Turning on your light, making food in the oven, heating and cooling your house all require energy to work. Most likely you have something in your house powered by nuclear energy. Nuclear energy is reliable, sustainable, safe, and doesn’t affect the earth’s air quality. On the other hand, nuclear energy plants are costly, nuclear waste is detrimental to the environment if not taken care of properly, and again the plants can be dangerous as many people recollect on the major accidents at the Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, and Fukushima. The controversial issue of how safe nuclear energy is, is over speculated by news programs and novice nuclear energy protesters. There have been 33 disastrous power plant accidents that have occurred since 1952, in fact one of the most dreadful accidents recorded happened less than 250 miles away from my home town Warsaw, Virginia (Roger). On March 28, 1979, a power plant located in Middletown, Pennsylvania had experienced a failure in its mechanical system. The main feedwater pumps sending water to the steam generators to cool the reactor core malfunctioned. After this occurred a series of events happened and eventually water was escaping into the main core, when actions were taken, employees made conditions worse. Important pumps and instruments started to shut down eventually leading to the core to overheat and melt. There was a release of radioactive gases that were concerning and threating to the community, it was so radioactive that the governor of Pennsylvania, Richard Thornburgh advised pregnant women and pre-school-age children within a five-mile radius of the plant to leave the area. In cause of one malfunction, radioactive gas was released, public fear skyrocketed, the cost of repair and emergency responders was horrendous, scrutiny against employees and nuclear power plants, and heightened regulations. Three Mile Island was a three month old nuclear power plant located in southeast Pennsylvania. On March 28, 1979, a series of mechanical and human errors led to above-normal levels of radioactive gas being released into the air. Subsequently 400,000 gallons of water from a holding tank containing xenon-133 and xenon-135 was released into the Susquehanna River. (Davis 313) By the end of Thursday, March 29, detectable levels of increased radiation were measured over a four-county area. Plant officials estimated that 180 to 300 of the 36,000 fuel rods in the reactor had melted. (Davis 313) The governor advised that pregnant women and small children evacuate and stay at least five miles away from the facility. They did this for good reason because almost 80% of the gas escaped the morning of the accident (Davis 313). After the accident people filed more than 2,200 law suits. On March 28, 1979, at 4:00 A.M. Eastern time, the worst accident in commercial nuclear power history happened. It was a nice day in Dauphin county, Pennsylvania, and then it all happened. This accident was rated a 5 on a scale that only goes to 7. The scale is called International Nuclear Event Scale. It all started inside the secondary-system where the pilot-operated relief valve was stuck open releasing large amounts of nuclear reactor coolant. This horrific accident caused many scientists to worry about nuclear energy, as well as concerning scientists that it could be a danger to the world, so this caused many safety concerns among activists and the general public which resulted in in new regulations for the nuclear industry, and has been cited as a contributor to the decline of a new reactor construction program that was already underway in the 1970s. Even though this sounds like it should have caused many people to develop cancerous cells, epidemiological studies analyzing the rate of cancer in and around the area since the accident, determined there was a small statistically non-significant increase in the rate and thus no causal connection linking the accident with these cancers has been substantiated. Nuclear Crisis at Three Mile Island Abstract In March of 1979, just ten miles south of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the Nuclear Power Plant at Three Mile Island Unit 2 came close to nuclear melt down. Despite standards set by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the plant ran for several years prior to the accident under poor conditions. Communication certainly played a role in this near tragedy, as two engineers had foreseen the consequences, but their advice went unheeded. Although most of the economic and social impacts of this incident were minimal, this unpleasant event ended the nuclear power industry in America.

There are many sources of energy today, and the best source of it is constantly being sought after, one source stands out above the rest. Nuclear energy is simple in theory, yet it may be one of the most controversial sources of power. Nuclear energy works using reactors built to split the atoms (nuclear fission) of the fuel to produce heat. This heat evaporates the cooling agent (usually water) into steam which turns turbines to create electricity. Nuclear energy should be allowed, because it produces an abundance of electricity, as well as being a clean source of energy with no harmful emissions. Nuclear energy is the future of clean, environmentally friendly energy.
Nuclear power has no place in having a safe, clean, sustainable future. Today, the manufacturing of nuclear power plants has become a critical topic throughout the world that many strongly believe should be stopped. Nuclear Power is not safe anywhere in the world nor is it environmentally friendly. Nuclear power plants are truly something that could cause mass destruction in the world and has the potential to wipe out a whole country with ease. Despite proponents’ that claim that nuclear power is safe, there is a history that proves otherwise and marks a number of disasters caused by nuclear power plants.
Central Idea: Nuclear energy only contributes a small amount to the world’s electricity yet it has hazards and dangers that far out-way its benefits. There are many other alternative power producing sources that can produce energy more efficiently and more safely than nuclear power plants can.
On April 26, 1986, a reactor in the nuclear power plant in Chernobyl, Ukraine exploded and released 126 different types of radiation into the atmosphere. On April 25, the reactor which later exploded was shut down for maintenance. At the same time, machine operators were planning a test on the nuclear turbines located in the power plant. During this test, the operators turned off several safety systems which led to this major disaster. While testing the reactor, the power was increased, water flow into steam drums decreased, and the power rapidly increased. Because the emergency and safety systems were turned off, the reactor exploded and caused a horrible problem to deal with.
Duke energy claims that their nuclear power plants are safe, but if an accident does happen, such as in the case of the Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, and Fukushima Daiichi plants, harmful radiation may be released. One dangerous accident that can happen to a plant is a meltdown. A meltdown occurs when the nuclear reactor overheats as a result of a failed cooling system. The increased temperatures cause the core of the nuclear reactor or the fuel to melt, possibly causing explosions that disperse radiation.
