To start, one of the most obvious reasons people buy junk food is that it is so convenient. If you travel the length of the Post Road in Orange alone you will pass countless drive thrus and other fast food joints. Starting from the milford border, near the mall, you can see Mcdonald 's, Sonic, Hometown buffet, Dunkin donuts, and Chipotle, all without even moving your feet. If you take the short drive, about a minute, you will also see Boston Market, Taco Bell, and Subway, who contrary to public belief is not as healthy as you might think. For some people, cooking a home cooked meal every night for the family is easy, however for others not so much. The latter would be those who are in the middle class according to Beth Hoffman who writes for Forbes. While most of us tend to believe that people living below the poverty line are more likely to become obese, it is actually “middle income people are the most overweight and eat fast food more regularly than anyone else. In contrast, 80 percent of those with low incomes cook at home at least five times a week”(Hoffman). The reason for this is simple, middle class families have enough money to go out to eat for cheap meals like fast food or low end restaurants that often times serve fatty, salty, and sugary foods a few times a week. According to the American Heart Assocation men should eat about 37 grams of sugar a day and woman should eat about 25. (Gunnars). The problem is that many processed foods have incredibly high amounts of sugar. In one Nature Valley granola bar there is 12 grams of sugar, 48 percent of the daily intake for woman, and this is marketed as a healthy snack. Some junk foods like cookies and sodas can have up over 100 percent of daily sugar in it. Since humans naturally desire sugar, and junk food provides a quick and plentiful source it is easy to see why it is so abundantly

After taking a closer look at the American diet, it 's clear to see Americans are in a lot of trouble. The average American diet is filled with lots of greasy fast food, large cuts of meat, salty junk food and sugar-laden sodas. This tradition is then passed on to the children and creates a legacy of ailments, disease and a lower quality of life. To many people, plant-based eating sounds like a death sentence. In reality, it 's all about getting creative with the foods you already like. It also involves intentional meal-planning and organization. However, your health is worth it. The ability to experience a better quality of life should be motivation enough to start changing your eating habits. Consider a few of these simple ways to incorporate plant-based eating into each meal without eliminating delicious taste.
Most of the time when we think about fast food restaurants, we think how delicious they are yet unhealthy at the same time. We blame fast food restaurants for the causes of obesity as well as diabetes. “Don’t Blame the Eater” by David Zinczenko, talks about how his entire childhood he was obese. He mentions how he was just an average kid trying to make a living out of everything he had. Zinczenko mentions how easy, cheap and delicious was to buy junk food, but when it comes to going back into the healthy eating pattern; it was almost impossible. There are so many dieting solutions out there and one of the most popular are the fad diets. Dieting should be about getting healthy and losing weight in a healthy way. Fad diets however, are about losing a lot of weight in a disproportionally short amount of time. Due to the loss of weight that the dieter wanted, when they reach their goal weight, they stop doing the fad diet and go back to their regular diet. This causes the weight that they shed to be put back on again in a disproportionally short amount of time, which is also just as unhealthy. This cycle of losing and gaining weight is only one of the many dangers of fad diets.

You know I never thought of grocery shopping as being a challenge or a skill until I had a house of my own and a family to care for. Today's grocery shopping trips in the Lambert household include my three children ages seven, four, and two tagging along. Wanting anything and everything. I use to enjoy grocery shopping and now it takes so much planning, memorization, and legit skill to get in and out within my set budget, and with getting everything on my list. Eating Responsibly To eat responsibly means to know what you are eating and knowing what you are putting into your body, whether it is healthy for you or not. It’s a sad fact that the typical American diet (high in meat and processed foods) is not healthy. There are a lot of different ways to stay healthy, but it can also be very difficult to follow a good diet plan all the time. I know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and I have tried to eat well before all of my classes. I include the necessary protein of eggs and sausage, and include a fruit of some kind.
Healthy and affordable food choices on the go or even just in the store is a huge and worldwide ongoing problem that of course cannot be fixed overnight. To help start and put one foot forward to improvements in the availability of healthy food options and choices in lower income neighborhoods, we as a community and a whole should do the following.

People need to get in habits to cook at home rather than eating out everyday for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. People in this world are now always trying to look for the easy way out of things. Eating out at a fast food restaurant is not a healthy meal to eat. We the people need to avoid the fast food restaurants and stop being lazy and have home cooked meals everyday.
