“I will do later.” “There is plenty of time to do it.” “Just one more episode (video, game, chapter…)” Do any of these sound familiar to you? It should if you are a procrastinator at heart or procrastinating now. Procrastination. It is a natural part of life; everyone does it at least a few times in his or her life. In fact, according to a study conducted by the American Psychological Association, about 80 to 95 percent of college students procrastinate on their schoolwork (Hubbard). Putting off and avoiding doing a task is a bad habit to have but people still do it. The causes for procrastination is different for everybody and it is not always the same cause for each task and time.

So why do people procrastinate? As I mentioned earlier, there is not just one main cause of this habit or process. The reasons why vary from person to person, but there are some common causes for many people. The first cause would be the fear of failure. Nobody likes failing at something and the consequences for failure can be severe in some cases and situations. A person would think that later on they would have more time or the perfect opportunity to do the task. However, the way that they think they feel is very different in how they will actually feel later on. One think they will be motivated and energized to do the task but in reality, they will be tired, worn out and unmotivated in the future. It is amusing and ironic how the stage a person is in now does not change in the future if they do not do anything. This scenario is the dynamic inconsistency, where “the decision maker's preferences vary over time, and their preferences become inconsistent” (“8 Causes of Procrastination”). The inconsistency happens when each preference made by the person at certain parts in time do not match
