There are over 47 million Americans who are uninsured; unreasonably they are African-Americans, Hispanics and the working poor. Those who are uninsured lack access to ready care, resulting in unnecessary deaths, increases morbidity among the acutely and chronically ill and results in higher cost. I think everyone can agree that all Americans should have a wide range of choices for affordable health insurance coverage and Congress needs to address these problems. As you continue to debate the details of healthcare legislation, I encourage you to consider the following. First, I urge Congress to support a health care system in which risks, costs and responsibility are shared by all. Secondly, Congress can eliminate financial and health status barriers to health care access. The weakest and most vulnerable members of our society are not receiving the care they require because they simply cannot afford it or find the right care they need. Health care for all would provide basic, affordable health care for everyone. Our country would also benefit from strengthening public health systems in order to help create health communities. To improve the nation’s overall health, increasing access to health care must go hand in hand with improving public health and reducing poverty. Public health implementation will help eliminate unhealthy environmental factors, provide education and incentives for healthy life-style choices and inform the public about the effectiveness and efficiency of health care measures. Medicaid currently provides health coverage for more than 50 million Americans, this includes children and adults in low-income families, the disabled, and the elderly. Although having this option available, many people do not qualify for coverage and many state programs do not cover the needed services. Thus, our nation should support and
