The NFL need to improve their safety on players that play in the NFL. Also for the men that play in the NFL and take all them hits they deserve more money then what they get. Most players in the NFL catch brain disease once they leave the NFL. Also most NFL players go broke when they retire out the NFL. NFL players get on drugs while they in the NFL which hurts them when they retire. The NFL has bad effects on the players of the game during and after there career. The NFL has a lot of bad effects on players after there career including Concussions, Injuries, and Deaths. Former linebacker George Koonce Felt disillusion after his 10 year career ended in 2003. He later crashed his car on a fail suicidal attempt. His mind was so messed up after …show more content…
his career that he wanted to just commit suicide. 87 out 91 of former NFL players were tested positive for brain disease. Brain disease really causes NFL players to commit suicide. Robinson a Former NFL player that committed suicide was found to have several concussions during his time in the NFL. Boomer Esiason said, “ It is really hard to put into words just how violent and how intense those hits are.” The hits causes the concussion and the pain for the players. When player have brain disease it makes them do things they normally will not do. There are former NFL players that don’t even know they have brain disease which is worst because they are more destine to do things they wouldn’t do because they are not on medication. Also the NFL put bad effects on players by giving them all kinds of medication that they get addicted to. 40 percent of NFL players misuse drugs medication. Football players use pain pills to get rid of pain for a amount of time and when the pill wear off they keep using it and end up getting addicted to the pill because it takes away the pain. The football players use the pill for so long that when they try to get off the pill all the pain comes back and they body can’t adjust to the pain it because they bodies are immune to the pill. Calvin Johnson says “Painkillers were handed out like candy to NFL players.” It is easy to get painkillers in the NFL and also easy to get addicted to them. Pain killers are the number 1 drug abused by NFL players. Players in the NFL get on alcohol because all the hits and injuries they take they start drinking alcohol. It is so easy for players in the NFL to go bankrupted. The NFL is the 7th highest paid sport and the NFL takes more hits then any other sport. Also the NFL has more injuries then any other sport, so the NFL should be the highest paid compared to all they have to endure throughout they whole career. “78 percent of NFL players go bankrupted 2 years after retirement.”(Chadiha) The NFL football players have a lack of competent financial planning advice which mean they do not have the proper training to plan there financial life when they make it to the NFL. NFL players when they are first drafted are no different then the average college student they not trained to supply there money and learn how to use it. The NFL do not get players ready for life after retirement. There are NFL players that do not know what to do with there life because all they know is football and nothing else. “85 percent of NFL players said they did not believe the NFL prepared them for the transition to life after football”. (LaMonica) The NFL does not teach no life lesson for players that play the game of football. All the NFL teaches is violence and hard hits your body takes. Lincoln Kennedy said “ I know more and more guys that are just lost, but guys are scared to try to get evaluated because they can’t afford it” The NFL have so many players that are lost and don’t know what to do. That would be the worst feeling in the world to have not knowing what to do with the rest of your life because all you knew your whole life is football. When former NFL players retire they are really useless and also helpless and they need people after retirement to get them back on the right track. The NFL is uneducated and doesn’t supply players with a back up plan.
When players leave out of college and go to the NFL they leave without a college degree. If a player gets hurt in the NFL and they career is over at the beginning of there career they got nothing to lean on because they don’t have a college degree. If they want to go back to college they would have to pay all the money again and start all over as a freshman in college again. The NFL should make players stay until they senior year of college just in case they get hurt they still have a college degree and a back up plan. If a player gets injury and they career is over that mean they wasted 3 years of they college career that they can never get back and will have to start all over. All players should be given a contracts that says when there football career is over the NFL will pay for them to go back to college and get there education if they didn’t already receive there education before going to the …show more content…
NFL. The NFL do not care what type of injuries you have and hoping you to get better they just want the players for the time being.
If a player is hurt they will do whatever they can to do to keep that player playing if he’s a good player. That is how good players careers get crushed because they keep playing even through they have a serious injury and when they take a strong hit they career will be over in the matter of seconds. When players get hurt they should be taken to the hospital and looked at seriously before going back on the field even if the injury looks small it could be big. The NFL do not do a good job at taking injuries very seriously because most of the time the NFL just give the player pain pills so the pain can leave the body for a while and come back. That is also how they get addicted to the pain pills. Also a lot of players have to go through a pain called chronic pain. Chronic pain is a pain that last more then 12 weeks. That is like 3 month of pain. Players have to go through that just because they didn’t take care of the problem at the beginning. If the NFL would take injuries serious and not rush players to come back there would be no need for NFL players to even take the pill because the doctor would be getting the injury straighten out. The NFL would be better if they would take injuries more seriously instead of focusing just on playing the game of football. Safety should always be first when it come to
football. The NFL does not get players ready for life after football. Players have said they are just 40 years old and have the energy of a 90 year old man. The transition for players after retirement is one of the hardest things for them to do they do not know what to do with there life and they have no energy to really do anything because of the NFL. When players leave the NFL they usually have anxiety attacks and go through a lot of depression. Player in the NFL have depression and anxiety attacks because they have no clue what to do with there life anymore. The NFL should have retirement programs for those who do not know what to do after retirement or the players that are just lost to get them back on track.
America’s newfound favorite pastime, football, came from a bizarre chain of events. Football started when a soccer player got fed up with just kicking the ball, so he picked up the ball and ran to the goal. His actions of picking up the ball and running with it fathered a new European sport, rugby, which was soon brought over to American shores, and was altered slightly, the shape of the ball and a few other small rules. The sport became organized into a league and produced the NFL(National Football League). The NFL had a slow beginning, but has picked up popularity, currently having a 9 billion dollar yearly revenue. Playing football comes with great costs, including physical and mental health deterioration, plus the amount of time spent prepping before game day. Which can pose several questions, “Why suffer for a game, Is it worth the money? Is it worth the fame? How great is the cost?” I believe that football, should have stricter regulations for the treatment of injuries, along with informing players of just how devastating a concussion can be, along with the other major injuries that commonly occur while playing football.
This was meant to discourage gamblers from getting close to players for the sole purpose of gaining inside information. This decision ultimately protected the players from getting involved in gambling, but also added new issues. There are many inaccuracies found in the NFL injury report. By letting the public know which players are hurt and where they are hurt, opposing teams are using this to their advantage. As predicted, coaches are going to try to obscure their player’s health to mess with their opponents game plan, while at the same time still following the guidelines of the NFL injury report regulations....
The average NFL player takes up to 1,000 blows to the head throughout their football career. Some of those blows can have the force of a sledgehammer (“RealNatural”). Based on a research study by Dr. Jesse David, there were 265 concussions reported in the 2012 season, during the 2011 season there were 266 concussions, and 270 concussions in 2010 season (Kacsmar). It has been known that repeated blows to the head can cause long-term brain damage since at least the 1950’s, long before most of the NFL players had begun their careers (“RealNatural”). Past infractions of the NFL have already resulted in over 4,500 forme...
them and put policies in place to help prevent injuries such as concussions. The NFL should not
Playing football comes with several risks factors that players’ acknowledge prior to playing the game starting a young age. Regardless, these players still chose to play the game, which they end up loving and cherishing despite all the risks accompanied with it. Football is one of the toughest sports in the world; it takes a certain amount of strength, speed, and aggressiveness to play 48 minutes of hard-nosed football. However, the National Football League (NFL) is in the midst of a controversial issue. Is the NFL getting soft? This has been a debatable issue for several years. While some believe that implementing all these rules in the NFL is progressively turning the game soft, others say that the NFL is not getting soft; it is just trying to make the game safer for its players.
Looking at the severity of injuries in the NFL in this day and age, and then looking at what the NFL does to protect players, the NFL is a business. Everything is politics. It has turned into who has the best stadium rather than who has the best players. The NFL is all about who has the best fans, not who has the best coach. The better fans you have, the more money you make, but the better coach you get, the more money you have to pay him. Growing up as a fan of the NFL, it saddens me to see the decline of the sport I love so much, but it is nearly inevitable. Soon enough, everyone in the NFL will be injured, and football will be over. The way things are going, players are dropping faster than we are gaining them. We only draft new players into the league once a...
American football in the past several years have really developed, not only from the fans perspective but also from the players and the official heads. Safety is the most important topic talked about in all sports but it is a must in football, especially because of the way the game is played with all of the tackles and hits. It is really important not only for the players to be safe but also the officials to keep it safe. Both players and officials play a key role in making the game of football safe and interesting to watch for the fans and a great experience for the players as well. As said in the Denver Post, players are expected to play with the rules…coaches are expected to teach…and game officials to emphasize the rules. The game of football, in the NFL, is safer than it has ever been because of the rules, penalties and the equipment.
The average NFL (National Football League) career is only 3 years because of injury. Players are constantly retiring early because of injury that is not allowing them to play to the best of their abilities or even to play the game at all. Some of these injuries have even made it difficult for athletes to have normal lives mentally, physically and financially.
College athletes should not be paid it will ruin college sports forever. Some people believe that college athletes should be paid by the school because of all of the hard work they put in however they shouldn’t be paid because there is no fair way to pay every college athlete. There are many reasons that college athletes shouldn’t be paid one of the main reasons is that colleges don’t have enough money, the second reason is that they already get money in the form of scholarships, and there is no fair way to pay each college athlete.
The brute force of the game is what draws millions of people around to the world to come and watch. However, what millions of Americans don't see if the consequences of what makes the game how great it is today, the hits. With players getting bigger faster and stronger it only leaves players in more danger of getting injured. Concussions are one of the most common injuries among NFL players mainly because of the constant contact, and how the design of the helmet is to protect against major head injuries, not concussions. CTE is common in many NFL players, and most former NFL players. A study by the national institute for Occupational safety and health found that, “the brain tissue of 59 of 62 deceased former NFL players tested positive for CTE” also when studying, “the causes of death of 3,439 former NFL players concluded they were three times as likely as the general population to die from degenerative brain diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's”(Karaim). However there has been remarkable facts on how CTE has been found in NFL players more commonly than any other sport the NFL refuses to acknowledge that there is any correlation between player who played professional football and CTE. Because of this direct correlation of football and CTE many players are unable to work of fully function after their career as a professional
Many memories are made in football, but sadly some of the greatest players cannot recall them. The National Football League has been associated with concussions and brain traumas throughout the years, but lately it has been exposed by media and NFL veterans. The league recently “reached a $765 million preliminary settlement with thousands of former players who were suing the league over its treatment of concussions…” (Waldron). Many former players are experiencing the effects of taking hard hits over and over again; they were not properly treated, which makes the injury worse and long term. The concussion issue in the NFL is more prevalent today, because it affects not only the players, but the league as a whole.
II. Summary: Players’ safety should be focused on more by making rules stricter in the NFL, teaching younger players how to tackle, and increasing the rules because helmets do not always prevent concussions.
Present players in the National Football League disagree with all the protective rules now but when they are no longer playing football it’ll be a different story. Players also tend to forget that they won 't be playing football forever and that they will need to be healthy later on in life when they can no longer play football. It’s not okay for players to complain about the safety rules now, and then later claim the National Football
There has been an extensive debate over the years about college athletes being paid and I honestly don’t see why there is a debate about it at all. The NCAA has strict rules about players receiving benefits from the school in forms of helping players and their families in the form of paychecks or even helping pay bills. College sports bring in an enormous amount of money for the schools every year and are expected to be given nothing in return. Sports do not only bring in money to schools but also more students and fans. The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) have taken several players’ records and rewards from them for the simple fact of getting benefits from the school and that is just not acceptable (Allen 115). Athletes are just like every other student in the way of having to pay for housing, food, bills, and more. Having to balance school and sports gives athletes no time to have jobs which means they do not have a way to bring in money to pay for the essentials of going to
College sports have become more popular throughout the past few years and the NCAA is doing an immense amount of money. This increase in money has caused colleges to become involved in this global debate over whether college athletes should be paid or not. Many athletes believe they should be paid for all their hard work, time, and dedication to the organization. Other people like, Kristi Dosh, believe that college athletes shouldn’t be paid because there are too many questions that haven’t been answered for them to join the opposing side. A lot of questions come up with this debate, like which athletes are going to get paid? Kristi Dosh is an author and an ESPN sports business reporter. Dosh wrote the essay, “The Problems with Paying College Athletes”, on June 9, 2011. This essay was published in Forbes which is a business magazine about sports and money. Kristi Dosh makes a somewhat convincing argument by asking a lot of questions to get her audience to realize how difficult this change is, however; she doesn’t do a very good job giving any citations or statistics to back up her statements. Ultimately, I think Dosh is convincing to her audience, but the weaknesses outweigh the strengths.
