very well tempered, loyal, and resilient animals. Bred for big game hunting, Pit Bulls are strong, fierce animals and people who have the wrong intentions for ownership should never own them. I am a strong believer that a potential pet owner should do lots of research before getting any type of animal, without exception. Owners should do as much research before getting a dog as they do in planning for a new home or any other new family member. One of the main things to really think about and understand is your intentions for your selection of an animal with the breeding of the Pit Bull. If you choose a dog with the wrong intentions, specifically a Pit Bull, you will get a dog that behaves aggressively and is dangerous. This owner behavior is what has caused the current plight of the Pit Bull today, where laws have been passed in thirteen states and hundreds of municipalities, as well as every U. S. Military base, banning the ownership of the breed and forcing shelters to euphonize Pit Bulls within 24 hours. These laws are unjust and cruel, and victimize the breed based on the owners’ behavior. I also argue that the blame for the epidemic proportions that the laws have reached is 100% the fault of owners who purposely acquired the Pit Bull with the intention to abuse and fight the dogs, and that these owners are the ones who should be punished, not the dogs. Everyone is entitled to have an oppion. Some people like cats when other people like dogs. Myself being a cat and a dog lover I see both sides of each animal. Therefor I believe that building a dog park in Muscatine, Iowa would be benifital to all becuse the dogs will be helthier, it will bring the community together, and dogs would be calmer.
She was asked multiple questions by Greta Schroeder, who is the owner of a pet care facility. Schroeder asked questions regarding the stereotypes of pit bulls, misconceptions, and what their owners are tired of hearing. According to My Pit bull Friend online article, The Stereotypes About Pit Bulls Nicole Arndt emphasizes that, “the biggest misconception about pit bulls is that they are inherently viscous… this is far from the truth. Typically pit bulls are sweet, loving, and gentle… Pit bull dogs have been taken out of the most horrendous of situations and go on to be family, therapy, service, agility, and even K9 unit working dogs.” Arndt then goes on to further explain that Pit bulls have an extremely high euthanization rate and communities should be to be blame for this. The media is still very harsh on pit bulls to date due to their stereotypes and people's misconceptions about them. Although shelters are trying their best to educate people on the real traits pit bulls contain it is not enough. Despite this, progress in clearing pit bulls of their bad reps is occurring, it may just be a while longer until their stereotypes are long
Have you ever had something you love then it had to get taken away? Have you ever received a gift and then have everyone you know avoids you because of your gift? What if your gift was a pit bull. What if Owners of pit bulls were avoided because of their pit bull. Pit bulls are intentionally over reported by the media. If the dog breed is unknown the media will often call it a pit bull! Owners love and trust their pit bulls. People should be allowed to keep pit bulls as pets.
Pit bull training does not differ a lot from training any other breed of dogs. And like other dogs who should be trained and shall undergo in different dog training methods, pit bull training is a necessity if you have one. It is our responsibility as an owner to teach our dog proper discipline to avoid him being all aggressive when around other people and dogs, thus keeping our very own dog well-mannered and harmless. Pit bulls in general are passionate and very loyal breed of dogs. Not only they have high level of intelligence but also if properly trained they can be a very good protectors for you and for your whole family.
