“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,” says the Statue of Liberty, an iconic symbol of freedom. Is this country living up to its words? Immigration has been a constant topic of debate in the U.S. Some want to limit the flow of immigrants, be they legal or illegal. Others want to open our country’s doors to any immigrants. Still others want illegal immigration to halt completely. But those people don’t see that illegal immigrants are actually benefiting the economy. And that the immigrants benefit us more than we benefit them. These immigrants, no matter if they are legal or illegal, should be able to come start a new life in this prosperous land.
Illegal immigrants are viewed as a burden by many, but not many see how they benefit us. Many farms employ illegal immigrants, and depend on them to make profit. The United States Department of Agriculture stated, “about half of the hired workers employed in U.S. crop agriculture were unauthorized, with the overwhelming majority of these workers coming from Mexico”. It also stated that, “any potential immigration reform could have significant impacts on the U.S. fruit and vegetable industry.” These unauthorized workers are part of the backbone holding the agricultural economy up. For example, 75 percent of janitors are native born, 65 percent of construction laborers are native, and maids and housekeepers are 55 percent American born.
