The purpose of education has had very little change since the beginning of schooling, also education systems today in the United States have a purpose that provides little to no benefits to children. The purpose has evolved into preparing students to test, test, and test. Instead of providing students with opportunities to grow and find their passion(s), students are expected to learn a great load of material in a short time frame. With these methods and purposes, we are failing the children and ourselves. At some point, we must draw the line and realize this system is failing and it needs reconstruction.

With baby steps, it will get better day by day. One proposal is taking away some of the focus off of taking a test. Receiving low scores often results in the vilifying of educators. With all of this pressure, teachers begin to lose their passion for education and sometimes the unthinkable of giving students the answers to the exams specifically like the case of the eleven school teachers from Atlanta. Eleven teachers were arrested in a cheating scandal in which the teachers provided students with answers to do the standardized tests and some even changed the answers for the kids (WashingtonPost.com). We pressure too many of educators into extreme actions like these. Imagine having a group of children who can barely read and being told they have to score a nearly impossible score in less than year. What is it an alternate for standardized testing? Performance assessments are an excellent way to test a student’s growth subjects and as well as their weaknesses. In the article “If Not Standardized Tests, Then What?" it talks about how these assessments are better than conventional or standardized tests (StandardizedTesting.net). It gives students something to do besides testing. For example, on their performance assessments, they could write about their experience Alternate Spring Break trip which was a serve-learning trip or even their experience of job shadowing a career they hope to pursue. Yes, we could still have a standardized test but take some of the focus and replace with something like performance assessments.
