Smoking Is Murder Secondhand smoke can cause much more damage than people can imagine. It is the cause for severe asthma attacks, respiratory infections, ear infections and sudden infant death syndrome in children. Although the people being affected by secondhand smoke aren’t smoking themselves, it is a very growing problem around the world. There are many big companies that sell cigarettes such as Newport and Marlboro but organizations also exist in the world that are trying to influence smokers to stop smoking. In the very clever and moving advertisement released in April 2008 by CONAC, also known as the Chilean Corporation Against Cancer, the corporation uses ethos, pathos, and logos to express the idea that smoking isn’t just dangerous for the smoker but for everyone else around them especially children. The company’s goal is to influence smokers to stop smoking around them.

If the organization would have just used statistics, it wouldn’t have been as successful because it wouldn’t have been as traumatizing and emotional as it is using Pathos. This picture is going to talk about “Smoking kills slowly,” I have found this advertisement which is a picture on Google. It grabs my attention while I was searching for an advertisement. This picture aims to convince the reader that smoking can lead to death. Also, how it will affect us while we are smoking. The advertisement effectively uses pathos and logos in this picture to make a convincing case.
The campaign Truth focuses on giving facts, truths and statistics to its viewers to become educated on the topic of tobacco. Underneath the large text from above, the second fact states that “90% of them started as teen smokers.” Many adults that have become addicted to smoking cigarettes began the habit as teens. There are many people that believe smokers are not good people and that they are going to be ill. That is what the artist of this picture is portraying. Truth’s most recent campaign, ‘Finish It’, has a strong theme: “be the generation that ends smoking for good.” This has been presented and shown through social media and popular television shows. Through the exposure of the deathly, and eye opening facts through social media, it has been a great impact to teenagers. On Truth’s website they state that “We’re not here to criticize your choices, or tell you not to smoke. We’re here to arm everyone—smokers and nonsmokers—the the tools to make it change” (thetruth.com). Many other anti—smoking campaigns shame and make smokers feel guilty but Truth is mainly about exposing the facts and making people more knowledgeable about tobacco.

Anti-smoking advertisements, such as yours, are meant to inform people of the dangers of tobacco as well as discourage others from developing the bad habit. In order to successfully persuade your audience, the advertisement cleverly utilizes the three rhetorical appeals of ethos, logos, and pathos through its image and implied meanings.
Over the last 50 years, smoking and the public image of smoking has changed dramatically. Americans have learned the harmful effects of smoking and have put a heavy disdain on the use of it. The number of new smokers has drastically dropped over the years and many that had previously smoked have stopped. Some have turned to electronic cigarettes as a safer way to intake nicotine. Nowadays, tobacco advertisements are virtually non-existent in our society, but when they were abundant they depicted smoking as a cool and sophisticated activity. Recently the FDA “The Real Cost” campaign ad shows a young girl asking for menthol cigarettes and shows her peeling off the skin off her face because the money isn’t enough. This commercial is geared toward people who are uninformed and think Menthols are safer than cigarettes such as young teens. The ad is seen as a reflection of the audience of young teens and a danger and caution to parents who have young teens. This ad focuses on the damage menthol cigarettes and regular cigarettes affect skin. FDA “The Real Cost” campaign advertisement is targeted to inform young teens that menthol and cigarettes don’t just cost money but also skin by using mostly pathos, a bit of logos, and it adds to the cultural struggle of preventing teens from smoking.
Thank you for smoking, it’s what big companies like Marlboro and Camel want to let us know, and keep smoking. Tobacco has been around for thousand of years, but today’s cigarettes contain many harmful and poisonous toxins. Yet, its simple: Tobacco smoking kills, reduces economic productivity, and strengthens poverty. But lets be frank, everyone’s aware of these issues already, everyone’s out to get cigarette companies; however, there’s a bigger problem. What happens when cigarette companies target today’s children?
Someone you might know, whether your grandparents, parents, siblings, friends, or even yourself, smokes or has smoked cigarettes. If you haven’t yourself, you’ve seen the effects and consequences one can encounter. Not always, but sometimes, you see the struggles and sickness your loved one can go through and you’d give anything to make that someone feel better. Technology has been on a rise and possibly figured out a safer way. Smoking an electronic cigarette or perhaps a traditional cigarette still provides the nicotine, but it’s possible one can change not just someone’s health for the better but others around them.
People throughout the time have been worried about some acts that people make; these acts are sometimes performed unconsciously or without realizing these are affecting they negatively affect others. Some reasons why this happens, they do not realize they are making someone uncomfortable, or they simply do not care about it. Smoking is one of these activities. For a long time, smoking in public places has been extremely popular regardless of age or gender. Many smokers believe they are free to smoke wherever and whenever they. Even if they realize the damage they are causing to themselves, which is a personal decision, when they smoke in public places they ignore the collective damage they are causing others. It has been claimed that despite not engaging in the activity themselves, “passive smokers suffer the same horrifying bad consequences as active smokers” in the form of second-hand smoke (Ecobichon & Wu, 1990, p. 43). Smoking is thus a dangerous activity that is becoming more and more popular in campus every day and is becoming a social and educational problem. Schools should ban smoking from their campus, and those that have should implement stricter methods of enforcing such rules.
Many actions have been taken on vaping and cigarettes, such as only allowing people over or at the age of eighteen to buy the product and putting warning labels on products. The serious issue is there needs to be action applied to the fact that these products can kill a human being. There is a wide variety of policies trying to be passed for vaping and cigarettes. A vaping regulation is trying to pass making all vape companies to carry products similar to products back when vaping firs started. This could cause the vaping market crash, making people lose money, and most important jobs. Some actions should be taken on tobacco products because of the risk of getting cancer in it is high.

According to an article from the American Lung Association, “Health Effects” (n.d.), “Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., causing over 438,000 deaths per year”. The umbrella term for tobacco use includes the use of cigarettes, cigars, e-cigs and chewing tobacco. While tobacco causes adverse health consequences, it also has been a unifying factor for change in public health. While the tobacco industries targets specific populations, public health specifically targets smokers, possible smokers, and the public to influence cessation, policies and education.

Second Hand Smoke In the 1950's and 60's scientists gave the people a lot of evidence on the deadly effects of smoking where the tobacco companies on the other hand tried to put the doubt in people’s minds through the campaigns to show that it is not all true. By the time people actually decided to take care of their health and finally saw how life-threatening smoking could be by real life examples, the tobacco companies already got rich from its sales. Nowadays, nobody doubts that “firsthand” smoke is deadly to your health and it causes lung cancer and heart disease in adults and asthma and bronchitis in children. Now the industry is onto the secondhand smoke. Scientists and researchers are representing a lot of evidence and research that has been done throughout the years showing that the secondhand smoke can also cause a lung cancer in nonsmokers. The study has been done of people who have been long exposed to secondhand smoke and it shows that 26 out of 33 published studies indicate a link between secondhand smoke and lung cancer. The study estimates that the people that were breathing secondhand smoke were 8 to 150 percent more likely to get lung cancer. The tobacco companies are trying to argue the facts and are still in serious debate about the health hazards of breathing a secondhand smoke. A lot of anti-smoking organizations are trying to turn smoking in public into a private activity that does not have to involve nonsmokers breathing secondhand smoke. What is even more important is that many of these organizations convinced a lot of smokers to cut back or quit completely. The problem of secondhand smoke is increasing because it is so common in our society. It makes secondhand smoke the third-ranking cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers. Mothers who live with a smoking spouse have to realize the ill effects of secondhand smoke on children even before they are born. The smoking components reach the developing fetus through the mother. Infants that are born in a smoking environment weigh less and have a weaker chance of becoming a fully developed child. Secondhand smoke leads to blood clots and damages arterial linings which are the two most leading factors in the development of heart disease. The tobacco companies got scared of the effect that the secondhand smoke research can do to the cigarette makers.
One way that the tobacco industry can be more ethical is changing their advertising strategy. I believe that today’s advertising strategy is very misleading about cigarettes. Examples of this unethical advertising is in Argentina, here 20 percent of television advertising is spent on smoking commercials, as well as in countries in and around Africa there are billboards that depict a man in a business suit stepping out of a black Mercedes as a chauffeur holds the door. This displays that cigarettes make people classy and sophisticated, making cigarettes look not only harmless but stylish. Another good example of unethical depiction on cigarettes is in Nigeria; here they promote a cigarette for graduates, with a picture of a university and a student in a cap and gown. One of the biggest problems that people are faced with on a day-to-day basis is cigarette smoke. The sole cause for 480,000 deaths each year just in the United States is accredit to cigarettes(CDC). For a lot of the smokers the habit of smoking happens to assist them when under stress and dealing with issues that are unmanageable.
