Marijuana, also known as pot, weed, and bud that has the botanical name of Cannabis sativa. This naturally grown substance that contains THC affects how the brain works and gives the user a high. This feeling of a high can help relieve different pains and even help users forget about bad memories. Marijuana is a naturally grown plant, so the question is why can it not be used legally? Making the use of marijuana legal can be a benefit due to the fact that it is safer to use than alcohol and tobacco, which are legal and sold in every gas station and grocery store throughout our country, it will help with the nation’s economic problems, will be used to help people who have medical problems, and it will help stop the number of people who are arrested for possession of marijuana. According to expert sources, marijuana has been found to be less dangerous than both alcohol and tobacco products. “Marijuana is safer than many over the counter drugs,” according to Francis L. Young (Young, Francis L. 2). Young, from the Drug Enforcement Agency, stated that marijuana is one of the safest therapeutically active drugs and substances that is known to man today. Only a small number of marijuana users have smoked enough of it to suffer the same impairments that match extreme tobacco use. According to the British Medical Journal, a single glass of wine impairs driving more than just one joint of marijuana does (British Medical Journal 4). Medical research found that marijuana’s medical harms are equal to those of tobacco when it is used in the same amount, which rarely is the case. “In strict medical terms, marijuana is far safer than many foods we commonly use. Marijuana is a natural plant and was never meant or created to harm people in anyway. The government and the opposers against legalizing marijuana need to recognize that there are far worse things out there than a drug that cannot even kill you. There may be legitimate reasons for marijuana to not be legalized, but there are just as many or even more reasons for it to be legalized. Marijuana should be legalized because it is less harmful than two of the most harmful products on the market, alcohol and tobacco, it can bring in revenue and profit for our country. It can help with many medical conditions, and it can reduce the amount of arrests in the country.
