Captains Letter 2017-2018
Just Keep Swimming Swim team is all about doing your best and achieving your teams goals while also reaching your own goals. Being a captain isn’t about being the best in the pool its about setting the example and supporting your teammates. The captain is responsible for doing their best to do everything they can for the team and pushing everyone to achieve their goals. Their job is to be there for any teammate that is struggling physically or mentally. I want my teammates to feel supported and if they ever need help that I am there to help them though whatever comes up. As a captain I may not be the strongest swimmer out in the pool but I always try my hardest and do my best in every race. As much as I may not like an event I will still do it, there is no question about it, it will be done to the best of my ability. Holding myself to do things I don’t want to do will encourage other swimmers, my teammates, to step outside of their comfort zones and try a new event, maybe step into one where we need an extra person. I know I would step into an event I’m not comfortable in to help the team. If a new swimmer sees a captain doing an event they aren’t the best at but are
Every swimmer on the team needs to know that they will be supported when they aren’t in the pool at practice or at a meet. As I mentioned before I know that I am not the best, and I will never be the best. My goal is always to do my best and if a new swimmer gets a slower time than what they expected they need to know that they did their best and there is always room for improvement. When I found out that I was one of the captains of the Varsity Sideline team, I had a beaming smile and felt satisfied with my achievement. As captain, cheerleaders on the varsity and the JV squads come to me with questions and small issues, and I enjoy the opportunity to help them. I have become even more organized and mature because the coach looks to me for help. I have been swimming year-round on a club team since the age of six and when I was younger improving came relatively easily. However, around age 13, I hit a training plateau despite having the same work ethic and focus that I had previously had. I grew to despise swimming and at points I wanted to quit. However, unlike Junior, I had role models and mentors who were positive influences on me and who helped me to overcome this challenge. Primarily, I had several of my best friends on the team who convinced me to keep persevering and to not simply quit the sport that I loved so much just because I was no longer dropping time. For example, every day I watch my close friends Lizanne and Cate come to practice and give it their all, regardless of the numerous injuries and medical issues that plagued their swimming career; their positive outlook and dedication motivated me to try even harder than I had before. Moreover, I had by parents, something that Junior did not have; my parents were always there to support me after yet another disappointing meet reminding me that “you get five minutes for a win and five minutes for a lost”. My parents where my voice of reason as I tried to work through my issues; they were always there to encourage me, but also were very honest with me
I know having 2 captains is not a necessity but it works better for me because I like to work in groups. In science class I like doing labs with a partner because you get to bounce your ideas off of someone. If there is someone in my group not doing the their job I take it upon myself to fix the problem and take charge.
The three most important qualities that a team captain should have are positivity, patience, and the ability to maintain composer in difficult or high stress situations. It is important to be a positive person and enjoy the job because the team captain is the role model for the other employees. If the team captain is not positive how can it be expected from other employees. They certainly are a struggle, but I don’t want to be judged by all of these things. Although they are a part of me, they don’t define me. In sixth grade I took an interest into diving, and have been on the dive team since that very year. I am hoping to be captain my senior year, but if not, I won’t let it bring me down. I love the sport because it incorporates my flexibility and control.
The captain has the potential to effect more results than the assistant coach and/or even the head coach. Captains leave effects on others on every level and interact with everyone; they have the capability of influencing the coach and teaching other players. Captains must ensure that they never step out of line and must keep his or her team in order. They have to have his or her mind on the sport constantly, and always be aware of what they are doing. Captains will always have a lot on their shoulders and coaches should look for more in a captain than just athletic ability. They should also look for commitment, confidence, and intelligence to ensure they choose the best person to lead their team to the championship.
If I got granted this amazing opportunity, I would be thrilled. I have time to focus on colorguard and would always be willing to improve the team. I am ready to focus and lead these girls to do amazing things this year. However, I do understand that they are many other girls applying for this spot and that I may not get this. All I want is for the West Central colorguard to do great things in 2014 with or without me as captain.

A lot of Olympians that are part of the summer Olympics are very athletic, they swim all year around. The swimming Olympic history and background is very interesting. They have done so many new things over that past couple of years. They come out with new rules every year to make things more fair and challenging. There are a lot of events and tons of records that have been broke. A lot of Olympians have set future goals to stride for. I was swimming the 200 meter fly I was at a really good time when I had 50 meter sprint left at the end all I could think about was I’m going to set the new world record. Olympic swimming is a very fun sport it is very athletic. Every year in the summer time every one always sits around a TV watching this it is very famous in America. Swimmers from all around the world come and here and compete. There is a lot of competition there I have found out a lot about the history of swimming.
