The internet provides an opportunity unlike any our ancestors ever experienced. We are able to connect – instantly – with people of all ages, genders, and races, all across the globe. Social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram allow users to send images and text posts to their friends or to the public, that is, anyone on the internet who happens upon their post or cares to run a simple search for it or for the user. This provides many incredible opportunities for artists to share and get feedback on their creations, and to make money. People who are not artists can converse with others from all over the world and potentially develop a deeper understanding of other cultures and therefore a greater tolerance of people unlike them. …show more content…
Examples could include repeatedly emailing or texting someone threats, posting deprecating comments on their artwork or on a post they have made, or insulting someone on a chat forum. It happens frequently, to varying degrees. A person may email someone a threat once then never contact them again, or an aggressor may pick one specific victim and harass them multiple times a day for weeks, months, or even years. Parry Aftab, an expert on Cyberlaw, estimates that a minimum of 40% of high school students have been cyberbullied, with nearly 80% of middle school student being cyberbullied (Cyberbullying Growing More Malicious). There are several theories regarding why internet aggression is becoming such a problem. Dr. Oren Amitay, a psychologist, points out that so called “mob rules” apply online – that when several people start doing something, others are likely to join in. ((reyersonian)) This can help explain why after one user begins harassing another user, more are quick to join the attack. It does not, however, explain why that initial attack happened. Amitay has a possible explanation for that as well. “The sense of having anonymity or operating undercover does make people do things they wouldn’t ordinarily do,” he says. ((Reyersonian)) This theory of a safe haven of anonymity is the most commonly held belief regarding internet aggression - the offender need not fear a physical attack and often cannot or will not be traced or blamed in any way, and so may act
--------------Hook-------------The problem is that cyberbullying is an act that must be stopped, but putting limits on students ' online speech is unnecessary. If you are not familiar with the word Cyberbullying, it is a is when an individual is tormented, threatened, harassed, humiliated, embarrassed or otherwise targeted by another individual using the Internet, interactive and digital technologies. But yet again I bring the point that schools should not limit the amount of students online speech. Schools must protect students’ First Amendment rights but also maintain the learning environment and safety at school. Three main reasons why school should not limit students online speech are there is not a large percent affected, it does not cause
It is also when individuals use technology to spread rumor about another person to defame or humiliate them. Cyber harassment came about with the increase technological advancements and also the birth of social media has contributed to it as well. In the online article, Students Warn Peers about Cyber Bullying by Dawn Turner Trice. Trice writes about a 17 year old high school student by the name of Tiffany Witkowski who quit Facebook after getting cyberbullied. Tiffany tells Ms. Trice that, "They would go to my boyfriend 's page, and the next day at school, people would say, 'Oh, you and your boyfriend saw whatever movie or did whatever, I never felt physically threatened. But I felt emotionally threatened. I had just recently moved from Arizona. I had a family tragedy, and I said, 'Why is this happening to me? ' I needed emotional stability, so I just got rid of Facebook." Social media sites like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook are useful for getting in touch with lost friends and family, but, it still has it negatives such as Cyber bullying, sexual predators, and so many other
Phoebe Prince is a name some of us might not know or remember, but in 2010 her name and picture were everywhere. Phoebe Prince was an Irish immigrant who moved to South Hadley, Massachusetts. In her new high school she was the subject of malicious bullying by her classmates, both at school and online. This bullying would eventually drive Phoebe to hang herself. Bullying in schools and online has become a serious problem in our country. . According to cyberbullyinghotline.com, 20 percent of those cyberbullied think about committing suicide, while 1 in 10 victims attempt it. With rates like this, the question left to be answered is, when is bullying “just kids being kids “,
“About one third of all teenagers who use the internet say they have been targets of a range of annoying and potentially menacing online activities – such as receiving threatening messages; having their private emails or text messages forwarded without consent; having an embarrassing picture posted without permission; or having rumors about them spread online” (Amanda Lenhart). Cyberbullying is bullying that occurs using electronics such as cell phones, computers, and social media websites. Cyberbullying can include mean text messages, embarrassing pictures of others on social media, or fake profiles. The internet continues to be the most democratic of mass media. Anyone can use the internet and create a website
Every day Tod wakes up for school and starts his day from there. When he goes to school everybody knows that he is a bully and a troublemaker. All the time he only gets problems all of the time. He does not bully because he has to, he bullies because he wants to. Tods situation is not uncommon around the world. In fact over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year. Approximately 160,000 teens skip school every day because of bullying. 17% of American students report being bullied 2 to 3 times a month or more within a school semester. This issue is a hotly debated subject. Some argue that bullies should be punished while others argue that they should be given therapy or help. Despite what some may say, bullies should be helped
As a society, we often underestimate the damages that bullying cause on children, not just America but all over, and the ones who suffer are the victims themselves. Victims are damaged with the stigma that they are weak, yet somehow have to fend for themselves against something that they have little to no control over. Whether it is for funding, a reputation or any other reason schools sweep their bullying problem under the rug or turn a blind eye, however they have more potential to end this growing issue. To the schools that think bullying is not their problem, they should know that according to heyugly.org, an anti-bullying campaign, “Approximately, 160,000 children a day stay home from school in fear of being bullied.”They also point out
For high school students bullying and harassment can make a time of learning and new social interactions a nightmare. The possibility of being physically or verbally bullied at school,, a place where student should feel safe, is a growing peril. Unfortunately, bullying is nothing new in the United States. As well as the problem of avoiding being a victim of bullying at school, students can not escape this harsh scrutiny because of the rise of social media networks. Teenagers are being harassed on social media at alarming rates and a majority of school can do nothing about it. To understand the role social media has in the battle to prevent harassment and cyberbullying, it is essential that people identify the roles schools and students play in these situations.
What is Cyber bullying? Cyber bullying is just like regular bullying but instead of bullying face to face, it’s done on the internet. In America, cyber bullying has gotten out of hand during the past year. Unfortunately kids who are bullied through the internet have a difficult time getting away from the bullying. Children today walk the street while thinking or knowing they will get picked on. This has also caused teens to commit suicide. Usually teens that are the bullies have a lower self-esteem than the person they’re bulling. Teens today use the internet more than anything excluding sleep. In two thousand and eight young teens ages 12-17 had access to the internet. Cyber bullying needs to stop before more of our children hurt themselves. Studies show that most likely a female would be the most bullied. A high percent of teens have been angry, frustrated, sad, embarrassed, scared and shockingly a small percent weren't even bothered.
Social media is quickly evolving in front of our eyes, and it is almost impossible to reject and hide from this new form of media. Not only is it an important part of socialization within peer groups, but now it is used to market and motivate people to become a part of a larger community. It is undeniably changing the way one communicates and how one finds and shares information. Most websites offer communication through the use of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn and many other blog formats. With new apps on smartphones and photography and video made digital, media can be created, edited and shared quickly and once it is in this new digital cloud it is not yours anymore.
Bullying against teens is still happening even though there are various awareness programs to try to prevent it. I want to create awareness of bullying against teens of all religions, race, and sexual orientation. Even with the various attention to bullying, the problem still persists despite the school providing awareness, students are still afraid to say anything. Societal patterns today make bullying a difficult issue to eliminate. Starting in 2007, a total of 35 states made laws to go against bullying at school. These laws consisted of a clear definition of bullying, and how schools will be required to enforce uniform standards of conduct. The reason bullying comes as such an issue to me is because I actually know friends that have been suicidal and have caused themselves harm due to being bullied every day, in school and at home.
Problems usually have solutions. Solutions could be extremely easy to find, or the process of finding one could be problematic. One worldly issue that does not have a solution yet is bullying. Bullying is present in schools world-wide, and it has been this way since there have been schools. This horrible act is accepted as part of life. People are used to bullying, that it almost seems normal. This should not be the case. Bullying is a horrific act that needs to be stopped, but is that possible? Three specific ways people have proposed to stop bullying is to criminalize bully in an attempt to deter any further bullying, to assign bullies student mentors in order to have someone guide them, or to force school or parental figures to be more active in trying to prevent bullying. Each of these methods has its advantages and disadvantages, but which is the best method to effectively stop bullying?
Public opinion is often emotional rather than rational, so it is extremely easy to be incited and would possibly cause cyber bullying, which means to attack one person or a small group of persons by using offensive language. The damage caused by cyber bullying to a person is not virtual but real. An article from PR Newswire called “Cyber Hunting and Cyber Bullying” tells a st...
The online bully’s goal is to make their target feel weak; these online bullies can be referred to as a cyber bully. Cyber bullying is the exercise of using technology to embarrass, threaten, harass, or target another person; according to its definition it occurs among young people (New, 4). It is usually performed by a child’s peers and surprisingly occurs early as the second grade (Jacobs 1). Cyber bullying can even be unintentional, especially through the use of emails, IMs, and text messages because the tone of the sender may be hard to depict. However, recurring emails, online posts, and texts are hardly ever unintentional (124). As the number of youths increase that have the availability to technology, cyber bullying is likely to continue to rise and continue to take its toll on youth. Due to its excessive effect that it has on children today, Cyber bullying should be taken more seriously.
Social media can be used in our days as a very helpful tool for many things in changing any person’s life ant attitude. It has a positive impact on the society level. These media will keep the person socially active and open to all what happened in the world. Sharing the latest news, photos, finding new friends and knowing the culture. Also, it allows for millions to keep in touch with each other and update for all the new technology. And, it helps people who have difficulties in communication with others to be more socialized and stronger and develop more confidence to feel more comfortable, protected and relaxed just sitting behind a screen. “It saved me time and money without ever requiring me to leave the house; it salvaged my social life, allowed me to conduct interviews as a reporter and kept a lifeline open to my far-flung extended family” says Leonard(231).
Bullying has become a serious problem in public schools systems. Being a victim of bullying is a daily struggle for some students. The issue continues to grow, but the question is how to stop bullying from occurring. Many ways have been attempted to stop bullying, but some are more effective than others. Having the students get involved seems to have the most positive effect on the bullying issue in public school systems.
