Just imagine a 17 year old girl sitting on her bathroom floor. She is staring at this plastic stick that is now going to determine her choices for the rest of her life. The little plus sign causes her stomach to tense up and her throat to choke up. Who will help her? Who will pay for the food her and her baby need? Who is the father? Will she finish high-school and go to college? How will her parents react? This young girl has a choice that will have major impact on her life no matter what she decides. What if she was able to decide when and how she wanted these decisions/questions to come up? That young girl isn’t the only girl thinking about this choice; actually thousands of girls are. The United States has the highest teenage …show more content…
President- elect, Donald Trump, and Vice President- elect, Mike Pence, have stated their views on Planned Parenthood and how it should be defunded; especially Vice President elect, Mike Pence, who has a history of trying to defund Planned Parenthood. In 2007, Mike Pence introduced a bill to defund Planned Parenthood, and kept pushing for it until it passed in 2011. "If Planned Parenthood wants to be involved in providing counseling services and HIV testing, they ought not be in the business of providing abortions," Pence told Sarah Kliff in 2011. "As long as they aspire to do that, I’ll be after them." So after this troubling statements and bills, I decided to set the record straight. Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit reproductive health care organization. It’s services provide STD testing, pregnancy prevention, contraception, counseling, cancer and HIV tests, and abortions. Planned Parenthood is a well rounded health care organization for men and women. They use their resources to help you not the other way around. Planned Parenthood is a program designed to help all human beings. Planned Parenthood shouldn’t be defunded; instead it should be keep being available to all human beings visiting or living in the …show more content…
Planned Parenthood services are about 80 percent of their clients receive health services to prevent unintended pregnancy. Along with that, according to Planned Parenthood official website, 42% of their services prevent and deal with STDs/ STIs and 34% in contraception education and resources. Another 20% of the services are to provide pap tests to screen for cervical cancer and breast exams to detect breast cancer, and education to young people and adults through programs and outreach. Although Planned Parenthood health services do include the option for abortion only 3% of their overall amount of services are abortion
There is a common misconception that Planned Parenthood is a center for abortions, and that is it. The truth is, only three percent of Planned Parenthood’s services relate to abortions. Planned Parenthood receives $500 million in federal funding and it is illegal to spend any of that money on abortion services. In CNN ’s article, "Planned Parenthood, by the Numbers”, there are clear statistics about how Planned Parenthood manages the money they receive and how a majority of their work focuses on
There have been several individuals including patients and former staff that have come forth and shared their experiences at various Planned Parenthood clinics around the country.
(Fram, August 2015)”. Having said that their perspective on defunding Planned Parenthood is to cut the tax dollars by all means of supporting this organization. Their view is that a human life begins at conception and that abortion is killing another human being so they support the government to prohibit partial birth abortions.
First, most adolescents are not mature enough to make decisions that will change their lives forever. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius state, “Some older adolescents have the cognitive ability and capacity to reason similarly to an adult. However, neuroimaging studies have shown that the brain undergoes major reorganization during adolescence, particularly in the regions of the brain relating to executive functions” (qtd. in Christian Med.). In other words, the majority of teens lack maturity and wisdom to make life changing decisions (Christian Med.). In most situations, teens are desperate, and they make choices without thinking about the long- term consequences of their actions. If abortion is hard, enough in a grown woman imaging how it must be in a teenager with no one by her side to counsel and guide her. Imaging how confusing would be the mind of a fourteen years old girl going through an abortion without having her parents to tell her that everything will be fine. How can a fourteen years old girl handle that much stress?
Planned Parenthood federation of America (PPFA), is widely known as Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood is a non-profit organization that provides reproductive healthcare and family planning services. Planned Parenthood is the nation 's leading sexual and reproductive health care provider and advocate (Planned). Planned Parenthood receives federal funding from the government to help practice the services they provide, but some groups believe that funding this organization is morally wrong. Specifically, in the recent Republican Presidential debates, defunding Planned Parenthood and Abortion rights have been the central topic. However if the government were to move forward with the defunding
Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit organization that receives federal as well as state government funding. As per Lori Robertson’s article on factcheck.org, she states that “Planned parenthood’s 2008-2009 annual report states that it received $363.2 million in” Government grants”(Lori Robertson) As per government representative Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah and a member of the Republican Party he believes that the grants that the federal government have been providing PPFA have been mainly used on abortion service and not on health services. While being “In a senate floor speech on Aug.3, Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, who cosponsored a failed bill to fund Planned Parenthood, also said that “abortion account for 94 percent of Planned parenthood’s pregnancy services”” (D’Angelo Gore). The organization also have antiabortion groups who also wants the funding to be cut. One of the allegation that Monica Miller a rally organizer made against PPFA is that “ The kind of sexual ethic that Planned Parenthood promotes is sex for recreation, sec for mere pleasure”(Monica Miller). Meanwhile, we also have the religious groups that beli...
Some individuals supported the defunding, expressing that other medical facilities are just as qualified as Planned Parenthood to provide inexpensive health care to those with low income ("No Funding for Planned Parenthood – No Problem”). Furthermore, supporters of defunding believe that one of the services provided by Planned Parenthood are morally wrong, such as abortion, and illegal, such as the selling of fetus body parts (“House Votes to defund Planned Parenthood”). On the other hand, many individuals opposed the defunding by claiming that the government expenditures are beneficial and that without Planned Parenthood the less fortunate, or many other women, would be unable to receive quality health care ("The Economic Case for Planned
Abortion has been a controversial topic in the U.S ever since it became legal in 1973 after the Roe v. Wade case. Abortion is defined as the, “the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy.” Pro-life supporters believe that abortion is unethical and argue that it is the mother’s responsibility to own up to her actions. They also argue that there is always the option of adoption, and that abortion could be very dangerous. I am pro-life and believe that the government doesn’t have the right to decide what a woman can or can’t do with her body.
Since 1916, Planned Parenthood has provided affordable reproductive healthcare and has worked to better educate both men and women about their sexual wellbeing. Planned Parenthood allows people, regardless of gender or sexuality, to have a protected space to associate with individuals like them. A segment of our population argues that Planned Parenthood goes against their religious beliefs or claims that their tax dollars go to an organization that they don’t support- however, Planned Parenthood is a necessary program that supplies expert health care and information to people worldwide.
Secondly, Jeb Bush (governor of Florida) made a statement “I'm not sure we need half a billion dollars for women’s health issues” Hillary Clinton and other democrats were outraged by this, but other people started wondering and asking questions about how much money they really make, and what planned parenthood does with it and if defunding it would actually save taxpayers money. Planned parenthood revives $500 million a year just in government funding, but to be more technical $528 million according to planned parenthood last annual report. But that totals a little over 40 percent of their total $1.3 billion for last year, which hints that they're in a bit of financial trouble. Undercover videos were taken of what planned parenthood does with their money, these videos reveal that planned parenthood actually sells fetal tissue. So in order for them to do this, the government has to target low income Americans in order to keep funding planned parenthood. Wasting more people's
Planned Parenthood has been targeted by conservative due to controversy over abortion. I am pro-choice. I believe that it is the woman’s choice and only her choice whether or not she carry’s out a pregnancy or not. I personally would not be able to get one myself, but that is why it would be my choice. Pro-choice is not pro-abortion. It simply supports that your body is your body and no one should tell you what you can or can’t do to it. America was built on the base idea that church and state should be separate, but a lot of conservative reasoning for their pro-life arguments tends to be linked to religious reasons. I consider myself to be a very religious person, but I understand that my religion should not have a seat at the table when discussing governmental matters. Planned Parenthood gave women, who otherwise would not have been able to afford it, reliable healthcare. Not to mention that majority of patients from Planned Parenthood are minorities and lower class citizens. The people who are against federal funded health care facilities seem to only be upper class groups who either have great insurance or are so rich it doesn’t even matter. Planned Parenthood services includes cancer screenings, STD checks, and other general healthcare options. Abortions make up an extremely small percent of Planned Parenthood’s services, and the small percent that goes to abortions is not under federal aid. The argument that tax payers were paying for women to get abortions was/is completely
Over half of these centers are in areas of the country that are medically underserved and have the largest positive impact on minority communities or communities that are significantly distanced from main stream health care providers. In these instances, Planned Parenthood often serves as the communities’ only primary health care option providing treatment of acute and chronic disease, minor office procedures and health assessments, evaluations for referrals to specialists and authorization for hospital care. Patients living in remote rural areas can talk with Planned Parenthood providers through online services or through real time video technology. These innovations in using technology for providing healthcare have helped achieve a forty year low in teen pregnancy. Defunding Planned Parenthood will result in limiting or eliminating health care access to people in this country especially those in low income, predominantly minority areas or rural areas that are significantly geographically removed from main stream health care
In America, one million teenagers get pregnant every year (National Abortion Federation, 2003). Of these pregnancies, 78% are unplanned because these teenagers start having sex at a very young age and are unaware of ways to prevent pregnancies. Thirty five percent of the pregnant teenagers chose to abort, as they fear that the consequences of the pregnancy might cause significant effects to their lives. The problems that come with teenage pregnancies include dropping out of school, receiving inadequate prenatal care, developing health problems, relying on public assistance to raise a child, and probably divorcing their partners. In most states, the law allows pregnant teenagers to take their babies for adoption without consulting their parents. The same laws allow the teenagers to have an abortion but require parental notification or consent before carrying out the procedure. These laws prove biased as they favor one resolution over the other, as they force some to bear babies they do not want by restricting their options.
45 million Americans live in poverty and rely on government subsidies to get by. Medicaid is a governmental health care program that offers care to those in poverty. Right now over 60% of all patients use Medicaid to cover their procedures received at a Planned Parenthood facility. These include preventive measures such as breast and ovarian cancer screening, HIV testing and contraception methods. The facilities do provide abortions, but it is only a small portion of all the other procedures performed and they are all safe and legal upheld by the Supreme Court Case, Roe v Wade. Many people oppose the services offered by institutions such as Planned Parenthood, but it is an important facility that should not be defunded further because it provides
Women should have the right to decide whether or not they would like to have an abortion. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines abortion as; “the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus.” The idea of a woman’s right to have an abortion being taken away is merely incomprehensible.
