The Admiration of Pet Rescues
The opportunity to volunteer at Roseville for “Recycled Pets Norcal” pet rescue allowed me to gain more knowledge about dogs and experience the work when handling homeless pets. The pet rescue mostly consists of dogs and some cats and I realized that volunteering our time to these precious dogs help sustain our personality to become more caring and responsible people. The volunteers range from elementary school kids to mature adults and this enabled me to work with people I didn’t know and helped expand on my communication skills. There was this time when my partner and I met up at Pet Food Express to help out for an adoption event and I noticed that our volunteer advisor, Mrs. Hendon, brought in new and different

Some may even be violent to their pets. Animal abuse has played a major role for the cause of dogs or cats to feel neglected, leading to death. For instance, “From 1980 to 1984, the MSPCA investigated 17,480 complaints of abuse and neglect. From 1985 to 1989, the number of cases jumped to 20,698, or a 12.7% increase over the prior five-year period (Arluke, Arnold, and Luke).” This type of abuse is illegal because the United States and British Columbia has a law of prohibiting animal cruelty, however, statistics show that cases of animal abuse keep increasing each year. Examples of animal abuse include dog fighting, dog shock collars, animal experimentation, puppy mills, and plenty more. Some pet owners have no affection or kindness, and for no good reason, torture innocent animals. Therefore, these precious pets end up in animal shelters or pet rescues. According to the Animal Studies Repository article, it states, “Additional social problems with free roaming dogs …show more content…
Pets are very common in households or families in the United States and British Columbia. “Over recent decades, companion animals have become increasingly important in the lives of Americans, More than 63% of U.S. households, and over 75% with children, currently have at least one pet. (Walsh, 465).” These statistics show that pets are present in a household or family’s life. It is useful to have pets around children because they teach them responsibility and help enhance their knowledge. For instance, a family owns a dog and their children may leave their favorite pairs of shoes in the middle of a room. The dog may not be trained yet and ends up chewing on the children’s’ shoes. This teaches them a lesson to be more responsible with their belongings and to put it away after using it. Furthermore, dogs are able to provide protection towards families and homes. They are able to sense when a person is approaching a door, causing potential thieves to run or stay away from a barking dog. In addition, The Waltham Book of Human- Animal Interaction states, “In one study, elderly women aged 65-75 years who had a better relationship with their pets were more likely to be closely attached to their spouses and to be happy (Hart, 21).” It is even proven that elderly woman obtain a pleasant life when having pets around them and help build a stronger relationship with their marriage
Several studies have examined the effects of dog ownership on people's physical and mental health. Dog ownership produces considerable health benefit and provides social support that encourages dog owners to walk (Cutt et al.2007 ). Pet owners appear to have lower systolic blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels(Anderson et al 1992). Pet owners with serious mental illness living in the community demonstrate higher social community integration(Zimalog and Krupa 2009). Socially excluded participants who performed in the presence of a dog report higher mental well-being compared with socially excluded participants who did not work in the presence of a dog (Nilüfer et al 2012). Although there is evidence suggesting that dog ownership can improve people's physical and mental health, there is little research documenting the psychological and behavioral effects of dog-assisted therapy, especially on elderly patients with dementia, who have dif...
Research has been done in the area of human-animal companionship and security, and stress management. Due to the relative newness of this field and the difficulties in studying it, most research has been concentrated on the elderly, specifically, institutionalized elderly. Pets have been introduced into these settings in order to minimize the negative consequences of institutionalization. Most research has been conducted on the extreme ends of the continuum, either very brief visitation or therapy of resident pets studies (Wrinkler 216).
“There can be many reason for animal cruelty, like any other form of violence, is often committed by a person who feels powerless, unnoticed, or under control of others. Some who are cruel to animals copy acts what they have seen or that have been done to them, others see harming an animal as a safe way to get revenge against--or threaten-- someone who cares about that animal”. (“Animal… Statistics”) Concerns towards abusing animals have gone up in the past. Although there are not many cases on animal abuse, many have occurred. Abusers are charged with Criminal Animal Abuse and then sentenced to life in prison. Some animals that are physically abused are sometimes rescued by Animal Control, and are taken it to an animal shelter. However, many shelters have not had the space to keep the animals so the workers would have to put them down (Carol Roach). Researchers have shown that the main animals getting abused are dogs, chickens, horses, and livestock (“Animal...
You wake up in the hospital, look around, and find a doctor hovering nearby declaring that you have just suffered through a heart attack; affirming that if not for your dog, you would have died. You remember back to earlier that day: sitting on the couch, feeling a little off, hearing your dog barking, sensing him nudging you, going to the phone to call the ambulance, and having your dog by your side until you were safe inside the aluminum walls of the emergency vehicle. Although it sounds abnormal that a dog would be the one to save someone’s life, situations similar to the one above are not uncommon. Dogs and other household pets have been shown to be able to detect medical emergencies, including heart attacks and seizures, in their owners.
Do you know that if you buy a pet from a pet store, there will be some animals die in the shelters? Do you also know that every year there are thousands of sheltered animals are euthanized—mercy killing— because there is no space for them? Many people buy pets rather than adopt from shelters because they think they are healthy, purebred and well-behaved. But actually the sheltered animals may be healthier, happier and much cheaper. In the recent years, more and more people decide to adopt animals since there are numerous advantages such as changing a homeless animal’s whole life, reducing illegal trade and puppy farms and benefiting from long- term advice and support.
The prevalence of pet ownership in America has more than tripled during the last several decades, rising from 67 million households during the 1970s to 164 million households in 2012 (Human Society, 2014). The conscious decision by 62 percent of American households to own at least one pet represents a long-term commitment of time, money, and dedication to the needs of a wholly dependent entity. The basic needs for all pets, inclusive of companion animals and farm animals, include several provisions. These provisions include access to safe, clean drinking water at all times, access to high quality food commensurate to the weight of the animal, and adequate shelter from excesses of heat and cold (Agape, 2014). Beyond the life-essential basic needs of animals lay commonly accepted requisites that define responsible pet ownership. These requisites or minimal standards of care include access to veterinary care, access to exercise, and freedom from physical harm.
Every 60 seconds an animal is abused. Dogs, cats, horses, and many other types of animals are being neglected and tortured everyday, yet resulting in few and minor consequences for the perpetrators. Animal abuse is prevalent in the United States and has been an ongoing issue since the 1970's, and prior to. Society as a whole has chosen to avoid the facts and arguments about animal cruelty, because to some it is seen as acceptable and typical. It becomes much more frowned upon when people actually see the results of the cruelty, especially in the media.
The abuse that animals endure at human hands is heartbreaking, sickening, and infuriating. Animals are just as delicate as humans, so why not abuse us too? Animal lives should be just important as ours. No animals should be killed or abused for testing, entertaining, clothing, or hoarding. Every year, millions of animals are being killed and torture for testing.
“A dog is a man’s best friend” goes much deeper than the phrase might initially imply. Recently many medical journals have begun to identify with the many and varied benefits of pet ownership. Men have always relied upon animals for work, transportation, and survival. As times have changed, man has begun to appreciate a different bond with animals. Gone are the days of animals running free outside around the homestead, for now animals are allowed inside and are considered by many to be an integral part of our daily lives! Medical studies have found that animals have a much greater intelligence level than originally thought. Through proper training and experience, animals are not only household pets, but also are becoming an accepted form of medical treatment.
Many people believe that the only way to get a pet is to “buy” one without considering adopting, which is why I believe people should consider looking up better options and become more knowledgeable. There are so many reasons why someone shouldn’t buy a pet from a breeder, and so many benefits from adopting a pet from your local shelter/animal rescue.
For animal welfare and the causes of animal abuse new research has been created. Since animal abuse is fairly a new subject, new research is constantly brought up. In the Bahamas a study was done in the College of Bahamas, and it states that, “…dogs were equally likely to be considered members of the household in homes without domestic violence,” (Fielding 197). Homes with violence show that humans substitute human victims for animal victims. Animal rights activists are trying to break down symbolic boundaries betw...
One of the animals that people allow to suffer in the U.S. is dogs. Currently 36 states either allow or mandate that animal shelters be willing to release unwanted animals to laboratories for testing, and about 80% of the experiments performed on these animals are funded by citizen tax dollars. Communities that have actually done away with pound seizures have actually shown that their pet shelters are able to place more pets in homes as well as having to euthanize fewer animals because of the increased confidence in the shelter. Some ways to help prevent this from happening to your pets are: Don’t let your pet run around unsupervised, keep an ID on your pets so that you can find them faster if they become lost, and to make provisions in your will for your pets to keep them from falling into poor conditions. Another side to the abuse of dogs is the use of puppy mills. These are buildings where puppies are bred to be sold in pet shops, but have to live in poor conditions before being sold. These dogs are housed in cramped and unsanitary cages, and have to deal ...
When you adopt an animal from a rescue organization, you are actually saving two lives: the animal you adopt and the one taking his place. Adopting an animal from a shelter could save him from euthanasia and frees up shelter space for more animals. According to the ASPCA, roughly 1.5 million animals in shelters are euthanized every year because of lack of space. This is because some people are still buying their animals from pet stores or breeders. Some people believe that the reason the animal ended up in the shelter is because they have done something wrong, but the reason most animals are given up is due to their owner’s lack of time or financial problems, they were strays, or they were rescued from cruelty situations such as puppy mills.
Many people who abuse animals do not realize that they are actually hurting animals, this is known as unintentional. When some people try to discipline their pets they use tactics that they think is acceptable, when in reality is probably not the best way. People also abuse animals due to lack of attention, such as forgetting to feed and water the animals for a number of days. A family may take the animals with them when they leave the house, and forget to leave a window down with the animal inside. One of the biggest unintentional ways of animal cruelty is a way that many people think is helpful but is actually has a negative impact on all of the animals involved, this idea is trying to take in more animals than one can handle, they have good intentions but this is harmful to animals because it forces them to live in unhealthy conditions. There are many new cases of animal hoarding every year, with over 250,000 animals falling victim. Puppy mills are large dog breeding’s that care more about making money than the wellbeing and health of the animals. Many dogs become ill with diseases such as kidney or heart disease as a result of the conditions in which they live.
I can't imagine what life would be if I had to depend on a certain amount of time to excercise, with a five to six foot limitation of how far I'm allowed to wonder. Ofcourse we don't really have to worry about such matters but what about those who do and have no way of speaking upon such unfairness? Eventhough we don't think about our dogs as humas, we do understand the need they have of exercising on a daily basis. Also we can see how little freedom they have once we take them on these daily walks.
