There are many different opinions on whether or not professional athletes should get paid as much as they do. Many say that these athletes are extremely overpaid. Others think that they get paid a good amount for what they do. This is an argument that will most likely never end. People will always have their own opinion about this (KS, J. B. n.d.). There are many reasons why these professional athletes should be paid less. Professional athletes are basically just entertainers and some of them are getting paid millions to do this. That is an outrageous amount of money for someone to make. These athletes are not even working for the full year and they only play a certain amount of games. They may practice every day but they certainly do not play games every day. Different athletes do play different amount of games, but no matter the amount it is not worth what we are paying them. NFL (National Football League) football players only play a maximum of 24 games in the whole season. Some of the players get paid to sit on the bench and they never even touch the field in a game (KS, J. B. n.d.). These so called professional athletes are really just playing children’s games only they are getting paid more money than most people. Many of these athletes don’t have a very good education, which is …show more content…
This makes them think that these players deserve what they get paid. The professional sports industry is one of the most successful and profitable businesses in the world. People aren’t only just paying for tickets to watch these athletes they can watch them on television, here them on radio, and even on computers. Many people argue that these players put in well over 40 hours a week when you look at everything they do. They must practice, study, go workout, and play the games. These players also risk their lives every time they step onto the field or court (Stein, D. 2017, April
Players do not deserve the money they receive. There are people who do much more than the players do. Why do teachers not get paid millions of dollars to teach kids? Some of those kids end up going on to become professional athletes. Police officers and firemen risk their lives to keep people safe and most of them do not even make any more than 95 thousand dollars a year (Megerian). These athletes get fined more money than that and hand it over like someone just asked them for one dollar. Players have all of this money and do not even do anything worth earning it. Why do they get this money? It is because fans value athletes more than the important things in life like education and family.
Association such as the NFL and NBA aren't filled with a lot of people. Barely anybody will actually make it that far, and some people practice for countless hours. "According to a poll from last year only 7.6% of highschool athletes play for college level sports, and only 1.7% go pro from college sports. And when you think about it people who play for college had to practice for such a large amount of time and there not even pro (Manfred)!" So why should the 55.5% of students who play ...
There has been an extensive debate over the years about college athletes being paid and I honestly don’t see why there is a debate about it at all. The NCAA has strict rules about players receiving benefits from the school in forms of helping players and their families in the form of paychecks or even helping pay bills. College sports bring in an enormous amount of money for the schools every year and are expected to be given nothing in return. Sports do not only bring in money to schools but also more students and fans. The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) have taken several players’ records and rewards from them for the simple fact of getting benefits from the school and that is just not acceptable (Allen 115). Athletes are just like every other student in the way of having to pay for housing, food, bills, and more. Having to balance school and sports gives athletes no time to have jobs which means they do not have a way to bring in money to pay for the essentials of going to
Parents and teachers have preached that getting an education is important since students first entered Kindergarten. Although there is proof that athletes have endured success from both pathways, academics and athletics, it’s the financially safe and most logical choice for a student athlete to solidify his or her future after athletics. Becoming a professional athlete is a high-risk high reward situation but receiving a college education lowers that risk. A college education could potentially increase the knowledge further to enhance their athletic abilities intellectually also (Clary Dec. 13, 2009). Most of the time if the athlete is good enough to go pro it’s likely that they have athletic full–ride scholarships from major college programs. With college expenses the way they are today one might argue that this is a better deal especially if the chance of going pro remains after the athlete graduates from college. After retiring from...
College sports have become more popular throughout the past few years and the NCAA is doing an immense amount of money. This increase in money has caused colleges to become involved in this global debate over whether college athletes should be paid or not. Many athletes believe they should be paid for all their hard work, time, and dedication to the organization. Other people like, Kristi Dosh, believe that college athletes shouldn’t be paid because there are too many questions that haven’t been answered for them to join the opposing side. A lot of questions come up with this debate, like which athletes are going to get paid? Kristi Dosh is an author and an ESPN sports business reporter. Dosh wrote the essay, “The Problems with Paying College Athletes”, on June 9, 2011. This essay was published in Forbes which is a business magazine about sports and money. Kristi Dosh makes a somewhat convincing argument by asking a lot of questions to get her audience to realize how difficult this change is, however; she doesn’t do a very good job giving any citations or statistics to back up her statements. Ultimately, I think Dosh is convincing to her audience, but the weaknesses outweigh the strengths.
to get paid for the time and effort they put in. Then you have those who believe athletes are already
Should college athletes be paid just because people make money off of them? The answer is yes, the amount of work college athletes put into their sport when their sport is in season is more than the average worker in america. The NCAA makes more money of their college athletes than the NBA and the NHL combined. The athletes get none of this profit that they so dearly deserve. At least the professional athletes are making money off of them being broadcasted on national television weekly and sometimes dailey.
With those statistics, I think it’s safe to say that being a collegiate athlete requires more than a full time job. Trying to keep up with homework and attendance in class poses many challenges especially when the NCAA requires students to miss class for championship games, televised games, or other events that bring in revenue for the school. Instead of focusing on quality education for athletes, the NCAA focuses on violations of amateurism, such as athlete’s receiving financial inducements to play, and neglected the investigation of charges that athletes may be receiving inferior education according to Dean Purdy of Bowling Green State University in his article “Are athletes also
Do you think professional athletes are overpaid? You might think they earn more than what they are worth for playing half a year, but athletes have many things which contribute to their salary. Some of these things include their earnings from endorsements, ticket sales, performance, merchandise, their social contributions, and TV ratings. Although there are many factors that contribute to their salary, professional athletes may be overpaid because as a society, we contribute to their success. So, in the end, part of the athlete’s salary comes from the people who support the sports in the first place. These are just some of the reasons why athletes are paid so much money.
In closing, these athletes are making too much money in a society that traditionally bases salaries on the value of ones work. These athletes do not know what real work is or how hard it is to make a dollar. Although their job is difficult, they do not play a role in our economy like their salaries indicate. Therefore, they should receive less money.
Professional athletes play in front of an audience and get paid for it. Fans like seeing these athletes perform their best so much that they are willing to pay to watch. Professional athletes are performers or entertainers. They must perform well in each game or risk losing. If they don 't play well, they won 't last long. The work of professional athletes is hardworking and at times demanding. This is both physical and mental stress. They must be in the best possible shape. Athletes usually work out all year, both during the season and in the off season in order to be able to start for their team. They must be able to perform their jobs at the highest level at all times. Professional athletes also face the constant threat of injuries that could potentially end their careers. For these and other reasons, this kind of job can be quite stressful. During the season, athletes often practice more than 50 hours a week. They may have other duties related to the team as well for instance, going to meetings or watching films about the opposition. Athletes have to move to the place where their team is located. If the manager decides to trade them, they have to most likely to move again. Being a professional athletes they often have curfews and other restrictions on the things they do. They are not allowed to just leave the job at the office like workers in other jobs can. That’s why the athletes receive what they get, because of what they do when they need to
Have you ever wondered why NFL athletes get paid to play a sport, but college athletes don’t? College athletes should not get paid to play a sport because they are playing for the love of the game. Many athletes get scholarships or benefits to play a sport in the first place which means that they don’t need any more money. Sports should be a reward for good grades and only players that really love the sport should play it.
Athletes also have post schooling benefits as well. Athletes can return to college to earn a degree even after their
...to settle for less, and in compensation a possible retirement plan or some form of benefits should be assembled. The only athletes that I truly disagree with are the ones that can’t differentiate between “needs” and “wants”. Luxuries are wants, and necessities are needs; if they could settle for less (yet still reasonable) money they would avoid lockouts and holdouts, and continue to entertain our society, which is their whole purpose.
If you were to compare what most athletes spend their money on to somebody like Bill Gates, you would see a significant difference. Bill Gates is considered to be very generous as he makes a very large amount of money per year but also gives a large portion to charitable foundations. Athletes now, and even back to when professional sports started, take for granted the amount of money that they make and what they could spend it on. I'm not opposed to them making a good salary, but after all, they are getting paid to do what they love. Now granted that they do have to devote a large portion of their lives to the sport that they play, there should be a good amount of pay in return but I think it has gone too far with trying to get the best players all on certain teams and paying them millions of
