The United Nations made a conservative estimation that 850,000 refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, and a number of other nations in Africa and the Middle East will have made their way to Europe by the end of 2016 . Secretary of State John Kerry has stated that the influx of refugee arrivals from countries such as Syria and Iraq could be tapered by ending the Syrian Civil War . However, steps need to be taken to mitigate the current refugee crisis facing the European Union (EU). The EU has hitherto been unable to find a rapid and succinct solution to the crisis due to porous Mediterranean borders and disagreement over policy solutions . If the United States were to offer to take 100,000 refugees in both 2016 and 2017, it would reduce nearly a quarter of the EU’s burden. Additionally, this number of refugees is ideal because it would nearly match the number currently proposed by the European Union Commission (120,000). Refugees will be selected by skill set, with considerations given to the families of those selected, ultimately totaling 100,000. Naturally, these individuals will undergo a security screening to prevent militant infiltration.
The strategic placement and socio-economic integration of refugees If the United States would accept 100,000 refugees, it must do so in a way that is effective and does not interrupt the economies to which these refugees are placed and integrated. However, 100,000 is such a substantial number that additional communities should be considered as not to negatively affect the economies of the cities in which they are placed . A slew of communities in states such as Texas, Florida, California, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania would need to be called upon as they have both the metropolitan centers and the social and public institutions to host and integrate these refugees .
