Police officers have procedures they must follow. Anything can happen while on the line-of-duty. Officers should be ready for any situation that is thrown at them. They are not always ready for the things they can’t control though. Just because they have a badge does not mean they are not human. We must respect what they do for a city because it is a dangerous job. An officer 's job is not always easy, a life can be taken in an instant without the right procedures.
New ways of protecting officers are always improving. Like cameras in police cars and on their uniform, even in their flashlights. Not all police officers get them though, only a select few because of the fundings and they are expensive. “A U.S. Department of Justice report from

Like lighter improved body armor instead of the standard thick ones. “More than 2,800 police officers’ lives have been saved by body armor since the mid-1970” (NIJ para. 3). “All police are required to wear a bulletproof vest as well as have state of the art armory.” Not only has the gear improved but the communication has too. Their portable radios can update by themselves. In addition they can block sensitive police information from being intercepted. The radio even changes frequencies without having to do it manually. (NIJ para. 1) These radios help stop criminals from intercepting police calls. Before this anybody could access their frequencies to hear what they were saying ,or when they were arriving to a scene. Another problem with the old radio system was when their system wasn 't working, it was hit with a bunch of calls because of the 9/11 attack. It caused it to stop because of all the frequencies coming in at once. (Kelly M. Sharp, Keri Losavio para. 6) As a result caused thousands to die because they couldn 't receive the evacuation call. This did not only affect the police but every other emergency response. Despite all the problems that it did have it now is improved and has radio maintenance when a radio is down. They are more then ready for another state emergency now with the communication system. It still has a few tweaks in it but is better than what is …show more content…
The act is called HR 218/Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act. This act states a few things like “meets standards, if any, established by the agency which require the employee to regularly qualify in the use of a firearm.” (NRA). This helps by making sure they can shoot with accuracy and or qualify for a weapon. Also they can’t be “under the influence of alcohol or another intoxicating or hallucinatory drug or substance; and is not prohibited by Federal law from receiving a firearm.” These acts might seem like a duh but it helps reduce the risk of officers who have health issues. They don’t want officers trying to harm other or themselves while on any substance. The “Fourth Amendment-Officer Safety and the Protective Automobile Search: An Expansion of The Pat Down Frisk.” It follows that if the officer feels like the suspect has probable cause he can search it without breaking this amendment. Even though there isn’t a probable cause if he feels there a weapon in the car he can do a pat-down-frisk. (Timothy M. Ison article 5). The officer has the right to do these if his life feels threaten. It is a difficult situation to be in because it’s hard to tell if the person is reaching for a gun or not; or if the person has the gun on him. With this amendment it helps the officer if he feels in danger at anytime can search the car and him without breaking the amendment.
With budget cuts in some states might not
Throughout the risk assessment process, ideas for action were identified and documented. The documentation of these ideas led to the development of potential action item worksheets which were then selected, prioritized, and refined. Detailed risk assessment information for each hazard is included and located through this document.
Police Body Cameras Due to devastating events that have occurred between policemen and civilians, law enforcements find it liable for police officers to be fitted with body cameras. In doing so it is thought to bring an increase in trust in the community, reduce brutality and crime, as well as elucidate good cops still around. I feel body cameras will bring more awareness to police departments when it comes to the honesty in their staff’s actions when they are unsupervised. They can be used as hard evidence in courtrooms, to help make the correct judgment on the situation in question.
Is people going to forget what happen in Ferguson? How about George Zimmerman being proven not guilty? Or that Eric Garner was screaming “ I can’t breathe” before his death? There are lists of African Americans all over the world who were not given the justice that they deserved. In todays, news African Americans are being treated unfairly compared to any other demographic groups. America is the greatest country in the world, but it is difficult to believe that being in the 21st century racism still does exist. For instance, when it was time to remove the confederate flag, some demographic groups had a hard time letting go. People who argue that “blue lives matter,” which states that police are justified when using force and being unfair. These reasons are not justifiable enough to kill someone. Black Lives Matter alleges that police target and use
Should police officers be mandated to wear body cameras? That is a question that has grown to be widely discussed in media, politics, and the public. The death of Michael Brown due to a fatal shooting by a law enforcement officer inflamed the idea that police officers should wear body cameras (Griggs, Brandon). The opposing sides of such controversial questions both provide a strong reasonable argument that supports each side. However, despite the critiques against body cameras, I believe the evidence that supports the use of body cameras to be overwhelmingly positive and the intention is of pure deeds.
Is it true that excessive force is one of the most used forms of police misconduct? Are unarmed African Americans more likely to get killed during an encounter with police officers than any other race? Yes, both of these shockingly horrifying facts are true. So why are police officers abusing their powers and creating fearful environments when they should be making people feel safe in their communities. Who can we turn to on this earth to keep us safe if everyone and thing seems to be corrupt? When did police brutality become a thing in the U.S.? What exactly are we dealing with and what can we, as a nation, be doing to solve this awful conflict evolving quickly in the U.S.
In America, police brutality affects and victimizes people of color mentally and socially. Social injustice has become a major issue, which involved the principle of white supremacy vs minorities. The current police brutality that has been occurring is culturally disconnecting ethnicities from one another. According to Cincinnati Police Chief Jeffrey Blackwell, “…the cultural disconnect is very real; you have the weight of generations of abuse on African Americans,” (Flatow, 2016). For example, over the past four years, there have been countless acts of police brutality. The three key deaths of Eric Garner, Philando Castile, and Alton Sterling have become the face of police brutality in the year 2016. People knew that it was unequal treatment of black people by police in the United States and they made it known by creating #BlackLivesMatter.
Police brutality among all races needs to stop. Movements like Black Lives Matter focus in on only one race; however police brutality happens among all ethnic groups. Police brutality can sometimes shut out people who are not of the African American race. If more people supported the all lives matter movement, this could truly bring the discussion of police brutality to the table. It can be more difficult to do this when we focus on just one community of individuals. The only way to fix the downside that we face is requiring all police officers in the United States to wear body cameras. This solution would create less he said she said and more facts in situations where people are killed by police officers no matter what color they are.
Everyday law enforcement personal have the possibility to face dangerous events in their daily duties. In performing such duties a police officer could come by a seemingly ordinary task, and in a blink of an eye the event can turn threatening and possible deadly. When or if this happens to an officer they won’t have
For example, according to Dara lind “Officer’s aren’t supposed to shoot to kill. They’re supposed to do whatever is necessary to disable the threat”(Lind). Whenever an officer gets caught up in a difficult situation where deadly force is needed for the most part officers do shoot to kill because they feel like there life is in danger themselves. Yes like they said they are supposed to do whatever is necessary so therefore if shooting to kill someone is necessary to them then for police officers it is the right thing to do. But in reality in some occasions deadly force by a cop resulting in someone’s death is not needed and there should be other alternatives to handle difficult problems like that. In addition, “Usually, the point from where the officer believes he has to use deadly force to the point where he uses deadly force -- where he pulls
The United States criminal justice system constantly violates human rights. These rights belong to justify every person in America and should not be used to tear one another down for what their beliefs are. Likewise, freedom of speech is so ingrained in the constitution that it should be more widely embraced. The protection of religion, speech, and expression is a critical part of America’s political system. The strong, direct link between freedom and democracy is unbreakable and is an important part in governing ourselves. It states that Congress is prohibited in creating laws against people’s belief’s; yet, it is regularly denied to anyone who talks back to the law. Furthermore, this country supports the death penalty. While some individuals
Attention Getter: Are all the officers who are intended to "Protect and Serve" really following through with that?
We must take actions to reform police behavior! The problem is not the police nor the people of the United States, but the Federal Government system in which we all have to abide by. In order for a police reform to be implemented, the system has to be fixed and reconstructed. The people of the United States want to feel protected by the police, but on the other hand, they receive limited training on how to effectively interact with the people in the community they serve. Police officers are ordained by the power of the government. Police reform should start by giving proper training to new recruits and veterans, enforcing community policing and police accountability.
What happens when officers forget their role and responsibilities? They abuse their power and go beyond their duties crossing lines that should not be crossed for instance in Saratoga New York a police officer tries to conduct and illegal vehicle search, when the civilian refuses, the officer slaps him and takes the keys. This type of conduct should not be tolerated and officers should constantly be reminded of the consequences of such actions. One thing in particular that can be observed is that in most videos the officers are not alone yet the other officers knowing their partner are wrong do not intervene, this pattern shows that the officers are not being trained properly. Proper training can easily avoid such conflicts for example in the case of Saratoga New York another officer could have deescalated the situation by letting his partner know that what he is doing is illegal, this simple action could had avoided a lot of problems. The majority of police officers do an excellent job but is the few that do not do a good job the ones ruining the image and reputation of the force, reminding officers of their duties and paying attention to their actions can make a difference in job performance while helping keep good community
New technology can help solve many problems that are associated with the police and civilians. On the civilian side, many say that police sometimes use excessive force, “violence in excess of what is typically permitted according to training protocols and the law” (Ross). New technology like body cams can help hold officers accountable for their actions. On the law enforcement side, there is the complaint that they are not protected well enough. New technology like the smart belt, a belt outfitted with advanced sensory technology that communicates directly with the command staff at the police station, will help keep them safe and back them up in
I have respect for the police, and the job they do. Policemen are a selected few who do a dangerous job. Police have done many great things to help improve communities, help people during their off duty hours and stand strong in face of many fears. The police trying to enforce the law are on the streets in all types of weather. Instead of being at home with their families on holidays they are working to keep peace. Everyday, they step out in a world where violence is considered appropriate.
