The United States of America is number one in the world for many reasons. The U.S. has more top ten universities than any other country (Bridgestock), the most medals in the Olympics since it began, the most powerful military (Johnson), the five largest corporations, and fourteen of the most valuable brands in the world (Wile), but the U.S. is also number one in one of the most unacceptable categories. The U.S. has the most school massacres in the world. School massacres are clear and present dangers to every campus across the nation. The worst school massacre in the U.S. did not involve shooting, it was a bombing that killed over forty people. While, school killings only make up less than one percent of all homicides and suicides among adolescents During my first semester of college I learned something very important in one of my political science classes. During a debate over allowing concealed carry on campuses I learned the average response time of police is over nine minutes. A massacre will be over before the police even arrive on the scene. A larger number of school massacres end because of a shoot-out with police or suicide by the mutilator. In either case the killing of innocent civilians is over before police arrive and have time to react to the situation. It is known that some attempts at extermination of a school’s inhabitants simply occur because the killer developed an appetite for masculinity or power and control over people. Allowing concealed weapons is the correct solution because the idea of people being able to defend themselves can deter a murderer. A power addicted psychopath is not going to feel very powerful or in control if there is a possibility of them being on the receiving end of a few pistols, which past students would not have been wielding, when he or she is attempting to commit an act of terrorism. Allowing the concealed carry of weapons may take the perceived power away from the irrational butcher before he or she decides to act. Rationality may be restored before lives are taken and psychiatric assistance could possibly be provided for the troubled soul. There is no guarantee that this will prevent every disturbed person from relentlessly pursuing the fear of powerless humans. The only way to stop someone like this from killing is to disarm them before he or she can accomplish slaying every one in sight. A person with a concealed weapon may be able to dissolve the situation before casualties
Most of us learned when we were very young that we should not judge by appearances. But, in the aftermath of massacres in schools everywhere, a sane person has to take seriously what the material world shows - and pass judgment. After all, a lack of judgment and subsequent action may lead to further youth violence.

Before we get into how we aren’t the greatest country, what classifies a country to be the greatest in the world? According to OECD, (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development), they classify what it takes to be a great nations on a few values where we aren’t doing so well in. This organization only has records and statistics for 34 participating countries. Nevertheless, we only do best between them all in one category. We place second in the category of money and wealth, behind Luxembourg. The other three categories are: Land of Opportunity, where we placed twelfth, Joy of Life, where we placed sixteenth, and Safety, where we placed twenty-eighth. (4) To make a country great, it takes a combination of things and the hard work of that nation. A few major things a growing country would need to become great, are: a solid economy, a sound society, good leadership, and the will of the people, to name a few. Each of these things that are needed have many finer points below them that all work towards their main goal.
... a high school student, I don’t take much stock in the safety codes and drills in place to keep students safe in the event of a shooting. I would feel much safer knowing my teacher has the ability to protect the class, rather than hide and lock the door. An educator is responsible for the students in their class. They are responsible for their education and their safety while the children are in their classroom. The safety of fifteen or more students would be much more easily secured by one person if that person was armed. Promoting teachers to arm themselves also prevents school shootings; criminals don’t attack a victim that can fight back. At least 60% of school attacks would be prevented with an armed faculty warning sign. School faculty members should be armed to secure the safety of the countries students, and in hand prevent the majority of potential shootings.
It is a sad time in American history when one can easily recount recent school shootings in their own area. This ease stems from a sharp increase in the number of firearms brought into elementary and middle schools across the country, with an intense focus on the issue beginning after the shooting of 20 children from Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut. Most school shooters are male, white, and often upper middle class. They are also more, often than not, under some type of mental stress that is causing them to create this type of violence in our communities. In fact, many school shooters are never suspected of doing any harm to their peers and teachers until it is much too late.

Today in the United States many people argue over the fact of guns being legal or illegal. There are people using guns for personal safety and there are others who use them for crimes, as well as for other situations. Firearm deaths in the United States have slowly been decreasing from year to year with all these bills getting passed to promote a safer country than ever before. Guns are the main weapon for youth suicide, school shootings, and for committing murder. In 2010 there were 2,711 infants, child, and teenage firearm deaths. As in school shootings and in committing murder, studies show shooters often had multiple, non-automatic guns, shootings were planned, most youth tell before shooting, shooters have a history of being bullied or threatened, shooters have mental issues, and shooters have done suicidal gestures before (Gun Control with School Shootings). Although there are people who use guns for murdering, there are also those who oppose guns being used without the proper requirements. 85% of all respondents to the survey supporting requiring states to report people to national background-checks systems who are prohibited from owning gu...
Despite Norway’s strict requirements in order to own a gun, they couldn’t prevent a mass shooting that took the lives of 77 people in 2011 (Masters). One thing you don’t hear very often from the leaders of our country, is the idea that more guns could prevent shootings. In the United States, we have “gun free zones,” which include schools and other public places. In these areas, guns are strictly prohibited, and instead of preventing shootings have actually became a target for them.Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC), “found that 92 percent of mass shootings since 2009 have taken place in designated gun-free zones” (Blackwell). The author of “Ban gun-free zones,” Ken Blackwell claims that those who commit mass shootings want the publicity, and will go where they know they can do the most damage, because the more serious the shooting is, the more publicity it will receive. Blackwell goes on to say, “most mass shootings don’t end until the police arrive. Killers typically have several minutes to slaughter as many victims as they can without fear of interference” (Blackwell). John Lott, the author of “A Look at the Facts on Gun-Free Zones,” backs up Blackwell’s claims of mass shooters targeting places where guns are prohibited. Lott uses evidence from mass shooters themselves as his evidence, and one very recent tragedy is the shooting in a Charleston, South Carolina church, in June 2015. According to the Crime Research Prevention Center, cited by Lott in his article, the shooter told those around him about his plans to carry out the shooting. His original plan was to go to the College of Charleston, but apparently veered away from the college when he realized that there was heavily armed security, obviously settling for the Church. Another example is James Holmes, who committed a mass shooting in a movie theatre. Holmes had what Lott referred to as a
Written on December 15, 1791 was the second amendment of the constitution. It states that "A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."(Cite)? United States citizens have used guns for various reasons that include protection, hunting, and sporting reasons. The topic on gun control is a very complex topic that is discussed daily. It is such a big issue that it has both the democrats and republicans firmly established in their positions. One of the main reasons this has been such an important topic in recent years is because of all the murders and massacres that have happened recently in the United States. As our newly nominated president, Donald
There are many different types of school violence. The one that gets the most public attention is school shootings. The term school shooting is basically defined as an act where a student, school staff member, or intruder from the outside commits an act on the school campus. One of the most well known school shootings took place at Columbine High School near Littleton, Colorado. On a Tuesday April 20,1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, students at Columbine High School, took the lives of thirteen other students before taking the lives of their own. When we think of events like this, we have many questions that go through our mind. Thoughts like why did this happen, could it have been prevented, and how did impact the individuals involved just to name a few. There are probably several more thoughts that go through the minds of a nation when we hear about traumatic evens such as a school shooting.
When someone has a license to carry a concealed firearm, it does not mean that they should be able to carry wherever they would like. No one person is responsible enough for that privilege. In a high stress situation of an active shooter scene, even a highly trained person can make a bad assessment of the situation. Someone that just bought their first firearm or just got their license to carry, can make the situation worse. Firearms should not be allowed on any school campus because they are dangerous, can lead to more gun violence, and more innocent deaths due to inexperience.
Due to the recent disruption of violent crimes on campus, many citizens that are pro-gun activist have suggested that both the students and teachers should be allowed to carry concealed weapons on school campuses. Those who are with guns allowed on school campuses claim that their rights have been violated for the reason that many college campuses refuse to allow weapons of any kind on their property. The Constitution of The United States of America already grants citizens the right to carry guns with them. It is not appropriate for guns to be in a vulnerable area such as a college campus or any University. There are already too many guns available to the public or easy to get any kind of gun, and allowing them on
It is sad to say that the killing of Walter Scott by Officer Slager is all too familiar. Every time we turn around there is a black man, black woman, black little girl, or a black little boy that is being gunned down by those who are supposed to protect us. I read somewhere online that in the past five years there have been two hundred police shootings in the state of South Carolina, seventy of them resulted in deaths, and none of the officers were found guilty. We must stop the violence of our people, especially by those who are supposed to protect and save us. We have to stop sitting and waiting on decisions, and go demand them ourselves. It is necessary that we keep our young black men and women out of the streets and prison systems and
In the United States there have been 142 school shootings since 2013. In Australia there has never been a school shooting. “A school shooting is a form of mass shooting involving a gun attack on an educational institution, such as a school or university”(Wikipedia). According to the United States Secret Service, a school shooting is where the school is purposely planned and selected as the location for the attack. A school shooting may occur between any individual, student, instructor, administrator and staff employed institution (Sinnamon, 2016). There is no one profile to describe a shooter but almost all attackers are students at the school. School shootings occur when anyone enters a campus and begins firing weapons such as a rifle, shotgun
There are more accidental deaths due to guns if there are more people carry guns (Thompson, Price, Dake, Teeple, Bassler, Khubchandani, Stratton 2013) In a survey, 95 percent did not support individuals carrying concealed guns on campuses. Teachers and students would not feel safe to give their opinion on a heavily debated topic because it might get someone angry to the point where they pull out their guns. So, individuals would not feel safe giving their opinion or giving out bad grades (Price, Thompson,.. Teeple 2014).
