Did you know that five million to seven million companion animals enter shelters nationwide each year? Spaying and neutering pets needs to be supported by more communities of people. The American Kennel Club (AKC) is opposed to mandatory sterilization, they state that it, “creates a hardship for responsible breeders.” Spaying and neutering is typically seen by a majority of the population as inhumane and an unnecessary violation of animal rights. The American Veterinary Medical Associations recommend that state and local governments develop effective dog and cat population control programs. Who is to decide what is “effective” enough for the populations, and how would it be done if spaying and neutering is not supported? The spaying and neutering …show more content…
For example, Mark Stickney, Director of General Surgery Services at the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences asserts that neutering a dog will, “Almost completely eliminate the chance that a dog will get mammary cancer, …and there is evidence that it might be helpful to reduce incidents of cancer in cats as well.” Mammary cancer is the most common type of cancer that is found in dogs. Cancer is one of the top killers in aging cats and dogs, so this is a great reason to get your pet spayed or neutered. Most important, neutering your dog will help to get rid of that repulsive smell that comes around when your dog decides to lift its leg up, and pee on something you actually …show more content…
A few of those reasons are because getting your animals fixed increases your furry friends longevity, helps to keep the pet population at the average level, and it allows other animals to be adopted, as well as preventing some from being euthanized. If we want to have our pets around, and stop seeing the homeless ones being put down, then we must take action ourselves. We need to come together and agree that spaying and neutering is a way better option than getting the animals that don’t have a home killed. After all, there are more benefits than disadvantages. If you do not believe it, then sit down with a piece of paper and make a list yourself. I am sure that you will be enticed to side with people who actually care about the lives of their pets. Maybe it would be best if all of humanity started to think like Sri Aurobindo and take after his famous quote, “Life is life – whether in a cat, or dog or man. There is no difference there between a cat or a man. The idea of difference is a human conception for man’s own
Thousands of animals are put to sleep each year due to not having any available homes for them to be adopted. According to Jennifer Sexton and Tom Warhol in Domestic Animal Overpopulation, “The average female cat can produce two litters of six kittens per year, a female dog can produce one litter of six or more puppies per year, making pet overpopulation a significant problem.” Animal overpopulation is costing money and you can help the pets with spay and neutering programs. A new solution is mandatory contracts for breeders and spay and neuter programs. This paper will talk about spay and neuter programs, contracts for breeders, and why some people don’t think animal overpopulation is a problem. Thankfully there are solutions to this issue of animal overpopulation.
Nationally, roughly four million animals are killed in shelters every year. Of these, roughly 95% of all shelter animals are healthy and treatable. (No Kill Advocacy Center). No animal should have to ever be a part of these awful statistics. What will it take to help save these innocent animals from being killed senselessly? Animal kill shelters are horrible, inhumane, and overall completely unnecessary for multiple reasons: No Kill shelters improve adoption rates, all animals lives are valuable, and No Kill shelters save more money than other shelters.
According to the article “Pet Statistics” by the ASPCA estimates there are 70-80 million dogs and 74-96 million cats owned in the United States. It is impossible to determine the number of stray dogs and cats, but the ASPCA estimates there are 70 million cats alone that are strays in the US (“Pet Statistics”). The overpopulation of dogs and cats live either on the streets and die each day, they live in a shelter and try to get adopted, but even then they die. The ASPCA states that nationwide about 7.6 million companion animals enter the shelter and of the 7.6 million approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats (“Pet Statistics”).
There are many people in the world that hate the way something about them looks. So their way of changing that is to undergo a surgery to fix their imperfections. There are also many ways that you can do the same exact thing with a pet. With any pet there is always things that people might want to change for a health reason or a cosmetic reason. With these procedures there are many pros, but there are also many cons that come with it.
Countless lives locked away in cages and forgotten about have overwhelmed our society, it has left blood stains on our history as a species and if history has taught us anything, it’s that we have a choice to change our ways of adjusting to situations. A war which was fought in pursuit of ending such criminal means, yet we as human beings do little to nothing to end the horrific crimes of animal deaths in shelters. It is no secret that this world has become infused with problems that have extended from one side of the globe to the other. Amongst these problems lies a terrible truth: nearly every year, sums of almost eight million cats and dogs have been placed in shelters around the world. Out of these vast numbers, half will be euthanized; that equals to one animal being put down every 8 seconds. Animals that are not adopted are kept in shelters until they find a home. Most of these shelters do not have enough space or resources to care for the animal. Only 15% of dogs and 2% of cats that enter animal shelters are reunited with their owners. The majority of pets are obtained from acquaintances and family members. Twenty-six percent of dogs are purchased from breeders, 20 to 30 percent of cats and dogs are adopted from shelters and rescues, and 2 to 10 percent are purchased from pet shops. In addition, only 56% of dogs and 71% of cats that enter animal shelters are euthanized. The 10% of the animals received by shelters have been spayed or neutered, while 78 percent of dogs and 88 percent of cats are not spayed or neutered, in 2009 Statistics from animal shelters in 55 counties in WV (West Virginia) shows that nearly 54% of all animals entering shelters are euthanized, The euthanasia rates ranged from the lowest at 5% to the highe...
Seeing maimed animals are not pleasant images. Those images sometimes appear across computer and television screens. The advocacy groups who place these images in the public’s view are trying to jolt people into the realization that abuse exists. For every ten seconds that goes by an animal is getting abused (“Animal… Statistics”). One statistic states that “71% of pet-owning women entering women’s shelters reported that their batterer had injured, maimed, killed or threatened family pets for revenge or to psychologically control victims; 32% reported their children had hurt or killed animals” (“Animal… Violence”). Animal cruelty comes in several forms, some of which people do not know. There is animal experimenting, animal abuse, and mistreatment of animals. and through revealing the results from research, one discovers the horrific effects of animal abuse.
If one wants to live a more responsible, more active, and a healthier life style they should get a dog. Obtaining the previously mentioned qualities are great but gaining a best friend is even better. Dogs are intelligent animals and their personalities are one of a kind. With training, love, and patience any dog can become a great addition to one’s family. Adoption from an animal shelter is a great way to get a dog although there are adoption fees most of the money is being used to vaccinate the dog before its taken to its forever home. Buying a dog from a reputable breeder is another option as how one gets a dog. Reputable breeders usually guarantee a puppy’s health. One might have to go through a few more hoops to be able to buy a dog from
Many people don’t spay or neuter their pets, especially cats. There are a lot of benefits and yet according to The Humane Society of the United States, six to eight million cats enter the shelters each year and while three to four million are adopted out, another three to four million are killed. “An unsprayed female cats, her mate and all of their offspring producing just 2 litters per year (the average is 3-4), with just 2.8 surviving kittens per litter can total to 66,088 cats in just 6 years” (Goldstein & O’Keefe 4).

According to the Humane Society, 4-5 million cats and dogs that live in shelters are euthanized each year! This does not include the total number of pets in families who choose to euthanize their pets. In the article, "Rare White Rhino Population Drops to 3 with Euthanasia at San Diego Zoo," we are told that there are only 3 White Rhinos left in the world, due to euthanizing. According to the Washington Post, a 41-year-old white rhino named Nola, was put to sleep due to a bacterial infection and age-related health problems. It is vital that we stand up and realize what is right for animals. We need to have a voice and speak for them because they cannot speak for themselves. We need to realize that the practice of euthanizing is not right. It is not our right to determine when an animal should die.
The abuse that animals endure at human hands is heartbreaking, sickening, and infuriating. Animals are just as delicate as humans, so why not abuse us too? Animal lives should be just important as ours. No animals should be killed or abused for testing, entertaining, clothing, or hoarding. Every year, millions of animals are being killed and torture for testing.
Pets are a common sight in many households today. In fact, according to the APPMA National Pet Owners Survey, 63 percent of U.S. households own a pet. At the top of this percentage are dogs and cats. One of the most important decisions an owner of a dog or cat has to make is whether or not to get them spayed or neutered. There are various reasons why people choose to not have this done, but all those reasons can be proven invalid. Many factors come in to play as why this is such an important thing to do. The effects of dogs and cats not being spayed or neutered has become such a major issue that it should be a law that all pet owners have to get their pet spayed or neutered.
The perfect dog sits, stays, rolls over and shakes .the very moment you decide to take on that puppy thats what most people think the puppy will be nothing but a cute playing little dog with good manners, “you must rely on the solid foundation of these seven things socialization, housetraining, sit, down, stay, come, and to walk nicely on leash. “ (De Vito 16)..From the beginning people have learned that a obedient dog brings upon many benefits for both dog and human. In reality when people get that puppy most realise that it was not born with the commands that most associate dogs with.
One Green Planet says that there are still more than 70 million needy animals, only around 6-8 million enter shelters, and only about 20% adopt their pets from a shelter. Such a small percentage but there are still many animals getting put down. One of the main reasons I am against animal breeding is because most of the animals who get bought end up getting abandoned, which is why the number of strays increase. Like I said, why should anyone bring more animals (cats and dogs) into this world when there are more than enough in a local shelter waiting for their forever homes?
Next we have Humane Society of the United States, the nation’s largest and most effective animal protection organization. They dedicate themselves to conduct campaigns to raise awareness about the problem of animal abuse, stray animals, and animal rescue. They provide shelters and sanctuaries for animals without permanent homes. According to their research, there are about 2.7 million adoptable dogs and cats in the U.S that are put down to sleep every 11 seconds, and often the animals being put to sleep are offspring of pets who has a permanent home and human companion. This led Humane Society to believe that the process of spaying and neutering is a very crucial process which needs to be done towards every pets to ensure that there are no unwanted breeding and significantly reducing the amount of animals being left to stray.
