School Meals
Over the past 3 years, I have encountered many new experiences, one of which is the food served on campus. Many parents are not aware of the type of food they serve on campus. This is a very important issue we need to solve to improve the health of all the kids and teens in schools. They claim that the food they serve is a good balanced meal, is really just a poor attempt to meet the requirements for a good healthy meal. There has been a very high increase in obesity, and its mostly targeting the younger population. This has been going on for quite some time now, and no one has made an effort to solve it. It is so easy for anyone to find a fast food place now and days. They are basically everywhere and its so convenient to get.Teens and kids are the ones who eat this the most, because some of the parents are always in a hurry and find it easy to get it. When they go to school it supposed to be a place where they learn and get a good healthy meal, but the school lunch system is basically the same as a fast food place. I have personally ate this food and there so many stuff wrong that is just crazy. One of the things that I have notice is how they try to make an effort into making the food they serve more healthy, but is is just insulting. They think that by adding fruit to the main meal is going to make it a healthy meal. The fruit is all bland, colorless, and with no flavor whatsoever. Its is hard and its just a poor attempt to try to convince us that they are trying to make it better. Now the actual main food like for example a chicken patty, It looks like they made it all in a hurry. All the do is get two buns and slap a reheated patty with noting in it, just the buns and the patty and thats our meal. This is no way to feed us, we need to have a better lunch than something that was just made in less than a
Janet Poppendieck is a professor of sociology at Hunter College in New York, and additionally she is the author of several books including her most recent Free for All: Fixing School Food in America. This book centers on America’s recent interest in whether or not our school lunches are healthy. This issue has been put into the spotlight recently through shows such as Jamie Oliver’s School Food Revolution and in the news because recent changes in the Nation School Lunch Program’s dietary guidelines. Poppendieck’s book looks at the in depth reasons into why school lunches have turned into what they are today, what challenges need to be faced in order to fix school lunches, and ultimately how our the system should be fixed. She accomplishes this by interviewing her current college students about their previous school lunch experiences, working in a school cafeteria, interviewing current school employees, and looking at the history and policies of the National School Lunch Program.
The obesity problem in this country has gotten worse, a lot worse, and the surge in obesity can be tied directly to fast food. I was appalled by the fact that since 1980 the number of people either fat of obese has doubled, and in that time frame there are twice as many overweight children and three times as many overweight adolescents. Looking strictly at the numbers, it is very easy to find a direct correlation between the number of overweight or obese individuals and the number of fast food establishments. However these fast food outlets are not created in a vacuum, they are servicing a demand. Each day one in four Americans visits a fast food restaurant. Our culture has evolved to one of immediate gratification, we want it convenient, and we want it now. The fast food industry has simply seized that cultural demand and has taken advantage of it all the way to the bank. I think we have a cultural weakness that looks for someone to blame for our problems and McDonalds certainly makes a nice target.
I don't think our school lunch is healthy because it has fat and too much sodium. Although it is good it is fattening it is the reason for much of the obesity in the U.S. Many kids have no other option to eat the unhealthy school lunches or they will be hungry.
In other words, the food is not delicious and there are not many choices. Also, when children don’t get proper nutrition, they have trouble focusing on school. Most students do not buy lunch because they feel it is unappealing and do not like the food served. Many students go to other kids and ask for food. In addition, many students do not eat breakfast, so they rely on lunch to fuel them for the day.
In “Don’t Blame the Eater,” David Zinzcenko illustrates a very valid argument. His conflict seems to be with the food industry and its horrible variety of products. The results have been staggering to the public’s health, especially teenagers. Fast food restaurants are Zinzcenko’s primary target for causing this epidemic. Zinzcenko stated, “lunch and dinner, for me, was a daily choice between McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried Chicken or Pizza Hut. Then as now, these were the only available options for an American kid to get an affordable meal” (pg.241). This statement is very true and has been for a while. Fast food is very convenient, especially for teenagers. People are reaching obesity at a very early age and remain that way throughout their lives.
Lunch is one of the most important meals of the day and is consumed mostly in school cafeterias for children and adolescence. Wholesome lunches are vital in maintaining a healthy metabolism and give children energy for the rest of the school day. We should have off campus lunch because none of the other students want to waste any school money on their ID. The subject chose I will be discussing is off campus lunch. The issue chose is relevant because other students will have to eat the same thing everyday. The purpose or reason why I chose to discuss this topic is because the students don't want to have the same food everyday. I am credible speaker because of how this affects me. This issue affects me because I don’t want to have the same food every day, and there is a mall next to our school and we could get our favorite food there and we could just walk there. No other students does not want to eat school lunch because they want fast food soda or juice and they can walk with their friends and they can hang out with their friends.

To conclude, unhealthy foods in the cafeteria and the vending machines are the worst examples for the kids to maintain the healthy eating habits. Us Parents have to step in to make changes for our kids because in doing so would determine what kind of foods our kids are consuming. We do know for facts they are not getting the proper nutrients while in school, although they do spend in average of eight to 12 hours in schools. We, the parents, can start to make a difference, by attending the school meetings and being active in our kids functions in schools.
It has been a growing problem for a long time now and society has the power to change it. People need to change it because it is unacceptable. No matter how cheap or how good fast food may be, people need to learn how to work together. There are many things that could be done to fix this and the new generation needs to take action. America has been working on fighting obesity for decades now. People need to learn how to stop blaming each other for the mistakes society made. Personal responsibility is the key to fix the problem it would be very easy if everyone did their part. It’s unfortunate to say that as time goes and problems are given resolutions, school lunches are left in the same frozen state. School lunches should should not only be fulfilling but also a nutritious and healthy meal. This is not the case however and what is left is nothing more than a low nutritious meal, that is served to students everyday. First of all, students aren’t motivated to eat unhealthy, not-tasty food. When a person walks into a restaurant the first thing that catches the eye on the menu may be the Chefs special, the cheapest option, the big and juicy deluxe combo, or the deal of the day.
