Education is very important to many people. The right education, amount, where one obtained it is crucial to anyone’s future. The subject of college will come up at least once in everybody’s lifetime whether they attended a college, plan to in the future, or never did. According to Nelson Mandela (2003) “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” So why are there so many high school students working full time at Sonic or Walmart instead of being a full time student? Because the cost of tuition is out of this world. Low income families are suffering and going without things they need in order to save money for a member to attend college. Also, the amount of financial help donated from the government is steadily decreasing. People argue that colleges are expensive not only to attend but to run as well. Plus, there are hundreds and even thousands of students living at the universities. That cannot be cheap. It has been said that if we want to attend an air conditioned classroom with high tech computers and be able to turn on the lights in our dorm rooms then we need to suck it up and stop complaining about the price. But still the high cost of tuition is harming the education of young people, therefore the government should decrease the price of tuition or increase the percentage of financial aid given to each school for the applicants. One reason why the cost of tuition should be lowered is because of working low income families. There are so many people in the United States alone that are going to work every day and making just enough money to feed their family. Rose (2004) estimated that “27 percent of the nation’s working families are low income”. Even though the percentage is small, those peop... ... middle of paper ... ...at higher education must be viewed like health care: Unless you want to go back to the days before antibiotics and registration by hand in the gym, you have to get used to it getting more expensive every year”. It is not just the extracurricular options that are causing tuition prices to soar, if a student lives on campus he or she knows how much those costs can influence tuition. “At public four-year colleges, room and board went up by 3.6 percent, a little over $300”(Baum 2013). Living on campus has its advantages though. A student who lives on campus saves money on gas that would otherwise be used driving to and from school each day. By staying in a dorm room people have an easier time making lifelong college friends and making memories that will last a lifetime. So would paying an extra $800 on top of tuition be worth it? Sounds like a matter of opinion to me.
