Many believe sex and gender are the same but in reality they differ greatly. Gender takes in consideration what groups deem as normal behavior for a male and female. But sex is what your body parts consist of, your reproduction organs and a penis or vagina (Henslin, 2015, p. 291). You come into this world with a sex, but the world around you influences whether you choose to express yourself in a feminine or masculine way. Where you are in the world impacts what you and your society view as correct behavior for men and women. When we are born our sex determines how we will be treated and what we will achieve in our lifetime. Men and women in society are very different, women are seen as the minority and submissive to men in some cultures while men are viewed as the dominant force and the superior sex (Henslin, 2015, p.292). They do so through outlets like our families, media and society. Our families can either embrace gender roles or be completely against them. Media feeds us what is acceptable for men and women to act, a man can post a picture where he is showing off his body and people will embrace him but if a woman does the exact same thing people shame her by calling her insulting names. Society as a whole defines a set gender role and enforces it depending on your location.
We are born with a sex but are given the choice of gender and how we choose to express ourselves. Gender roles teach us what is adequate behavior for men and women. Outside forces such as family, media and society itself try to make us conform to set gender roles. We live in a world where it is becoming more acceptable to be who you truly are and break the mold you were given upon birth. It’s comforting to know the world is changing for the better so people can express themselves
