“If it is a cliche to say athletics build character as well as muscle, [then] I subscribe to the cliche,” Gerald Ford once said. The issue of it competitive sports should be played or not in schools came to attention in 2013, more than 7.7 million children played sports in school, and now people think it’s “too dangerous” or just don’t like them. Sports should be played because, most often friendships are created, kids stay active and healthy, and they can learn basic teamwork skills. First of all, competitive sports create friendships. Everyone wants to be friended whether you have many friends, or none at all. According to Kirk Mango, “Sports have the power to unite communities.” Therefore, sports can make families out of a small team of strangers. Moreover, Kirk also explains that, “Participating in sports gives athletes the ability to develop long lasting friendships with others who have common interests.” These long lasting friendships are created by sports. …show more content…
Typically, kids choose to live a healthy lifestyle to feel better about themselves. Mango stated that, “In a society where obesity has become a major health issue the physical fitness advantages simply cannot be denied.” By the same token, sports shouldn’t be pushed aside when they are one reason kids are still leading a healthy life. Furthermore, Herschel Walker explained, “What changed my life is, at the end of eighth grade I ended up getting beat up real bad. I went home crying. But I got home and decided enough is enough. That summer every day I started working out. Push-ups, sit-ups, I climbed trees and did chin-ups on the tree limbs I started developing and losing weight.” This quote shows us that sports or sport like activities are an essential way to lose weight. Typically, what Sheed is saying is that sports have brought peers, schools, students, and even communities together to share and engage in one thing they love, sports. The people that are not even engaged in the physical aspect of sports are still brought together. They are able to cherish their favorite teams and show pride as their team endures the road to glory.

For example, an article states, “A 2006 study on female athletes found that when female students are given more opportunity to participate in athletics in high school, their weight and body mass improve.” ("Home." Many kids are becoming overweight. “The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the percentage of children aged 12 to 19 considered obese increased from 5 percent in 1980 to 21 percent in 2012.” ("Pros and Cons of Middle School Sports.") There needs to be Middle school sports or even more kids will become obese. When a kid starts playing a sport, he could really get hooked on it and play every week. Before you know it, your kid could be losing more and more weight until they are not overweight anymore. Also, another article states, “Middle school sports such as track and field or cross-country, which can have large squads, provide an excellent opportunity for students to get in shape.” ("Pros and Cons of Middle School Sports.") Students that join a sport and like it won’t be overweight. They will be too focused on their sport that they will be aware of what and how much they eat because they want to do well in their
Participation in sports has proven to increase self-discipline and self-esteem, and can teach athletes to learn from their mistakes and move on (Issitt). Athletes playing team sports also develop the ability to work well with others and use teamwork in their everyday lives. Teammates form relationships that are strengthened over a common passion and goal. These relationships can last long after high school is over (Chen). These social skills translate into better communication used with an athlete’s family, peers, and in the community. Likewise, “A 2006 study in Maryland found that student athletes are 15 percent more likely than non athletes to be involved in their communities and to take the time for civic engagements, including participating in voting and volunteer activities” (Issitt). The same study also concluded that athletes are far more likely to be comfortable with public speaking than non-athletes. This study provides concrete evidence that high school sports can help to gain mental and social skills that will be used later in life

Sports help them stay in shape because, the Aspen Institute, a nonprofit organization that does humanistic studies, said, “Exercise is one of the least expensive ways to stay healthy, with one study finding that exercise can prevent chronic diseases as effectively as medication,” (Aspen Institute). One of the many benefits of playing sports is that the children will build character. Building character is important because with character they will make new friends and develop different skills. Playing sports at a young age can build character in many ways, “Playing sports at a young age enables children to participate in social interactions and build skills such as teamwork, leadership, and responsibility as they learn to work with others to achieve a common goal,” (Aspen Institute).

This is important because having great friends is essential for early childhood, and they help prevent depression and bullying by providing friends to support you.
Nelson Mandela once said, “Exercise is the key not only to physical health, but to a peace of mind.” Without some kind of athletics, the human mind will not be able to achieve its full potential. Physical activities are a vital component in the lives of any living person. Laurence Jordan said, “It is necessary that physical training should be made part of any education” (599). Along with the exercise most athletes perform on a weekly basis, they also continue to do school work.
Physical activity is important to most people, but others disagree with providing sports at school. In many different districts it is shown how youths that don't play sports have better grades than those who do play sports. Therefore, to help students become exceptional learners, their school should call off sports so teens can do their homework, schools don't spend large amounts of money, and parents and students regain their pride in academic achievements. Sports keep students happy, but not all people agree with the idea of them in school.
Sports has the ability to build self esteem allowing people to build strong relationships. People can build good relationships through sport. People from all backgrounds and abilities can build their self esteem allowing them to build strong relationships by doing physical activities.
Sport creates friendships between people who would not normally communicate. This is great against racism since when people support the same ideals, they have something in common. This encourages communication between people and friendships between different people. Joe Humphrey says that sport creates “barriers between groups” which I think is wrong since people start friendships with all religions due to sport unifying people when supporting the same team.
