Pets are a center piece of a young adult’s life. They may have owned the pet from a young age or are bearing the responsibility for the first time now that they are away from home. Taking on the responsibility of owning a pet can be just as time consuming as parenthood. Whatever the case may be careful consideration must be taken of all aspects of owning larger animals such as dogs. You must consider your roommates if you have any and make sure they are okay with have an animal having free range of the house or apartment. Most importantly, one must consider the rules of the property they reside in and must be sure they can cover all the financial costs associated with fines and pet care. Another important factor, although not many people can
College students, burdened by school work and having to attend long lectures, have very little free time on their hands. Unfortunately, it’s the price someone has to pay in order to get ahead in life. Some, if not all, students have to work to support themselves financially. With all this in mind it should be easy to come to the conclusion that getting a puppy is not a viable option when attending college. Some people, including my roommate, do not always think it through. When you get a puppy it is one of the closest things you will get to having a baby. Puppy’s need to be potty trained; having a carpet should automatically disqualify getting a puppy as a possible option. Like children, they need constant attention and will act out if the attention is not given. Puppy’s need to be fed, hydrated, taken on walks and watched because they can and will chew through anything they can get their mouth around. Lastly, and arguably most important, one must consider the burden the puppy places on your roommates when you are in class or working. Puppies do not like to be left alone even for a minute. They will whine, bark and claw at the doors of your sleeping roommates until someone decides to give it some company. Of course, this may not be the case for all animals and dogs alike but I am speaking from experience dealing with my roommate’s
Small pets like reptiles, hamsters and fish are low maintenance, cheap and just as rewarding. They do not need the extra care and attention that a dog needs. As a reptile enthusiast, I encourage people to try and own not so popular types of animals. Many people dislike smaller delicate animals because of the fact that they cannot be handled the same way you can handle a dog. Yes it’s true you cannot play fetch with a lizard, hamster or fish but the time and money you save based on convenience is infinitely better than to stress over a dog. Certain reptiles, if trained properly, like iguanas, bearded dragons and Chinese water dragons will allow themselves to be handled so long as it is not in an aggressive manner. The options and alternatives to dogs are endless and can be just as rewarding without all the hassle. In college, money and time is valuable, you cannot afford to miss class assignments and even work because of your
“Puppy-mill kennels can consist of anything from small cages made of wood or wire mesh to tractor- trailer cabs to simple tethers attached to trees” (“Dogs”). “Dogs are often kept in cages with wire flooring that injures their paws and legs”(“ASPCA”). This information can lead one to believe that the dogs do not get proper exercise or play with toys. Like humans, dogs need exercise. It is wise to take house dogs on walks throughout the day.
To show, from A Closer Look At Puppy Mills, “To maximize profits, female dogs are bred at every opportunity with little to no recovery time between litters. When they are physically depleted to the point that they no longer can reproduce, breeding females are often killed” (ASPCA 4). According to, Caesar Milian and Melissa Peltier, animal experts, “lifespan of the breeding dogs is often cut in half.” To add on, the animals are in pens and cages that are not large enough for them. ( What is a Puppy Mill? 6). In the mills the puppies are overcrowded in small spaces. Puppies need the room to exercise and have to room to be comfortable. Moreover, “ In some cases, their matting and confinement are so extreme that their fur actually grows into the cage, pinning the dog in one spot.” Dogs can’t live just sitting in one spot. They do not have room to lie down, exercise, eat, etc. If the dogs even try to move, they can pull their fur out or cause pain. As well, the puppies are removed from their mothers when they are only about 7 weeks old. Then, ten or more puppies are crammed in a small cage to be transported causing the puppies to be scared and have many illnesses or conditions caused by neglect and stress (Puppy Mills, Pet Shops, and the AKC Basic Facts 6). When the puppies are 7 weeks old, they should be with their mother and their littermates. The puppies are still learning at 7 weeks old and they miss out. When they go home with their owners they could end up being nippy or not socializing
Finally, the child that has the service dog has to take care of it. However, certain things like moving desks to provide room for the dog or providing a place for the dog to use, should be given. The school cannot require things such as access to shot papers, a court's recognition, or so on. They can request it but they cannot require
People of different ages, young and old, will love having a dog or a pup around. They even treat them as their best friend. Nevertheless, you must also think of the possible consequences that come with owning one. Effective Dog Training is necessary for your dog and you should understand you have to make an effort to socialize your dog. You have to expose your dog to the outside world, so that it will not intimidate other people.
The reason why I feel like it’s the right decision to make is because not all people like animals. Normally, people who don’t like animals don’t like to be around them, I know I like animals but I don’t like dogs jumping on me, and I sure don’t like having dog hair all on me and some other people may feel the same way as I do. Second, I don’t think that dogs should be allowed in the workplace because any little thing could go wrong, some dogs may not be used to being around a lot of people and which that can cause a problem or maybe can cause them to get violent or agitated around being around
Having a dog can be a great experience for people who enjoy their company. These animals are usually friendly and active; they are intelligent and can develop a strong relationship with their owners based on love and care. However, having dogs is a big responsibility for the person who owns them, because they are animals, so they cannot support themselves. Dogs need someone who can feed them, give them love, and someone who can help them exercise. Moreover, these animals need big spaces in order to run and develop their muscles, so the owner has to know that he needs to take a walk with the dog several times a day.
It's that time to choose. You need to make your choice fast. You don't want to be that person in the store everyone is calling weird because you can't just pick what kind of pet you want. Dog or cat? Cat or dog? Oh what's the difference! That's when it hits you, you realize there is a difference, a big difference! Why, there is so many different things about these two pets you didn't think of before. Which one will you choose; a dog that you can go take jogs with, or a cat you can cuddle can watch movies with?
Animals on a college campus can pose many problems, however most of those issues can be solved with a little time and effort from those that feel strongly about the issue. Some people say “having a pet is not fair to the other people that are in the building because they may be allergic to dogs or are afraid of them.” An easy way to fix this issue would be to have couple dorm buildings that are specifically pet friendly. Colleges all over the world are starting to welcome pets in their dorm rooms and have created living spaces for students who want to bring their pets. These schools argue that allowing students to take their dog or cat to college allows them to take a little piece of home with them which makes the transition much easier. Schools could also invest in dog parks outside and pet friendly areas that students can take their pets to use the bathroom, similar to the way apartment complexes are set up. This would eliminate any problems that people have with allergies, being scared, or simply just not wanting to deal with dogs in their dorm building. Also, for those that want to live in the pet friendly dorm buildings there should be an extra fee for having a pet which would pay for extra maintenance in those dorm buildings and the pet friendly areas
As one gets older being responsible comes in handy when applying to jobs, when attending school, and when having kids. Owing a dog teaches you to be responsible. For kids its one of their first jobs they get. They are told to pick up poop, take the dog out for walks, feed the dog and play with the dog. They are taking care of another life and if they do not do those tasks then the dog does not live a happy life. It gives kids a longtime commitment and it teaches them how to be consistent. They no longer just think of themselves they start thinking of the dog’s needs and what’s best for their dog. For adults who are thinking of having kids in the future whether it’s being married or single a dog is a good wake up call as to how hard it is taking care of another life yet so rewarding. Taking care of oneself is one thing but being responsible for another life is a life changing experience. Dogs are not cheep they are expensive. Dogs need a lot of things for
The high demands that are placed on pet owners when a dog is selected sometimes wreak havoc soon after it is introduced into the family. Dogs are high maintenance with an above average degree of time requirements that usually become a hindrance to pet owners in the early phase of ownership. The cat does not present these problems, which is part of the low maintenance advantage many pet owners seek. Dogs can have separation anxiety, use the bathroom in the home for spite when left alone for long hours, and usually requires lots of exercise which mandates the pet owner to be available during the day to provide the appropriate amount of exercise needed by
Most homeowners normally have pets at home. You will realize that these pets normally provide companionship to their owners. Some of the common pets that are kept by most homeowners include: dogs, cats and so on. Pets are wonderful creatures. They require to be trained from time to time. Most people usually prefer keeping a dog as a pet.
Dogs are magnificent creatures, and when raised correctly, are adorable, loyal, loving animals. However it takes a lot of time, energy, and commitment to make sure that dogs are raised correctly. These animals have a lot of the same requirements that a human child needs. They also act as a child would. A new dog owner would do well to consider these points before they take on the responsibility of raising one of these incredible creatures.
Owning a Pet Having a pet is a wonderful idea! Pets bring companionship, personality, and gut wrenching humor to households across the world. Having previously owned both a cat and a dog, and currently being without a pet, I began to think about getting a new furry friend. Born a dog lover, and bred into a cat lover, I had the difficult decision of choosing one of the two. When I was twenty-two years old, I answered an advertisement in the paper for free Labrador puppies.
When you’re choosing which pet to get, think about your situation at home and how much free time you have during the day. In today’s household, 36% of them have dogs and 30% of them have cats (U.S. Pet Ownership Statistics). This statistic shows that cats and dogs are the most popular pets and it can be tough to decide which one to get. People that aren’t home a lot shouldn’t get a dog because a dog needs to be played with everyday to keep it health and happy. A cat would be the better choice for someone that is busy a lot because cats wonder and do their own thing, but they will always come back to their home. If you have small kids at home, four or younger, consider getting a cat. Cats are a lot calmer and would be safer around young kids. A dog has a lot of energy and even though they are just trying to play, they could hurt a young kid many different ways. Another thing you need to think about is the size of the animal that you want. All cats are about the same size and there all lap animals. Dogs come in all different sizes; some are small like cats but others are very big. Even though there are small do...
There are many reasons to get a pet. You could choose to get a pet for a companion, or simply to add to your family. Many older folk choose to get a pet after they retire or lose their spouse so they do not feel lonely. Many young couples choose to get a pet before they opt to have children, and many families add a pet to their home for their children. The question is though, what type of pet to get? Do you get a cat, or a dog? Having a dog as a pet over a cat is much more enjoyable and beneficial to your life, specifically because of their behavior, convenience, and loyalty.
