School: a place parents once sent their children, knowing that they would be well taken care of and safe, is no longer a safe haven for all students. With the increase of criminal activity in our society, sadly it has penetrated our schools and becomes an increasing struggle and concern for school systems, parents, students, and their surrounding communities. It isn’t enough to have metal detectors and police in our schools, students and adults continue to penetrate our schools with drugs and weapons on, what feels like, a daily basis. Violence effects the students, the teaching and learning process, the administration, and the community in very negative ways. It causes the students to feel unsafe, in a place where safety should not be an issue. They are there to learn, but instead they have to deal with the reality that bullying, fights, and weapons in schools are part of their daily educational lives. When violence erupts, in a school, it can stop the educational process. For example, a couple of weeks ago, a fight broke out in a class nextdoor to my own. Although we did not hear it immediately, we did when it moved into the hallway. Screaming and yelling insued, which stopped my class immediately. It forced me and my co-teacher to check to see if we, as staff members, needed to step in to help. It also stopped us teaching our lesson and caught the attention of our students. This caused a disruption that lasted about five minutes. Although the time lost may not seem important, when we have our students fifty-five minutes a day, five minutes amounts to quite a bit of educational time. Also, I noticed that my classroom environment went from a focused and relaxed feel to a high energy confusion. Once the situation was under control, it took a few minutes to get the students re-focused and not talk about their experiences with being involved with or watching fights happen in school. Violence is not limited to our in school environment, in fact, it is brought into our schools from outside. Our students are adversely effected by their communities on a regular basis. When weapons are brought into our schools, this is eventually involves the student who brought the weapon in, the staff members, parents, and police officers. This has become so prevalent, that our school policies are forced to acknowledge and set
