Persuasive Speech On Euthanasia

Good morning Dr Sullivan and class. Today I will be talking to you about Euthanasia.
Euthanasia, or voluntary assisted suicide, has become a huge debate in not only Australia, but across the world. The moral, legal, philosophical, human right and religious reasons behind Euthanasia have been the major talking points. Euthanasia is the choice of an individual to take part in assisted suicide when suffering, legally. There have been many attempts to legalise euthanasia in Australia but at this current time, it remains against the law.
On the 25th of May 1995, the Northern Territory of Australia became the first place in the world to pass right to die legislation. The Rights of the Terminally Ill Act lasted nine months before being overturned by the Australian Federal Parliament. Today, Voluntary Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide are illegal in all states and territories of Australia. Although Euthanasia is illegal in Australia, there are some parts of the world where it is legal to assist another with suicide. In Switzerland, deadly drugs may be prescribed to a Swiss person or to a foreigner, where the recipient takes an active role in the drug administration. This means that anyone could go to Switzerland and take part in Euthanasia. Although in the United States majority of the country have banned Euthanasia, there are still some states where it is legal but you need to be from that state. These states include Oregon, Washington and Montana. The other countries where assisted suicide is legal to their own citizens are the Netherlands, Japan, Germany, Colombia, Albania and just a few weeks ago Belgium has completely taken off the age requirement for euthanasia meaning children can now die at will.

...keeping people alive costs a lot of money, which could be used to save other people's lives. Although I am reading out these arguments for the cause, I still believe that Euthanasia is wrong.
The reasons against Euthanasia would include that many pain killing drugs can now help a patient die with dignity, except a dying patient may not be able to make a rational decision. A patient may have said they want euthanasia when they were nowhere near death; however, when faced with death they may change their mind but be incapable of telling anyone, it is known that many people recover after being “written off” by doctors.” Also people might have been pushed into saying they want euthanasia by relatives who do not want to look after them. These are some strong arguments against euthanasia and this is why it is such a heavy topic all over the world. Thank-you for listening.
